    Description: This report describes the proximate compositions (protein, moisture, fat, and ash) and major fatty acid profiles for raw and cooked samples of 40 southeastern finfish species. All samples (fillets) were cooked by a standard procedure in laminated plastic bags to an internal temperature of 70'C (lS8'F). Both summarized compositional data, with means and ranges for each species, and individual sample data including harvest dates and average lengths and weights are presented. When compared with raw samples, cooked samples exhibited an increase in protein contentwith an accompanying decrease in moisture content. Fat content either remained approximately the same or increased due to moisture loss during cooking. Our results are discussed in reference to compositional data previouslypublished by others on some of the same species. Although additional data are needed to adequately describe the seasonal and geographic variations in the chemical compositions of many of these fish species, the results presented here should be useful to nutritionists, seafood marketers, and consumers.(PDF file contains 28 pages.)

    Notes: A correlational procedure was developed to predict the vapor liquid equilibrium behavior of light hydrocarbons in heavier hydrocarbon solvents at low temperatures and elevated pressures. The method is applicable to paraffinic as well as aromatic solvents.The method employed the Benedict-Webb-Rubin equation of state to predict the vapor phase fugacities. Methane liquid fugacities in the various hydrocarbon solvents were based upon Henry's law which included terms to account for compositional and pressure effects. The liquid fugacities for ethane and propane were calculated using infinite dilution data to modify empirically the Scatchard-Hildebrand equation. Excellent agreement between the correlated and low-temperature data available on this class of systems was obtained.

    Notes: Since operation error is a major factor contributing to industrial disaster, it is necessary to develop safety interlock systems which prevent modes of operation that are known to be dangerous. It is not possible to foresee all the disruptions that might occur and, for this reason, an a priori analysis of safety problems is incomplete. At each step in operation the state of the process must be updated if hazardous conditions are to be avoided. To a large extent this is a problem in logic which can be handled rapidly by the computer using the methods developed here.

    Notes: Kamyr digester chip level poses a difficult control problem, because the chip column dynamics are complex and it is difficult to measure the chip-liquor interface. Control of the chip level is required to smooth digester operation and to stabilize the residence time. Conventional methods rely largely on fixed parameter controllers which are unable to compensate for changes in the process dynamics. Manual controller returning is often required.An adaptive chip level controller based on Generalized Predictive Control (GPC) is presented. Closed-loop time series identification methods were used to develop the process model and to design the controller. A significant reduction in chip level and P-number variability has been observed since commissioning the controller on an industrial digester in September 1988. The adaptive controller has eliminated the need for manual returning, reduced the need for operator intervention, and demonstrated the potential to predict hang-ups.

    Notes: A Model is developed to predict the coalescence behavior in liquid-liquid dispersions. Coalescence times are based on the lifetimes of the single films that are formed between adjoining drops in a creamed or sedimented dispersion. The model is developed for smaller drop sized dispersions (〈100 μm) in which the drops are not substantially deformed due to gravitational forces. The model predicts that coalescence occurs between the emulsion drops without the gross separation of the dispersed phase (that is, the dispersion does not separate into distinct oil and water phases). As a result of interdrop coalescence, the mean drop size of the dispersed phase increases along with an increase in the polydispersity of the drop size. The model's predictions are used to develop a quantitative relationship between the lifetime of the single film and the rate of increase of the mean drop size of the dispersion. The model also accounts for the effect on dispersion stability via the models of single film drainage in the presence of surfactant.

    Notes: Elliptical basis function (EBF) networks are introduced as a new nonparametric method of estimating probability density functions for process data. Unlike Parzen window density estimators that use identical hyperspherical basis functions, the EBF method uses elliptical basis functions adapted to the local character of the data. This technique overcomes the spikiness problem associated with Parzen windows, where in high dimension, they can fail to produce smooth probability density estimates. The EBF estimator produces valid density functions that converage to the underlying distribution of the data in the limit of an infinite number of training examples. A technique based on statistical cross validation is introduced for evaluating different density estimators. The criterion is a measure of how well the density estimator estimates the density of data not used in the training. The EBF density estimation method and the evaluation technique are demonstrated using several examples of fault diagnosis.

    Notes: Knowledge of local heating rates is needed for estimation of operating temperatures, thermal stresses, and cooling requirements in nuclear reactor components. Heat is liberated by the dissipation of the energy of fission fragments, beta particles, fast neutrons, and gamma photons. Heating rates are formulated in terms of either neutron or gamma flux densities, the corresponding collision probabilities, and appropriate energy transfer coefficients, the forms of which are given. Special methods of estimating the flux densities are discussed. The data on the magnitudes of the various energy sources are reviewed.
