Notes: A study has been made of the uptake of a commercial polyaminoamide resin (Hercosett-57) by wool fibers. The effect of various chemical pretreatments on the uptake of the resin was monitored in order to investigate the mechanism of bonding of the polymer with the wool. From the results obtained it would appear that the deposition of the resin is not controlled by simple chemical reaction with the fiber. Surface treatments to the wool fibers and adhesion play a more important part in the resin-bonding process. Insoluble chlorinating agents such as DCCA and Chloramine T proved more effective in bringing about resin deposition than did the more widely used acid chlorination treatments, which use free chlorine in solution.

Notes: Native cellulose has been shown to consist of a crystalline array of parallel chains, based on the X-ray diffraction data for specimens from the sea alga Valonia ventricosa. The unit cell is monoclinic with dimensions a = 16.34 Å, b = 15.72 Å, c = 10.38 Å (fiber axis), and β = 97.0°. The space group is P21 and the cell contains disaccharide segments of eight chains. Models containing chains with the same sense (parallel) or alternating sense (antiparallel) were refined against the intensity data using rigidbody least squares procedures. The results show a preference for a parallel chain structure with specific chain polarity with respect to the c axis. The refinement places the —CH2OH side chains approximately 20′ from the so-called tg conformation, with a result that an 02′—H…06 intramolecular bond is formed. The structure also contains an 03—H…05′ intramolecular bond and an 06—H…03 intermolecular bond along the a axis. All these bonds lie in the 020 planes, and the structure is an array of hydrogen-bonded sheets. A major consequence of this work is that regular chain folding can be ruled out and cellulose is seen as extended chain polymer single crystals.

Notes: The structure of β-chitin has been refined by rigid-body least-squares methods, based on the intensity data for highly crystalline specimens from the pogonophore Oligobrachia ivanovi. The structure consists of an array of poly-N-acetyl-D-glucosamine chains all having the same sense, which are linked together in sheets by N—H … O=C hydrogen bonding of the amide groups. In addition to the O-3′—H … O-5 intramolecular hydrogen bond, analogous to that in cellulose, the CH2OH side chain forms an intrasheet hydrogen bond to the carbonyl oxygen on the next chain. This structure shows considerably better agreement between observed and calculated intensities than that possessing an intersheet hydrogen bond, as had been proposed previously. The structure is consistent with the swelling properties of β-chitin and can also be seen to be analogous to that of native cellulose.

Notes: Small- and intermediate-angle (0.006 〈 Q 〈 0.25 Å) neutron scattering experiments have been performed on polyethylene terephthalate (PET). Amorphous and semicrystalline samples with deuterated PET molecular weights of 24,200 and 40,500 were prepared. The average value of RGW/MW1/2 determined in the small-angle region for the amorphous samples is 0.406, in close agreement with the experimental θ-solvent (0.398-0.420) and theoretical (0.394) values for unperturbed dimensions. The intermediate-angle results for the amorphous sample are consistent with the random coil prediction to Q = 0.08 Å, but beyond this Q value there is some deviation from Gaussian behavior. The semicrystalline samples show a decrease in the radius of gyration as measured in the small-angle region and an increase in intensity (when compared to the amorphous data) in the intermediate-angle region, especially for the low-molecular-weight material. These results suggest that crystallization in PET is accompanied by greater molecular reorganization than has previously been observed in most bulk polymers.
