Notes: Batch and continuous fermentations with Clostridium thermoaceticum (ATCC 39073) using automatic pH control were conducted. The value of μmax obtained from batch fermentation was about 0.14 h-1; acetate yield, which was both growth and non-growth associated, was about 2 mole of acetic acid/mole of glucose, compared with a theoretical maximum value of 3. This low yield, compared with literature data, may be explained by glucose loss through a combination of degradation routes. Continuous fermentation could be sustained for 1600 h or more without contamination problems. Continuous fermentation at high dilution rates indicates that μmax may be well above 0.17 h-1 when fresh feed medium is used. Acetate yields in continuous fermentation were about 77% of theoretical or 2.3 mole of acetic acid/mole of glucose.

Notes: The strong ultraviolet absorption in the wave-length region 280-330 mμ shown by copolymers of acenaphthylene with styrene or methyl methacrylate is due to acenaphthylene residues. The spectra of samples of copolymer containing a small percentage of acenaphthylene are different from the spectrum of polyacenaphthylene. As a result of the comparison of the spectra of these copolymers with the spectra of acenaphthene and with the two forms of 1,1′-biacenaphthyl it is concluded that spectra of the copolymers can be explained as arising from the presence of pairs of acenaphthylene groups. Finally it is shown that the spectra can be used to estimate the acenaphthylene contents of the copolymers.

Notes: A linear high polymer composed of repeating α-methylene glutaric anhydride units has resulted from the controlled cyclopolymerization of acrylic anhydride. Proof for the linear nature of this polymer is based upon solubility and thermoplastic behavior. Proof for the cyclic nature of the polymer is based upon the lack of residual unsaturation. The molecular weight of linear polyacrylic anhydride has been altered by the use of chemical modifying agents in the polymerization recipe. Linear polyacrylic anhydride undergoes characteristic carboxylic anhydride reactions.

Notes: The attempted synthesis of diacrylylmethane by the acylation of methyl vinyl ketone with ethyl acrylate produced exclusively the homopolymer of diacrylylmethane. This new polymer is linear and is composed of recurring methylene dihydroresorcinol units. An anionic mechanism is proposed for the cyclopolymerization of diacrylylmethane. Polydiacrylylmethane undergoes chemical reactions which are characteristic of beta diketones and proof for structure of the polymer is based on solubility, fusibility, infrared absorption, ultraviolet absorption, and enol titration data.

Notes: The following indole compounds have been unequivocally identified and semi-quantitated in culture supernatants of Rhizobium strains by gas chromatography mass spectrometry: indole-3-aldehyde, trytophol, indole-3-carboxylic acid, indole-3-glycollc acid, indole-3-actic acid, indole-3-glyoxylic acid, N-acethyl-L-tryptophan and indole-3-pyruvic acid, as well as indole-3-acetic acid. The strains included a number of chosen Rhizobium mutants defective in various stages of nodule formation, and the biological implications of the findings are discussed. Two alternative approaches to sample purification were taken, one based primarily on solvent partitioning and the other on high-performance liquid chromatography. The advantages of each method are discussed. Gas chromatographic retention times and mass spectra are given for the TMS derivatives of 17 authentic indole standards.

Notes: Mass and NMR spectral data are presented for a number of dodecafluoro-1,6-disubstituted triptycenes. The epoxide OAs2(C6F4)2 can be made by heating together arsenic (As), arsenic(III) oxide (As2O3) and 1,2-di-iodotetrafluorobenzene (1,2-I2C6F4) in a sealed tube. The molecular structure of As2(C6F4)3 has been confirmed by X-ray crystallography.

Notes: The thermal degradations of 1-(N-ethylanilino)-3-phenoxypropan-2-ol in an inert atmosphere, in air, and over alumina were studied with the aim of investigating the thermal stability of the cure linkage in aromatic amine-cured bisphenol A-based epoxide resins. Degradation products were characterized. Possible degradation mechanisms are outlined and are related to the results of previous studies of the thermal degradation of these resins.

Notes: The thermal degradations in an inert atmosphere, in air, and over alumina of 1,3-diphenoxypropan-2-ol and 1,3-diphenoxypropene were studied with the aim of investigating the thermal stability of the glyceryl portion of bisphenol A-based epoxide resins. Degradation products were characterized. The thermal stability of the glyceryl group relative to that of the cure linkage in aromatic amine-cured epoxide resins is discussed.
