Notes: An analytical study of the interaction of mixing, radiation attenuation, and chemical kinetics in isothermal photoreactors is presented. For a particular chain reaction mechanism in the presence of stationary state kinetics and low conversion, the conditions required for the existence of mixing effects are formally stated, and the direction of change of conversion and quantum yield resulting from the introduction of mixing is established. Calculated results are presented for monoenergetic, unidirectional sources. Factors considered include mode of chain termination, radiation attenuation law, photoreactor geometry, state of mixing, and reactor optical thickness. Chemical and mixing time scale considerations are discussed.

Notes: A continuous pump in which the feed and product streams flow steadily both in upflow and downflow is experimentally investigated in the model system toluene-n-heptane on silica gel adsorbent. The experimental data compare reasonably well with analytical results based on an equilibrium theory. The operating conditions necessary to achieve high separation factors are shown to be dependent on the relative magnitudes of penetration distances and the height of the column.

Notes: A semicontinuous parametric pump with batch operation during one half-cycle and continuous operation in the other half-cycle was experimentally investigated using the model system toluene-n-heptane on silica gel adsorbent. A mathematical model based on an equilibrium theory is presented and is found to be in good agreement with the experimental results. Furthermore, it is shown that when the penetration distance for the cold cycle is less than or equal to that of the hot cycle and the height of the column, the rate of production of pure solvent by this pump may become quite large compared to the rate of production by a pump in which operation is continuous during both half-cycles.

Notes: Chromatography experiments and pressure-composition isotherm measurements were carried out on the vanadium-hydrogen system in order to obtain an understanding of the equilibrium and kinetic factors affecting hydrogen isotope exchange. Analysis of the results yielded values of the hydrogen equilibrium distribution coefficient, the tritium-protium separation factor, the rate of the gas-solid exchange reaction, and the axial dispersion coefficient.

Notes: Trajectories of bubbles and entrained particles in the rotating fluidized bed were obtained from equations expressing a balance among inertial, centrifugal, Coriolis, gravity and drag forces. The solutions led to information on the behavior of isolated bubbles, bubbles swarms and the elutriation characteristics of the rotating fluidized bed.

Notes: Experiments on the separation of hydrogen isotopes were conducted using vanadium hydride in a temperature swing process. Process behavior followed trends predicted by an equilibrium theory of process operation, but was modified by a kinetic isotope effect and by finite rates of hydrogen absorption and isotope exchange.

Notes: The separation of mixtures of helium and methane using a single column of activated carbon in a pressure swing adsorption process was studied experimentally. Process performace was predicted with an average error of 10% or less by a local-equilibrium well-stirred cell model in which dead volumes at the feed and product ends of the column were accounted for. Systematic differences between experiment and model were ascribed to omission from the model of flow resistance and heat release.

Notes: Isothermal, isobaric measurements were made of the rate of hydrogen absorption by a slurry of LaNi5 powder suspended in n-undecane in a baffled stirred reactor. The data were interpreted using a model emobodying three resistances in series: a gas-liquid mass transfer resistance, a liquid-solid mass transfer resistance, and an “overall reaction resistance.”At the highest agitator speeds employed, 2,000 rpm, conversions of LaNi5 to hydride of 90% or better were obtained within one minute or less, thereby confirming the potential of the metal hydride slurry concept for commercial applications.
