Description: Azaspiracids (AZA) are polyether marine toxins that accumulate in various shellfish species and have been associated with severe gastrointestinal human intoxications since 1995. This toxin class has since been reported from several countries, including Morocco and much of western Europe. A regulatory limit of 160 μg AZA/kg wholeshellfish flesh was established by the EU in order to protect human health; however, in some cases, AZA concentrations far exceed the action level. Herein we discuss recent advances on the chemistry of various AZA analogs, review the ecology of AZAs, including the putative progenitor algal species, collectively interpret the in vitro and in vivo data on the toxicology of AZAs relating to human health issues, and outline the European legislature associated with AZAs.

Notes: The microorganism Candida utilis was grown on both filtered and unfiltered substrate obtained from enzymatic hydrolysis of starch in corn dust. For growth on filtered substrate, the average integrated biomass energetic yield value based on biomass-substrate data was η = 0.55 and for growth on unfiltered substrate an average yield value of η = 0.59 was obtained. Material and energy balances showed that the presence of unfiltered corn residue in the media had no significant effect on the yields. Statistical methods were developed and used to obtain best estimates of the growth parameters. Values of the biomass energetic yield corrected for maintenance (ηmax = 0.619) and the maintenance coefficient (me = 0.043) were obtained for growth on filtered substrate. Values of ηmax = 0.741 and me = 0.142 were obtained for the growth on unfiltered substrate. The consistency of data and parameter estimates was relatively good for filtered substrate; however, parameter estimates for unfiltered substrate were not consistent. Growth experiments without filtration of the products of starch hydrolysis resulted in protein-enriched products with about 39.73% protein.

Notes: This work is concerned with statistical methods to estimate yield and maintenance parameters associated with microbial growth. For a given dilution rate, an experimenter typically measures substrate concentration, oxygen utilization rate, the rate of carbon dioxide evolution, and biomass concentration. These correlated response variables each contain information about the maintenance and yield parameters of interest. A maximum likelihood estimator which combines this correlated information for the yield and maintenance parameters is proposed, evaluated, and tested on literature data. Both point and interval estimators are considered.

Notes: Electrocatalyzed Cyanomethylation of Azomethines: A New Synthesis for β-AminonitrilesCertain Schiff-bases (2-7) react in acetonitrile (1) at a Hg-cathode in a new electrocatalyzed cyanomethylation method in good yields without side-products to β-aminonitriles (2a-7a). The synthesis is initiated by an electrochemical deprotonation of 1 by azomethine-radical anions in catalytical amount to acetonitril anions (B-). During nucleophilic reaction of B- with 2-7 up to its complete consumption, the cyanomethylation synthon B- is regenerated in a cyclic, self-reproducing process. Quantum chemical calculation in context with cyanomethylation product analysis permit mechanistical insights and exact prediction of suitable azomethines and coupling position for B-.

Notes: Synthesis of Cyanosubstituted Di- and Tetrahydropyridines in DIMCARB (Dimethylamine-CO2-Adduct)A new selective method for base-catalyzed ring closure reaction of acetophenones (1a-I) with malononitrile in DIMCARB (dimethylamine-CO2-addition-compound) as solvent of high dimethylamine concentration is reported, which allows effective syntheses of (1.2-dihydro-4-pyrid-6-yl)dicyanomethanides and 5-cyano-6-dicyanomehylene-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridines in good yields. The structure of the two new classes of compounds is proved by X-ray diffraction analysis.

Description / Table of Contents: Short-time-tests in a new test-chamber for corrosionAt first the author discusses the problems of short time tests and refers to the faults of sprayers operated by spray nozzles. Then he describes the „Aerosol apparatus“ which allows to produce a fine homogenous fog. This device was the basis for the development of a new test chamber for corrosion. Finally the advantages of this device are emphasized and some applied experiments and their results described.

Notes: A process for preparing metiallic cobalt particles of uniform size in the 10-1000 A. range is described. Dicobalt octacarbonyl is thermally decomposed in solutions of dispersant polymers to form stable colloids of discrete particles which are separated by polymer coatings. Variatin of polymer composition, molecular weight, and solvent used results in a variation of particle size and colloid stability. Preparation of single-domain ferromagnetic cobalt particles with good magnetic properties depends on a very delicate balance between dispersant polymer, solvent, and the growing metal particle. A number of addition and condensation polymers can act as dispersants. The most successful are linear addition polymers of high molecular weight having relatively nonpolar backbones. Ideally, groups with a polarity greater than the backbone are attached at intervals of at least 100 but not more than 200 backbone atoms. The need for more polar groups and their spacing becomes les critical with increasing polymer molecular weight. The polymers appear to stabilize the metal particles by adsorption to form a thick fiml which separates the particles sufficiently to keep van der Walls energy of attraction below thermal energy levels. The solvent must solubilize the polymer coating sufficiently to allow the particle to grow. It should be less polar than the most polar group in the polymer and be chemically inert.
