Description / Table of Contents: Pteridines, LIX. Synthesis of 7-Amino-, 7-Hydroxy- and 7-Methoxylumazine 5-Oxides and a new Pteridine → Purine Transformation7-Hydroxy- (5,7) and 7-methoxy-6-methyllumazines (6,8) can be converted to the corresponding 5-oxides 12-15 by H2O2 oxidation. Refluxing in acetic anhydride lead to deoxygenation of the 7-methoxylumazine 5-oxides (13,15) whereas the corresponding 7-hydroxy derivatives (12, 14) react under ring contraction to 1,3-disubstituted uric acids (25, 26). A possible reaction mechanism of this pteridine → purine transformation will be discussed on the basis of isotope experiments.

Notes: Human parotid salivary glycoproteins separated by gradient sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) and electroblotted onto nitrocellulose have been investigated using a battery of biotinylated lectin probes of characterized sugar specificity. Lectin binding, detected on blots using avidin-biotin complex (ABC) and a chemiluminescence generating substrate, was recorded on photographic film and compared with the original fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC) stained blots or with Coomassie Brilliant Blue R-250-stained gels run in parallel. A number of glycoprotein bands which were undetected by protein stains or the periodic acid Schiff reaction were revealed by lectins. Binding by lectins from Concanavalia ensiformis, Lens culinaris, Limax flavus, Phaseolus vulgaris, Ricinus communis, Triticum vulgaris, Lotus tetragonobulus and Ulex europaeus indicated that sialylated and fucosylated triantennary and bisected, N-linked complex sugar chains were present on many glycoproteins in addition to the major glycosylated proline-rich glycoprotein (GI). Binding with lectins from Arachis hypogaea and Dolichos biflorus indicated that the O-linked sugar chains were confined to the α-heavy chain of Ig A. Comparison of lectin binding in samples from five healthy individuals revealed differences in a number of flycoproteins in addition to the previously characterized GI and CON 1/CON 2 polymorphisms and demonstrated that the H blood group antigen was expressed mainly on GI in parotid saliva. This study will be used as a basis upon which to study salivary glycoproteins in diseases affecting parotid glands.

Notes: The yield stress is a simple function of the deformation ratio in the direction of testing for specimens oriented by uniaxial or biaxial stretching or rolling. Unless the yield stress increases more rapidly than in proportion to the deformation ratio, there will be instability during tensile creep under high loads. The relative merit of various polymers differs for creep and stress relaxation. Fatigue and bend recovery are also related to the molecular structure.

Notes: The overall non-isothermal crystallization kinetics for nucleated and non-nucleated isotactic polypropylene (iPP) in dotriacontane systems was investigated. Adipic acid was used as the nucleating agent. Crystallization peak temperature was determined via differential scanning calorimetry as a function of the experimentally controlled variables iPP concentration, cooling rate, and nucleating agent concentration. The influence of these variables on crystallization mechanism and spherulitic structure as implied by the Ozawa and Ziabicki analyses was determined. The non-isothermal crystallization kinetics presented here are the first for iPP-diluent systems with and without nucleating agent.

Notes: Non-isothermal crystallization growth rates of nucleated and non-nucleated isotactic polypropylene (iPP) in dotriacontane were determined experimentally by thermal optical microscopy. Adipic acid was used as the nucleating agent. The non-isothermal growth rates of the nucleated and non-nucleated systems were compared with experimentally determined isothermal growth rates. The Lauritzen and Hoffman growth rate equation, originally developed for isothermal crystallization, was modified to describe the non-isothermal growth. The modified Lauritzen-Hoffman equation was used to predict isothermal growth rates from non-isothermal crystallization for the nucleated and non-nucleated polymer-diluent mixtures. This study is the first to deal with polymer-diluent-nucleating agent systems vital to membrane production.

Adipic acid was used as the nucleating agent. Half-time was determined via differential scanning calorimetry as a function of the experimentally controlled variables dilution, crystallization temperature, and the addition of nucleating agent. The influence of these variables on fold surface energy was examined by the Lauritzen and Hoffman analysis.
