Open and Bridged Intermediates, 1. Evaluation of the Steric Interaction in Open and Bridged Norbornane DerivativesThe regioselectivity of the bromolactonization of the 1-alkyl-5,6-exo,cis-dibromo-2,3-endo,cis-norbornanedicarboxylates (6) increases with the bigness of the bridgehead substituent R1. If R1 = CH3 the bromine at C-6 is 2 times and if R1 = C2H5 it is 5 times faster substituted than the bromine at C-5. In contrast, the acid catalyzed ring opening of the 5,6-exo-epoxy-1-methyl-2,3-endo,cis-norbornanedicarboxylic anhydride (12a) leads to the formation of the hydroxylactones 13a and 14a with equal rates. An ethyl substituent at C-1 shifts the ration of the isomers 13d and 14d to the value of 3. - The different steric repulsion of the alkyl groups and the bromine atom or the epoxide oxygen shows the different steric interaction in open and bridged intermediates.
Notes:
