Description / Table of Contents:
Crystal Structure of Lanthanum Amide, La(NH2)3Single crystals of La(NH2)3 were obtained by ammonothermal synthesis during six days with KNH2 as a mineralizer. The atomic ratio used was K:La = 1:80; the NH3 pressure was 4000 atm, and the reaction temperature was 350°C.The compound crystallizes monoclinic in the space group P21/c with the spacings: a = 6.794 Å, b = 11.55 Å, c = 10.41 Å, and β = 106.5°. The lattice contains eight formula units. All of the La and N atoms occupy the general position of the space group. The structure of Lanthanum amide shows a layer like distribution of cations parallel to (100), whereas no pure layer structure is formed. Eight amide ions surround each La3+. The two La positions within the asymmetric unit have corresponding to their anionpolyhedra different numbers of common faces, and both share one common edge. In spite of the low symmetry of the arrangement of the atoms their close packing is remarkable.
Notes:
Gitterkonstanten: a = 6,794 Å, b = 11,55 Å, c = 10,41 Å und β = 106,5°.
