Notes: The generalized relationships of Lee and Kesler for the thermodynamic properties of nonpolar fluids have been combined with an accurate equation of state for water which is utilized as the reference substance for polar fluids for reduced temperatures from 0.4 to 2.5 and reduced pressures to 10. The input data required are the critical temperature, critical pressure, acentric factor, and a polarity factor Y obtained from experimental pressure-volume-temperature data. Comparisons between calculated and experimental thermodynamic properties indicate that highly accurate results are obtained by the method of this study for most polar fluids. A modified procedure is presented for the compressibility factors of substances with large acentric factors such as alcohols. Tabulated values of the polar fluid correction terms are presented for the compressibility factor, fugacity coefficient, and enthalpy, entropy, and heat capacity departures for the complete range investigated.

Notes: The surface composition and energy of carbon fiber has been carefully analyzed and quantified. Untreated, AU, surface-treated, AS, and heat-treated AHT fibers were all studied. AS fiber was surface-treated by an electrolytic oxidation process. AHT fiber was heat-treated at elevated high temperatures under vacuum. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS or ESCA) was used to investigate the surface elemental concentration of carbon fibers. The corresponding surface free energies of these fibers were calculated from the contact angles measured by a dynamic contact angle analyzer. Results showed a strong correlation between the surface treatment and heat-treatment history and the surface chemistry of carbon fibers. After oxidation treatment, the surface free energy was increased by adding functional group elements (oxygen and nitrogen). However, these added elements could be removed by high temperature treatment under vacuum. The diffusion of O, N, and Na was discussed. The correlation between oxygen and nitrogen concentration and carbon fiber surface free energy has been plotted. These fibers would be used to quantify the relationship between carbon fiber surface free energy and the interfacial shear strength of the fiber-polymer interface.

Notes: The configurational isomers of 2,5-dimethoxy-1,4-bis-[2-(2,4-dimethoxyphenyl)ethenyl]benzene have been investigated by ab initio (4-21G level) and MOPAC-AM1 semiempirical methods. The calculations were guided by and compared with single crystal X-ray results of the trans,trans-isomer determined at 298 K and 103 K. The barriers of rotation of the latter isomer in the free and the solid state were enumerated. A comparison with related molecules, in particular 1,4-bis[2-(3,4,5-trimethoxyphenyl)ethenyl]benzene, is made. The positioning of substituents is shown to be of importance for ring rotational movements and NMR shifts, as well as for UV /Vis spectroscopy. © 1996 by John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: The effects of composition, molecular weight, and milling temperature on homogeneity, gas permeability, selectivity of oxygen/nitrogen, and mechanical strength of the TPX/siloxane blend membranes were studied. By adjusting the blending conditions and hence controlling the homogeneity, the gas permeability of TPX membrane was significantly improved without loss of oxygen/nitrogen selectivity. The oxygen permeability of 1.57 × 10-8 cm3 (STP) cm/cm2 s cm Hg and the oxygen/nitrogen permeation ratio of 6.92 can be obtained under the condition of TPX (MX-001)/siloxane (75,000 MW) = 9/1 at 65°C milling temperature. This membrane possesses 133 kg/cm2 tensile strength and 92% elongation. The morphology of the blend membranes was studied.

Notes: Chemical and physical characteristics of sheet-molded compounds were investigated using infrared and mechanical spectroscopies. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy with photoacoustic detection facilitated surface analysis for determination of composition, depth profile, and thermal exposure effects. Dynamic mechanical spectroscopy utilized torsion, tension, and flexure modes to evaluate temperature and frequency-dependent viscoelastic properties.

Notes: Optimal temperature histories for the batch thermal polymerization of styrene are determined using Pontryagin's maximum principle. The theoretical predictions are compared with experimental measurements of conversion and molecular weight distribution. The excellent agreement suggests policy improvements in batch radical chain growth polymerizations.
