    Notes: The number fraction of drops of a given size which break up at rotor level in a rotating disc contactor has been observed during mass transfer in either direction to or from solvent or aqueous drops. Critical rotor speeds for a given drop size undergoing mass transfer can be used to find an effective interfacial tension. Using this interfacial tension value, the break-up fractions are correlated within experimental uncertainties in the same manner as for no mass transfer. Drop break-up fractions depend on column size and relevant empirical correlations of the data are presented. The results may be used to estimate the effect of mass transfer on drop size distributions in an RDC.

    Notes: Fire test methods cited in Australian regulations codes and specifications and the authorities promulgating them are reviewed. The pertinent regulations are generally drafted and administered by departments of the seven State governments, in some cases in reference to model codes developed by committees supported by the federal government to promote uniformity. The test methods, specifications and codes of practice are standardized by the Standards Association of Australia, an independent body with no statutory powers: the standards become mandatory when called up in legislation. Building materials and structures, consumer products, certain electrical components and children's nightwear are the main areas concerned with regulations that invoke fire test methods. The intent of the regulations and the test methods are discussed with particular emphasis on matters unique to Australia.

    Notes: The development of the Australian Standard AS 1530 Part 3 ‘Test for Early Fire Hazard Properties of Materials’ from the study of the fire behavior of cellulosic wall linings in simulated room fires has been outlined. Similar studies for assessing a wider range of wall linings are now reported including various plastic facings applied to hardboard. Using similar parameters for ignitability, spread of flame, heat evolved and smoke developed, the behaviors of the linings in the standard test have been compared to the behavior in corner-wall burns. Two methods of ignition were used for the burns; (a) timber cribs; and (b) impressed radiant heat with a pilot flame. The results are discussed in terms of the validity of the standard test as a multi-parameter assessment of materials in a fire hazard situation. The test has been validated for the wider range of wall lining materials.

    Notes: The Australian Standard ‘Test for Early Fire Hazard Properties of Materials’ (AS 1530 Part 3, 1976) has been studied in detail as a method of assessing the fire performance of plastics wall linings under the conditions of early fire development in a room. A particular feature of the standard test is that four parameters characterizing the reaction to fire are measured concurrently. Results from the standard test have been compared to corner-wall burns involving the same parameters as in the standard test. The suitability of these parameters and the ability of the standard test to rank the behaviour of the materials in the same order as indicated by corner-wall burns is discussed. A general relationship between ignition time and flame spread was observed and is discussed as support for the concept of concurrent measurement of different reaction-to-fire parameters under the one test procedure and condition.

    Notes: This paper describes a survey which was undertaken to ascertain those features of house design and construction which were important to the survival of house in the ‘Ash Wednesday Bushfires’ of 16 February 1983. The Otway Ranges are of Victoria was chosen and 1153 house, with varying degrees of damage, were included in the survey. Results of a preliminary analysis of data collected are given, together with observations made concerning the so-called ‘exploding house’ phenomenon, the role of wind and the part that people played in house survival. Evidence for the ways that houses were ignited (i.e. by radiation, flame contact and wind-blown embers) was also gathered. The importance of these ignition modes is discussed and examples given. Preliminary observations on the rebuilding process are also given.

    Notes: Element-selective GC detection by microwave-induced plasma atomic emission spectroscopy has been used to examine a wide variety of compounds containing metals, non-metals, and metalloids. “Recipes”, or new selective detection schemes for use with the software of the computer-controlled system, have been developed for the selective detection of boron, aluminum, gallium, titanium, vanadium, chromium, manganese, rhenium, palladium, and platinum. Figures of merit including limits of detection, linear dynamic range, and spectral selectivity over carbon have been established for most of these elements. Gas chromatography - atomic emission detection (GC-AED) has been applied to the selective detection of vanadium, nickel, and iron in metalloporphyrins present in crude oil, manganese-selective detection of methylcyclopentadienylmanganese tricarbonyl (MMT) in gasoline, and titanium-selective detection of reaction mixtures containing titanium catalysts or titanium boride molecular precursors.

    Notes: Drag reduction in two-phase cocurrent horizontal natural gas-hexane pipe flow was studied experimentally. The effects of pipe diameter, gas flow rate, liquid flow rate, and additive concentration were investigated using the Dowell APE drag reducer. In the annular-mist flow regime studied, it was found that drag reduction increased with decreasing gas rate for a given liquid rate, drag reduction decreased with increasing friction velocity and it decreased with decreasing gas-liquid ratio for a given friction velocity. Although the drag reduction decreased rapidly as the liquid-gas ratio approached zero, drag reductions as high as 34 percent were obtained. Attempts to predict two-phase drag reduction were unsuccessful as it was found to depend upon friction velocity, liquid and gas rates, liquid-gas rate ratio, pipe diameter and additive concentration.

    Notes: Mixtures of two crystalline brominated aromatic flame retardants with a surrounding polymer were studied by differential scanning calormetry, dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), wide angle X-ray scattering, and solid-state NMR spectroscopy. 1,2-Bis(tet-rabromophthalimide)ethane (I) and decabromodiphenyloxide (II) were evaluated in high impact polystyrene (HIPS). Additive I exhibits all the properties of an inert filler. The crystalline structure with respect to the pure material remains unchanged within the polymer. Concerning the HIPS matrix, a slight rise in the melt viscosity and a reduced impact strenth as compared to the base resin was observed. In contrast, additive II is miscible with the HIPS matrix and dissolves completely. This leads to an increase of the glass transition temperature of the polybutadiene phase as revealed by solid-state NMR spectroscopy and DMA. The impact resistance of the HIPS matrix is less affected by additive II than by additive I. No interactions were noted with the PS phase at températures up to the glass transition. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
