Notes: A light-extinction principle was used to measure the fall speeds of the interfaces that develop during gravity sedimentation of monodisperse, bidisperse, and tridisperse suspensions of noncolloidal particles with small particle Reynolds numbers in the semidilute total particle volume fraction range 0.0003 ≤ c0 ≤ 0.15. For monodisperse suspensions, the hindered settling velocity of the interface at the top of the suspension was found to be well represented by the correlation of Richardson and Zaki, provided that the isolated particle fall speed was chosen by linear extrapolation of the data to c0 = 0, with 90% confidence intervals on the exponent of n = 5.0 ± 0.1. For dilute monodisperse, bidisperse, and tridisperse suspensions, the hindered settling velocities of the interfaces showed agreement within experimental uncertainty with the theory of Batchelor, which predicts that the settling velocity decreases linearly with increasing particle concentration and which is based upon pairwise particle interactions.

Notes: This paper describes the experimental measurements of the time-averaged velocities of gases in a field of variable composition and temperature. The conventional theory of hot-wire anemometry is extended to include the effects of both natural and forced convection to gases having variable fluid properties. Observations of the fully developed turbulent velocity fields in the presence of moderate mass transfer rates revealed no significant effect of mass transfer on the velocity distribution.

Notes: First field free region metastable fragmentations of (η6-PhCH3)Cr(CO)3 have been examined by means of the linked scan technique. The molecular ion is shown to fragment exclusively by single and multiple CO loss. The ion [C7H8Cr(CO)2]+⋅ also fragments directly to [C7H8Cr]+⋅.

Notes: Mass spectrometric studies have been made of the [(C7H8)Cr]+ ions generated from (η6-PhCH3)Cr(CO)3 and (η6-c-C7H8)Cr(CO)3. Fragmentation behaviour and appearance potential measurements have been used to show that the ions from the two precursors do not achieve a common structure. [(C8H10)Cr]+ generated from (η6-PhEt)Cr(CO)3 and (η6-c-C7H7Me)Cr(CO)3 behave similarly. A study of the α-d3 toluene complex suggests the structure [CH3C6H4-CrH]+ is appropriate for [C7H8Cr]+ ions generated from (η6-PhMe)Cr(CO)3 and decomposing to [CrH]+.

Notes: Fully cyclized, organo soluble, phenylethynyl-terminated, ether-imide oligomers of 2-10,000 g/mol (Mn) were prepared by the reaction of 2,2′-bis[4-(3,4-dicarboxyphenoxy)phenyl]-propane dianhydride (bisphenol-A dianhydride, BPADA) with a stoichiometric excess of either para, meta, or isomeric mixtures of phenylene diamine and phenylethynylphthalic anhydride (4-PEPA) endcapper. High para-containing oligomers produced semicrystalline powders, but the all meta isomer was completely amorphous. The lower molecular weight oligomers displayed an attractive low viscosity melt and were cured to very high gel content networks at 350-380°C for 30-90 min. The cured 3000 g/mol oligomers showed a (DSC) glass transition temperature (Tg) of 267°C and produced tough, solvent-resistant films. Excellent adhesion to surface-treated titanium alloys was achieved, as judged by single-lap shear measurements. Resin infusion molding was conducted, which permitted low-void, graphite-fabric composite panels to be prepared. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci A: Polym Chem 35: 2943-2954, 1997

Notes: A method for the synthesis of well-defined poly(alkyl vinyl ether-2-ethyl-2-oxazoline) diblock copolymers with hydrolytically stable block linkages has been developed. Monofunctional poly(alkyl vinyl ether) oligomers with nearly Poisson molecular weight distributions were prepared via a living cationic polymerization method using chloroethyl vinyl ether together with HI/ZnI2 as the initiating system and lithium borohydride as the termination reagent. Using the resultant chloroethyl ether functional oligomers in combination with sodium iodide as macroinitiators, 2-ethyl-2-oxazoline was polymerized in chlorobenzene/NMP to afford diblock copolymers. A series of poly(methyl vinyl ether-2-ethyl-2-oxazoline) diblock materials were found to have polydispersities of ≈ 1.3-1.4 and are microphase separated as indicated by two Tg's in their DSC thermograms. These copolymers are presently being used as model materials to study fundamental parameters important for steric stabilization of dispersions in polar media. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: We synthesize a quantitative theory for the radius of gyration, second virial coefficient, intrinsic viscosity, and friction coefficient for polyelectroytes in dilute solution from existing treatments of electrostatic and hydrodynamic interactions within and among wormlike chains. Comparison with data for K-PSS demonstrates the importance of accounting for nonlinearities in the electrostatics and the finite diameter of the polymer backbone.

Notes: This study reports the effects of Simplex bone cement powder (BC) on the proliferation and production of bone resorbing factors in vitro by human adherent monocytes/macrophages. Adherent peripheral blood cells were isolated from seven healthy individuals and exposed to a dispersion of BC powder (1 mg/mL), phytohemagglutinin (PHA, 40 μg/mL), or medium alone at different periods of cell incubation (days 0-2, 0-7, 5-7, or 10-12). Cell proliferation was quantified by incorporation of 3H-thymidine uptake. Culture supernatants were evaluated for levels of interleukin 1-like activity (IL-1) by murine thymocyte proliferation assay, prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) by radioimmunoassay, lysosomal enzyme activity (N-acetyl-β-D-glucosaminidase and β-glucuronidase) using fluorometry, and collagen and casein degrading activity using radioactive substrates. Human adherent peripheral blood cells showed a proliferative response to PHA that coincided with cell maturation; BC did not inhibit PHA-induced cell proliferation of either adherent or nonadherent blood cells, indicating the non-toxic nature of these particles at the concentrations tested. BC stimulated increased release of the lysosomal enzyme N-acetyl-β-D-glucosaminidase; the levels of PGE2, IL-1, collagenase, and caseinase were unchanged. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Production of oligomycin has been studied in fermentations ranging from 100 ml in shaken flasks to 1000 gal in agitated and aerated tanks. The yields ranged from nothing to 3675 μ;g per ml. The main factor favouring the production of oligomycin was a medium giving good growth and supplying an abundance of slowly utilized energy. Media meeting these requirements contained yeast extract and/or molasses for growth and lard oil for energy. Glycerol, glucose or starch as the main source of carbon gave poor results. A pH close to 7 favoured oligomycin production. Considerable organic nitrogen was synthesized and excreted by the mycelium during oligomycin production.Under suitable conditions practically all of the oligomycin remained in the mycelium. Extraction of the mycelium with acetone, concentration of the extract, removal of oily material with a low-boiling hydrocarbon, decolourization and final crystallization from methanol or ethanol were the main steps in the recovery process. From pilot plant and tank fermentations about 4500 g of crystalline oligomycin have been prepared.Three oligomycins, A, B and C were found by paper chromatography in even well-crystallized oligomycin. In different lots the proportions varied from 10-75 per cent A, 4-90 per cent B and 0-36 per cent C. High yields and high percentages of A and C were obtained on the neutral, lard-oil medium. Low yields and high proportions of B were given by the glycerol, low-pH medium.
