Notes: The interaction between a vitamin B12 derivative containing a peripheral C18 alkyl chain (see 1a) and a (methyl)thiomalonate substrate bearing alkyl chains of various length at the thioester group (see 5) was investigated. A catalytic cycle was established for the methylmalonyl→succinyl rearrangement by using electrochemistry and photolysis (see Scheme 3). Increased yields of the succinate relative to the reduction product were obtained (2:3 ratio), when the reaction was run in MeOH/H2O, and when both the substrate and the catalyst had an octadecyl substituent capable of hydrophobic interactions.

Notes: The new derivatives 7a-c, of vitamin B12, with a peripheral tris(oxyethylene) chain linked to the corrin ring by an amide or ester group, are prepared, and their ligand-exchange reactions are investigated. Upon reduction of the aqua-cyano complexes 8a-c with NaBH4, cleavage of the ‘outer’ ester and amide group is observed.

Notes: Three new derivatives of vitamin B12 with a pyrrole head group attached to the corrin ring have been prepared. Ligand-exchange reactions and reduction provided reactive CoIII and CoII complexes. Their electro-chemical properties and their potential for fixation at the surface of electrodes by electropolymerization were studied.

Notes: Discrimination may occur when injecting samples onto gas chromatography capillary columns, whereby peak areas for higher boiling point compounds are smaller than they should be compared to lower boiling compounds. This problem is most important in quantitative work on solutes having a wide range of volatility. An all-glass inlet system was used. Injections were made with a 10-μl syringe onto a column without and injection point heater and with the column oven about 20°C below the boiling point of the solvent used for the solutes. Discrimination did not occur in a range of C12 to C36 n-alkanes.

Notes: A single-step coating method for the preparation of glass capillary SCOT columns is described. It is reproducible and less time-consuming than the well-known two-step coating procedures. Other methods attempted are discussed briefly. Both the flame ionization and electron capture detectors could be used in conjunction with temperature programming. The separations achieved with an “activity mixture”, phenols and phenolic acids, illustrate the resolution obtained. The columns are suitable for quantitative determinations and a comparison is made with a conventional packed column.

Notes: An improved method for obtaining optically pure (S)-(l-p-menthen-8-yl)amine (12) has led to expedient syntheses of two hypothetical biogenetic intermediates on the way to aistoteline (7), namely (S)-(N)-(l-p-menthen-8-yl)-2-(3-indolyl)ethylamine (3) and (S)-(N)-(l-p-menthen-8-yl)-2-(3-indolyl)ethylideneamine (4). The latter has been transformed into (-)-hobartine (6) in 64% yield via a stereoselective biomimetic cyclization by treatment with HCOOH. This unambiguous synthesis establishes the hitherto unknown absolute configuration of (-)-hobartin (6). Several model cyclization reactions of N-substituted α-(terpen-8-yl)imine derivatives yielding unsaturated 3azabicyclo [3.3.1]nonane compounds are described.
