Notes: A modified method of weighted residuals approach is presented that combines expansions based on limiting forms of the true solution to solve the population balance equation accurately for continuous agglomerative precipitation. A modified moment method is used that employs fractional moments and is stable for the infinite domain problem. Solutions are obtained for various values of the agglomeration parameter, and the results are fitted to Pade approximations providing simple relationships that can be used for data fitting, thus obviating further need to solve the population balance equation with a constant aggregation kernel. This method is applied to experimental data on the precipitation of nickel ammonium sulfate and calcium carbonate to yield kinetic parameters.

Notes: Details of the total synthesis of rapamycin (1) are reported. The synthesis required the preparation of intermediates 4 - 9 in nonracemic form; key coupling reactions included a chromium-mediated addition of vinyl iodide 8 to aldehyde 7 and an Evans aldol reaction to couple fragments 62 and 9. Intermediates 4 and 6 were joined through an amide bond formation to afford advanced intermediate 71. Swern oxidation of the diol in 71 was followed by a selective removal of the TES groups and a second Swern oxidation. Finally, removal of the remaining silyl protecting groups provided fully deprotected, penultimate intermediate 2 in which all carbons were in their proper oxidation state. Macrocyclization was achieved through a tandem inter/intramolecular palladium-mediated Stille coupling reaction between distannylethene 3 and bis(vinyl iodide) 2. This latter process accomplished in one step the installation of the remaining two carbons of the natural product and the completion of its total synthesis.

Notes: The influence of four different boron compounds (boron carbide, boron nitride, boron oxide and disodium tetraborate decahydrate) on the curing characteristics of carbon black- and silica-filled conventional natural rubber-, nitrile rubber-, and silicone rubber-compounds has been studied. The curing parameters have illustrated the individual action. Rheographs have been analysed through the application of CoraN's model. The kinetic parameters have revealed the effects of the boron compounds on different stages of cure. The crosslink density has been assessed from swelling for comparison with the related parameters.

Notes: A study of the autohesion of polybutadiene rubber filled with different amounts of carbon black has been made. When the elastomer is uncrosslinked, the autohesive strength initially rises linearly with square root of contact time and finally shows a time independent course. The initial autohesion at time zero increases almost linearly with increasing carbon black content, while the ultimate strength is markedly influenced only when the filler content exceeds 30%. The time necessary to achieve ultimate strength decreases significantly when small amounts of filler are added.Experiments with slightly crosslinked polybutadiene did not show a characteristic time dependence. The autohesive strength increases strongly up to 30% carbon black content and seems to decrease again on further addition of filler.

Notes: The Si LVV Auger lineshapes of the single-crystal Si(100) surface and the oxygen chemisorbed and clean TaSi2 surfaces are studied by observing the three Auger transitions that have different final states in the valence band. It is seen from the Si and Ta Auger fingerprints that both Si and Ta form oxides due to chemisorption of oxygen on the silicide surface at room temperature. The variations in the Si LVV fingerprint in silicide and the oxygen-exposed silicide are explained in term of surface effects and the behaviour of the 3s orbital in the bondings involved. Electron energy-loss spectroscopy is used to understand the different shallow-level transitions in Ta and the silicide. The electron impact autoionization spectra for TaSi2 and oxygen-exposed TaSi2 are also presented and analysed, along with the Ta NNN fingerprint to show the oxidation in Ta.

Notes: Electrochromatographic studies of several metal ions on lanthanum antimonateimpregnated papers have been carried out. Various background electrolytes were used for these studies at different voltage and time intervals. On the basis of the differential mobilities of metal ions, which depend on the ion exchange properties of lanthanum antimonite and the nature of complex formation with the electrolytes, some important binary and ternary separations have been achieved.

Notes: To study the level of intra- and inter-population variation at hypervariable DNA loci, we have characterized 15 human populations of diverse ethnic and geographic origins at six short tandem repeat loci by using the polymerase chain reaction. Even though the spectrum of allelic variation is quite broad and there are substantial differences in allele frequency distributions among populations, in general, populations within a major racial group show a greater degree of similarity. This observation is reflected in the analysis of gene diversity. When the total diversity is apportioned, the maximum variation becomes attributable to inter-individual differences within a population; of the variation that is attributable to differences between populations within a racial group and differences between racial groups, the former is smaller than the latter. Separate analysis of gene diversity for each of the major population groups based on geographic and ethnic relationship shows that the total gene diversity is higher for the larger racial groups, namely, African, Caucasian and Mongoloid, than the American Indians and the Pacific Islanders. As expected, a reciprocal relationship between gene diversity and FST levels is observed. Higher values of FST in the American Indian and the Pacific Islanders may reflect smaller population size and a higher level of isolation. An analysis of genetic distance encompassing the populations belonging to the three major racial groups recognizes three distinct clusters - all the populations of African affiliation cluster together, as do the Caucasian affiliated and the Mongoloid groups, in two distinct clusters. Interestingly, three broadly classified cosmopolitan US populations, namely, US White, US Black and US Asian, cluster with their ancestrally related populations. This study dispels some of the concerns regarding the applicability of DNA typing data for forensic use.

Notes: The preparation and spectroscopic characterization of [R3Sn(O2CCH2SC5H4N-4)], R == Ph, benzyl (Bz), cyclohexyl (c-Hex) and n-Bu, and of [R3Sn(O2CCH2SC4H3N2-2,6)], R == Me, Ph and n-Bu, are reported. The 2-pyrimidyl compounds feature trigonal bipyramidal tin centres with trans-R3SnO2 geometries as was confirmed by X-ray crystallography for [Ph3Sn(O2CCH2SC4H3N2-2,6)]. ¶ By contrast the 4-pyridyl compounds have trigonal bipyramidal geometries in the solid state (arising from intermolecular Sn…N interaction) and tetrahedral geometries in solution. The biocidal activity of these compounds against the fungi Helminthosporium maydis (ITCC 2675) and H. oryzae (ITCC 2675), both of which damage crops such as maize and rice, shows promise. Encouraging is the observation that the compounds show no adverse phytotoxicity at concentrations to 10-3M.
