Notes: Based on the material balance principle applied to microbial reactions in continuous bioprocesses, the concept of reaction rate control has been developed theoretically. This concept provides a more direct way of controlling biological activities than the control of physical or chemical parameters in practice today. From an analysis of dynamic and steady-state experiments, two control systems for carbon dioxide production rate control during the continuous culture of baker's yeast have been designed and evaluated experimentally. In these control methods, intracellular NADH concentration is used as an immediate indication of the onset of glucose repression. A more sophisticated master controller based on the respiratory quotient can be combined with these control methods. The resulting control system provides a means to indirectly optimize biomass production while preventing ethanol formation in the continuous culture of baker's yeast.

Notes: Two time delay compensation techniques, the Smith predictor and the analytical predictor, are used for bottom composition control of a pilot scale methanol-water distillation column. The closed-loop performance of the two predictor schemes is compared to that for a proportional-integral controller in experimental and simulation studies. The predictors resulted in improved control for both set point and feed flow disturbances.

Notes: The analysis of some bile acids [lithocholic acid (LC), cholic acid (C), chenodeoxycholic acid (CDC), hyodeoxycholic acid (HDC), ursodeoxycholic acid (UDC), β-muricholic acid (β-MC)] by Raman and infrared spectroscopy reveals that hydrophobic bile acids (LC, CDC, C) have their 3α OH bonded by strong intermolecular interactions. Furthermore, the most hydrophobic bile acid (LC), which is practically insoluble in water at room temperature, may be directly related to a polymeric association of its molecules. The hydrophilic bile acids (HDC, UDC, β-MC) possess some free OH bonds. Generally, however, the carboxylic group is implied in a dimeric association. Infrared spectra of diluted bile acids in chloroform give further confirmation because intermolecular bonded line vanishes for the hydrophilic bile acids and remains for hydrophobic ones. Thus, Raman and infrared spectroscopy provide new tools for establishing a rational hydrophobicity/hydrophilicity scale of bile acids. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Biospectroscopy 3: 393-401, 1997

Notes: ions generated from a number of different presursors have been studied by high kinetie energy ion - molecule reations. It has been shown that at least four distinct stable species oeeur, of which acetonitrile and methyl isoeyanide retain their original structure. With imidazole or pyrazole as precursors, a mixture of open thain radical cations, not identical to the above species and probably interconvertible via the 1H-azirine radocal cation, is formed. From butrynitrile, pyrrole, crotonitrile, allyl interconvertible via the and cyanocyopropane a fourth species, probably the vinylidenimine ion, is formed.
