Notes: Alcoholic alkali solutions, such as potassiumt-butoxide int-butanol and potassium hydroxide in ethanol, have been known to remove the covalently bound lipid from the wool fibre surface. In this study, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) have been used to investigate the surface characteristics of unprocessed wool fibres (both base section and weathered tips), wool fabric and the relative effects of potassiumt-butoxide and potassium hydroxide treatments. Results comparing the fibre base and tip confirm that the weathering may result in partial loss of the covalently bound lipid from the tip. In addition, a loss of sulphur has been observed. While the extent of sulphur oxidation on the surface of the base section is insignificant, the tip section may have up to 30% oxidized sulphur. There is no apparent difference between the fibres and the fabric used in this study regarding the levels of carbon, sulphur and oxidation. Potassiumt-butoxide is found to be less effective than potassium hydroxide in removing the surface bound lipid. An explanation is given which supports a hypothesis that the bound lipid is located not only at the outer most surface, but that it is also trapped within the underlying protein layer. The potassiumt-butoxide, due to its bulky molecular structure, may not have easy access to the trapped lipid. While the extent of oxidation of surface sulphur after potassiumt-butoxide treatment is higher compared to that after potassium hydroxide treatment, the levels of sulphur loss caused by these two reagents are similar. The removal of bound surface lipid for fabric is more effective than for fibres. It is suggested that fine-scale damage to the fibre, which has been observed to occur during physical processing, is responsible for this difference.

Notes: The effects of interaction with phospholipids on the conformation of the alternating copolymer, poly(Leu-Lys), and the random copolymer poly(Leu50, Lys50) have been investigated by CD and ir spectroscopy. Poly(Leu-Lys) undergoes a partial unordered → β-sheet transition in solution in the presence of lysolecithin. On addition of lysolecithin plus cholate, an unordered → α -helix transition is observed. In films deposited from these solutions, poly(Leu-Lys) adopts the anti-parallel β-sheet conformation, as in aqueous solutions at moderate ionic strength. Polarized ir spectra showed that the plane of the β-sheet in such films deviates from the plane of the film by no more than 14°. The random copolymer, poly(Leu50, Lys50), is α-helical in the presence of lysolecithin and lysolecithin plus cholate, regardless of whether the sample is a solution or a film. CD measurements on the poly(Leu-Lys) films provide information about the component of the CD tensor for light propagating normal to the plane of the β-sheet. These measurements show (1) a negative n → π* CD band (214 nm maximum) with higher intensity than the average CD for isotropic solution; and (2) a positive band in the π → π* region (195 nm maximum), which is weaker than that in the isotropic spectrum.

Notes: An unusual one-component sealant based on a moisture cure has been developed. The chemistry involves the reaction of a 1,3-dipole (a difunctional nitrile oxide) with a dipolarophile (an unsaturated polymer); a difunctional hydroximoyl chloride, which forms a nitrile oxide on reaction with a latent base, reacts with the polymer on exposure to moisture by forming isoxazoline crosslinks. The hydroximoyl chloride was prepared from a bis(chloroketone) (e.g., 4,4′-bis(chloroacetyl)diphenyl ether), by reaction with nitrous acid; this avoided the use of expensive dialdehydes, as well as hydroxylamine. The preferred latent base was barium oxide, and almost any unsaturated polymer could be used. Such a system, stable indefinitely when dry, crosslinked rapidly when exposed to atmospheric moisture. Since water is generated when the initially formed barium hydroxide reacts with the hydroximoyl chloride, only catalytic amounts are required, and thick beads cure completely; skinning causes problems with other moisturecurable systems.

Notes: Polymerization of free α-amino acids with a pair of reagents-an oxidizing agent (iodine) and a reducing agent (phosphonic acid esters)-was achieved in organic medium in the presence of pyridine or imidazole. A standard procedure leading to optically pure polypeptides with degrees of polymerization up to 50 could be established. Polymeric material was also obtained with a dipeptide as monomer. Some preliminary polymerizations with polyfunctional reagents such as poly(4-vinylpyridine), cyclodiphosphites, or polyphosphites were performed.

Notes: The influence of the lone methyl and the geminal diniethyl group (contained in all aliphatic natural terpene compounds) on the acidcatalyzed cyclization is examined. For this purpose, terpenelike model substances of the geranyl and the lavandulyl series are prepared, in which these substituents are entirely or partly absent. The behaviour of these substances under conditions which have been proved favorable for ring closure of the corresponding normal terpene compounds has been studied.
