Description / Table of Contents: The physical and corrosion-chemical behaviour of IVa metal alloysThe stability of titanium in respect of non-oxidant acids can be considerably increased by alloying it with Zr, Hf, Nb, Mo or Re. In the case of Zr, Hf, Nb and Ta, a decisive improvement of the corrosion behaviour can only be attained if the At-percentage of these metals in the alloys exceeds 50 pC. In the case of molybdenum, a content from 20 pC upwards has already a markedly passivating effect. But the improvement in corrosion properties must be bought at the price of poorer machinability. A particularly effective alloying metal, even in small quantities, is Rhenium. An excellent corrosion resistance and, at the same time, good machinability can be attained with ternary Ti-Mo-Ta alloys (with Mo + Ta accounting for some 20 At-pC) and with a Ti-12Mo-1Re alloy. The alloying of titanium with Zr, Hf, V, Cr or Mo is apt to cause, in some cases, a considerable deterioration in the scaling resistance of titanium. Improvements can be obtained by using small quantities of Nb, W and particularly Ta. Ti-Ta alloys with Ta contents up to 10 At-pC still have a good scaling resistance at 900° C.

    Description / Table of Contents: Jahn-Teller Effect and Crystal Structure Distortion of the Copper Fluoroperovskites NaCuF3 and RbCuF3The crystal structures of triclinic NaCuF3 (a = 539.1, b = 555.2, c = 792.8 pm, α = 90.66, β = 92.05, γ = 86.95°; P1, Z = 4) and of tetragonal RbCuF3, isotypic with KCuF3, (a = 602.3, c = 791.2 pm; I4/mcm, Z = 4), were determined by x-ray methods and refined to wR = 0.038 (2113 reflections) resp. 0.039 (257 reflections). The structures derive from orthorhombic (GdFeO)3 and cubic perovskite type, resp., by Jahn-Teller distortion. The CuF64- octahedra, differently elongated in the two compounds (average NaCuF3: Cu—F = 188.9/197.3/225.6(2) pm; RbCuF3: 188.3/197.8/237.6(3) pm), show the same pattern of antiferrodistortive ordering, but there are bent bridges Cu—F—Cu = 144.2…148.0(1)° in NaCuF3. Structural relations to the prototypes mentioned and to comparably Jahn-Teller distorted copper fluoro compounds are discussed.
    Notes: Die Kristallstrukturen des triklinen NaCuF3 (a = 539,1, b = 555,2, c = 792,8 pm, α = 90,66, β = 92,05, γ = 86,95°; P1, Z = 4) und des tetragonalen, mit KCuF3 isotypen RbCuF3 (a = 602,3, c = 791,2 pm; I4/mcm, Z = 4) wurden röntgenographisch bestimmt und auf wR = 0,038 (2113 Reflexe) bzw. 0,039 (257 Reflexe) verfeinert.

Description / Table of Contents: Structures of Cesium-containing Fluorides. V. Pseudohexagonal Tungsten Bronze Structure of the Monoclinic Phase Cs0.4Zn0.4Fe1.6F6 and Related Cesium Transition Metal FluoridesThe crystal structure of the pseudohexagonale phase Cs0.4Zn0.4Fe1.6F6 was refined in the monoclinic space group P21 (a = 747.4, b = 763.6, c = 746.1 pm, β = 120.0°, z = 3). Using 1067 single crystal reflections R = 6.3% was reached. Compared to the hexagonal tungsten bronze structure the corner-sharing of octahedra shows pronounced angles also along the unique axis (M—F—M = 159.0°). The average bridge angle in the framework of tilted octahedra is 149.6°. Structural relations are discussed.

Description / Table of Contents: Lattice Constants and Ionic Radii of Pyrochlores CsMIIMIIIF6From observed lattice constants a0 of 30 cubic pyrochlores CsMIIMIIIF6 (MII = Mg, Ni, Cu, Zn, Co, Mn; MIII = Ga, Cr, Fe, V, Ti) balanced values ac were calculated, which deviate in average less than 0.1% from the observed ones. Radii rc of the M(II) and M(III) ions are evaluated from the balanced values ac by means of an empiric equation; they reproduce the lattice constants a0 equally well. By analogy derived radii rII and rIII from additional pyrochlores CsMIIMIIIF6 are given and discussed in comparison with tabulated radii and observed M—F distances.
