Description / Table of Contents: Microbial induced corrosion at hydraulic steel structuresSheet pilings of waterways undergo a natural process of corrosion. The average corrosion rate in freshwater is about 0.02 mm/a. Under special conditions, as encountered in this study, corrosion rates may increase drammatically up to 1 mm/a. The damage is signed by ochre coloured and slimy deposits. The rust holes are above the water line and obviously initiated from the land side. Analysis shows the deposits to contain iron oxides and ferro minerals, as well as sulphates and elemental sulphur. Some of these cristalline phases are commonly unstable under normal ambient conditions, but the conditions of pH and redox potential measured at the piling agree well with the range of stability of the minerals detected. Therefore, further research was directed at investigating microbial activity, whereby sulphate reducing bacteria (SRB) were detected. SRB are able to reduce sulphate to sulphide by “sulphate respiration”. The mild steel of the sheet pilings is attacked and iron sulphides are formed. The limitation factor of low sulphate concentration is overcome by the reoxidizing activity of thiobacilli, also detected at the deteriorated sheet piling. Through this coactivity of both kinds of bacteria, sulphur is kept in circulation and not consumed. The sulphur is washed out from coal mining waste used as filling material behind the piling. At the same time, organic material, as carbon source, is provided through ground-water transport from renewed filling material.

Notes: An equilibrium osmometer for the measurement of very low osmotic pressures has been designed. It is constructed of metal and employs a large horizontal membrane. A rapid approach to equilibrium is obtained by the use of a fine capillary and a bacterial cellulose membrane (Masson and Melville) in conjunction with complete thermostatting. To avoid displacement, the membrane is stretched in a frame and held over a grooved domed support of the Carter-Record type. Details of procedure, including concentration estimation and the preparation of membranes, are given.Measurements of the osmotic pressure of a fractionated sample of polystyrene, of molecular weight approximately one million, have served to determine the precision of the osmometer. At a pressure of 0.026 cm. of chloroform, the standard deviation was found to be 0.002 cm. The importance of correcting for the density of the solution, when measuring high molecular weights, is discussed.

Notes: Two α,β-unsaturated thiolactones, 5-(2-propynyl)-2(5H)-thiophenone (5) and 3,5-di(2-propenyl)-2(5H)-thiophenone (6), were newly synthesized. Irradiation (λ = 300 nm) of 5 in MeOH containing cyclopentene afforded a 3:1 mixture of diasteroisomeric methyl 7-thiatricyclo[6.4.0.02,6]dodec-10-ene-12-carboxylates (8a/8b), while irradiation of 6 in MeOH saturated with 2-methylpropene gives a 3:2 mixture of diastereoisomeric methyl 3,3,9-trimethyl-5-thiatricyclo[6.2.1.02,6]undecane-1-carboxylates (10a/10b).

Notes: Many companies are facing the challenge of replacing heavy metal containing pigments in their products because of possible legal restrictions as well as toxicological and environmental considerations. Replacing one pigment in a single formulation is not generally an insurmountable problem, but replacing this pigment in hundreds or perhaps thousands of formulations might generate some anxiety. The purpose of this paper is to review some of the techniques useful for pigment selection. Colorimetric properties and physical characteristics form the basis for logical selection. Chromaticity characteristics, data on relative opacity, migration resistance, hat and light stability of more than thirty pigments will be included. Examples of the use of the techniques illustrating the replacement of chromate pigments in five colors will be presented. Comparative performance data will be included. On the basis of the information presented, limitations in making high chroma yellow will be discussed.

Notes: The crystallographic interactions between the toluenesulfonate-substituted diacetylene 2,4-hexadiynylene di-p-toluenesulfonate (TS), its corresponding polymer (PTS) and polyethylene (PE) have been established in detail with the help of the polymer decoration technique. Although monomer and polymer are known to be isomorphous, the decoration patterns observed on their (100) crystal surface differ significantly, revealing some subtle structural changes on solid-state polymerization. The single and twofold orientations obtained on TS and PTS, respectively, are discussed and shown to be of epitaxial character. The PE contact planes for the two decoration orientations are however, significantly different, since the chain packing distances at play are 5,26 Å (or 4,94 Å) and 7,47 Å, respectively. From the very close similarity in crystal structures, it is anticipated that favourable interactions may also exist in many other polydiacetylene/polymer binary systems.

Notes: Persistent spectral hole burning in chlorin-doped PVB provides a new method to record highly resolved images of extended objects of sufficient luminance such as the sun. The spectral resolution per pixel is much higher than with other methods, with the additional advantage of recording all the information in a single exposure. The signal-to-noise ratio has been greatly improved, making it possible to visualise the rotation of the sun on the basis of the Doppler shift of only one solar line. Since no selection about areas of interest has to be made beforehand (except for the limitations of the material itself), the method provides a useful tool for astronomical applications. However, to make it suitable for a broader range of experiments, new materials with higher quantum yields and a possibly broader inhomogeneous bandwidth would be needed.

Notes: ---The enantiomeric distributions of linalool and linalyl acetate in various natural products are measured by enantioselective gas chromatography on alkyl-substituted cyclodextrins. Different plant cultivars were investigated by four extraction processes: steam distillation, solvent extraction, supercritical fluid extraction, and headspace analysis. Careful attention must be paid to linalool which undergoes partial racemization under certain processing conditions. In most cases, enantiomeric distribution is a powerful tool for authenticity testing.

Notes: This work presents two techniques for testing for the adulteration of flavors. One uses multidimensional gas chromatography on cyclodextrin derivatives to separate chiral compounds, the other uses isotope ratio mass spectrometry coupled with gas chromatography to determine stable isotope ratios. Applications to fruits and plants for the food and perfume industry are introduced.

Notes: Friedel-Crafts reactions of aromatic derivatives with 1,4-dicarbonyls 2,3-éthylenic compounds. Part IV. Reactions of 5-hydroxy or 5-chloro 3,5-dimethyl or 4,5-dimethyl 2 (5 H) furanonesWe studied the Friedel-Crafts reactions of 2-(5H)-furanones. In the presence of sulfuric acid and of an aromatic derivative, 5-hydroxy- or 5-chloro-5-methyl-2-(5H)-furanones with one methyl group either in the 3 position, or in the 4 position generally give the corresponding 5-aryl-2-(5H)-furanones, while with aluminium chloride, it is possible to obtain, when a reaction takes place, isomeric 1H-indenecarboxylic acids. However, in a particular case, an addition to the substrate's double bond is observed. The 3-aryl-5-hydroxy-tetrahydrofuran-2-one obtained is methylated in two ways and gives either a cyclic product, or a linear one. In two cases tautomerism between 1H-1-indenecarboxylic acid and 1H-3-indenecarboxylic has been shown by 1H-NMR.
