Notes: A fluorimetric technique was used to determine detailed residence time and velocity distribution on commercial sieve trays installed in a five-tray, 1.22 m dia. air/water simulator. Results show a strong effect of the gas rate on the residence time distribution. At low air rates, isochron lines of high residence time are found at the column wall, and the variance distributions suggest the existence of zones of different degrees of mixing. The velocity profiles at Fs (vapor velocity load) factors less than 0.65 show severe flow nonuniformities characterized by a high velocity at the centerline and stagnant zone close to the wall. At higher Fs factors the velocity maldistribution seems to be relatively mild. Correlations are presented to estimate the velocity distribution on the tray as a function of the gas rate.

Notes: A further analysis of the second falling-rate period in the drying of thick highly porous textile structures is made, this time in the case of drying wool, special attention being paid to the adsorbed water held by the wool in the air-dry region. As the solid-to-void ratio is low, the quantities of adsorbed water are small and have little effect on the general equilibrium. Values of thermal conductivity are calculated for wet wool.

Notes: A fiber optic technique was used to obtain point residence time distributions at several points on an 8 ft. diam. sieve tray in hydrocarbon service. Residence time patterns were obtained over a wide range of vapor and liquid loadings with the isopropyl alcohol-water system and at both ends of the cyclohexane toluene system. The data reveal severe flow nonuniformities on the tray including nonuniform velocity distribution and retrograde flow near the column walls. The reasons for this behavior are discussed.

Notes: A fiber optic technique for obtaining multiple, simultaneous, point residence time distributions on operating, commercial scale distillation trays is described. The method has sufficient resolution to yield residence time profiles on the tray and to separate tray and downcomer effects. The results indicate severe flow nonuniformities on the tray, which are not accounted for in present models of distillation.

Notes: An experimental investigation was made of oxygen dissociation in a radiofrequency discharge. The conversion and yield were examined as a function of power, pressure, and gas flow rate. These measurements were supplemented by measurements taken with catalytic and noncatalytic thermocouple probes in order to determine the local gas temperature and atomic oxygen concentration. An interpretation of the results is given in terms ofa theoretical model of the reactor.

Notes: The effect of nonuniform velocity distributions and retrograde flow on Murphree tray efficiency has been studied. Both types of nonuniformities were shown to substantially reduce the efficiency of the tray. The results show that the presence of flow nonuniformity alone may result in significant deviations from the efficiency predicted by the AIChE model.

Notes: The drying of two highly porous thick textiles is studied and compared. Extremes are chosen in that one package is composed of a Terylene (British form of a polyester fiber) net fabric of open structure and the other of a woolen flannel of close structure. The cloths are wound as bobbins and dried by hot air streaming in a wind tunnel, the air flowing parallel to the axis of the cylinder of material. The weight of water as drying progresses is measured by a balance, and thermocouples within the bobbin provide a temperature record. On investigation of the thermal conductivity of the dry structure, it is found that whereas the coefficient for the wool-air mixture is constant throughout, the coefficient for the Terylene-air mixture applies only in the depths, the apparent thermal conductivity growing larger toward the surface and with increasing air speed, as if the heat transfer through the open structure is assisted by some form of air penetration. As the thick textiles dry, the rate of evaporation falls off, since heat and water vapor have to pass through an increasing layer of dry material. While this is occurring, a constant temperature, the “pseudo-wet-bulb temperature,” is established throughout the wet cloth. This state of equilibrium may be expressed as an equation between the rate of heat conduction inward and that required to produce the vapor diffusion outward. From this equation the pseudo-wet-bulb temperature can be calculated.
