    Notes: Thin, homogeneous films of a high electron affinity (n-dopable) polymer, poly(3,4-dicyanothiophene) (PDCTh), were prepared by in-situ thermal polymerization of 2,5-diiodo-3,4-dicyanothiophene on substrates. As a result of the presence of two cyano substituents on the thiophene backbone, PDCTh is an electronegative polymer, with the LUMO at ca. 3.6 eV and the HOMO at ca. 6.7 eV. We demonstrate the fabrication of polymer-polymer rectifying heterojunctions using PDCTh and poly(2-methoxy-5-(2′-ethyl-hexyloxy)-1,4-phenylene vinylene) (MEH-PPV) polymer layers on ITO-glass. Rectification ratios in the current voltage characteristics of these devices exceed 10.3 This device exhibits a photovoltaic effect with a dc sensitivity at -3 V reverse bias of 4 × 10-4 A/W or quantum yield of 0.1% electrons/photon. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     Notes: Summary The rhinophores of the veliger larva of Rostanga pulchra are located in the intravelar field near the base of the velar lobes. Each rhinophore is a cylindrical structure, tapering distally, and covered with a dense meshwork of microvilli. A conspicuous row of ciliary tufts runs along each side of the rhinophore and several stiffer tufts, composed of fewer cilia, are positioned around the tip or at the base. The rhinophoral epithelium consists of supporting cells, ciliated cells (giving rise to the ciliary rows), dendritic terminals (giving rise to the tufts around the apex), and sinuses containing occasional amebocytes. The lumen of the rhinophore is occupied by the rhinophoral ganglion and muscle cells that are oriented in two perpendicular planes. Cell bodies of the dendritic endings are located within the rhinophoral ganglion, which in turn joins into the optic and cerebral ganglia. Rhinophoral ganglionic neurons do not synapse with each other, but numerous neuromuscular synapses are found in the lumen of the rhinophore. Morphological evidence suggests that the dendritic endings are chemoreceptors and the ciliated cells are possibly mechanoreceptors but are not functional at this stage in development. The functional role of the rhinophores is discussed in relation to larval behavior at settlement and metamorphosis.

    Notes: Summary The two statocysts of the veliger larva of Rostanga pulchra are positioned within the base of the foot. They are spherical, fluid-filled capsule that contain a large, calcareous statolith and several smaller concretions. The epithelium of the statocyst is composed of 10 ciliated sensory cells (hair cells) and 11 accessory cells. The latter group stains darkly and includes 2 microvillous cells, 7 supporting cells, and 2 glial cells. The hair cells stain lightly and each gives rise to an axon; two types can be distinguished. The first type, in which a minimum of 3 cilia are randomly positioned on the apical cell membrane, is restricted to the upper portion of the statocyst. The second type, in which 9 to 11 cilia are arranged in a slightly curved row, is found exclusively around the base of the statocyst. Each statocyst is connected dorso-laterally to the ipsilateral cerebral ganglion by a short static nerve, formed by axons arising from the hair cells. Ganglionic neurons synapse with these axons as the static nerve enters the cerebral ganglion. The lumen of the statocyst is continuous with a blind constricted canal located beneath the static nerve. A diagram showing the structure of the statocyst and its association with the nervous system is presented. Possible functions of the statocyst in relation to larval behavior are discussed.

    Description / Table of Contents: Surface Composition, Solubility, and the Ion Activity Product of Calcite in Solutions with Auxiliary IonsUsing the method of simultaneous ion and isotope exchange the chemical composition of the surface layer of calcite powder in equilibrium with solutions of varying Me/Ca molar ratios is determined (Me = Mg2+, Co2+, Ni2+, and Fe2+ ions). The ion exchange isotherms show a marked bend in the surface reactivity when a surface molar ration of ∼1 and ∼3 is reached. The solubility of calcite initially decreases on the addition of Co2+ or Ni2+ ions to the solution whereas it increases in the presence of Mg2+ or Fe2+ ions. The activity product of the pseudo compound, CaxMe(1-x)CO3, decreases in the Ni2+, Co2+ or Fe2+ exchange experiments, however, it increases considerably in those with Mg2+ ions.
    Notes: Mit der Methode des gleichzeitigen Ionen- und Isotopenaustausches wird die chemische Zusammensetzung der Oberfläche eines Calcitpulvers im Gleichgewicht mit Lösungen verschiedener Me/Ca- Verhältnisse bestimmt (Me = Mg2+, Co2+, Ni2+, Fe2+). Alle Austauschisothermen zeigen eine deutliche Änderung der Oberflächenreaktivität, wenn eine Zusammensetzung auf der Oberfläche von (Me/Ca)Obfl.∼1 und ∼3 erreicht wird. Die Löslichkeit des Calcits nimmt anfänglich bei Zugabe von Co2+ oder Ni2+ ab, während sie bei Mg2+ oder Fe2+ im ganzen Bereich der Untersuchung zunimmt. Das Ionenaktivitätsprodukt für die „Pseudoverbindung“ in der Oberfläche nimmt in den Ni2+-, Co2+- und Fe2+-Austauschexperimenten ab, in Gegenwart von Mg2+-Ionen jedoch zu.

    Notes: A new program for lipoprotein characterization is outlined where capillary electrophoresis (CE) plays a central role in the analysis of intact lipoprotein serum components and the apoprotein domains. The first characterization step involves separation and particle density analysis of very low-, low-, and high-density lipoprotein fractions (VLDL, LDL, HDL) by ultracentrifugation and image analysis. VLDL, HDL, and LDL fractions are analyzed by capillary electrophoresis. Sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) at low concentrations in the background electrolyte used in the CE analysis is incorporated into the lipoprotein particle without appreciable delipidation, as determined by ultracentrifuge particle density analysis. Increasing the concentration of SDS results in extensive delipidation, resulting in the release of apoproteins (apo) which are detected as components of the electropherogram. Apo B-100 is detected in the delipidated VLDL and LDL fractions along with micelles of the lipids. Micelles from LDL delipidation have uniform charge densities. Apo A-I and A-II are detected in the HDL fraction. A new method for lipoprotein delipidation is introduced where the lipoprotein fraction is adsorbed on a reversed-phase hydrophobic cartridge. Delipidation and recovery of the apoprotein fractions is made by serial clutions with acetonitrile. CE of the lipid-free apoprotein mixture shows the presence of apoC-I,II,III and apoE in the VLDL fraction, and apoA-I,II apoC-I and apoE in the HDL fraction. Electrospray ionization mass spectrometry analysis gives the isoform distribution for each apoprotein. The identification of the apoproteins in the electropherograms is the first step in developing a CE-based quantitation method for measuring serum levels of these apoproteins and their distribution between the lipoprotein fractions. The assay described in this paper is being used as a level 2 and 3 cardiac risk profile analysis for individuals with normal lipid profiles who have a documented or family history of cardiovascular disease.
