Notes: Cycloaddition of the allenic acid 3 with the N -cyclohexyl-N′ -heteroaromatic carbodiimides 2a and 2b gave the isomeric pyrido[1,2-a]pyrimidinones 4 and 5 and thiazolo[3,2-a]pyrimidinones 6 and 7, respectively, instead of the expected Diels-Alder adducts analogous to 1. The compounds of the latter type, i.e. 8 and 9, were formed from 3 and carbodiimides 2c and 2d, respectively, containing an N′-(pyrazin-2-yl) or N′-(pyrimidin-2-yl) substituent.

Notes: The products formed on UV irradiation of several tricyclic compounds (i.e. 3, 6, 8, 15, and 17, Schemes 2-4) were studied in detail. A marked dependence of the reaction course on the type and site of substitution was found. Among the several light-induced transformations, a novel rearrangement, i.e. 11 to 9 (Scheme 3) was identified. The formation of the polycyclic compound 13 on irradiation of 8a (Scheme 3) resulted from an unexpected skeletal rearrangement with dearomatization of one benzene ring. The structures of compounds 10, 11, and 13 were established by X-ray crystallography (Figs. 1-3). An attempt was made to give a general mechanistic picture of all observed photochemical results (Schemes 4-6).

Notes: The synthesis of novel amphiphilic star-graft (SG) copolymers containing hydrophilic poly(oxyethylene) (PEO) side chains attached to a hydrophobic backbone by multifunctional entity is reported. In a first step poly(phthalimidoacrylate-co-styrene) was converted into polymers containing different number of multifunctional branching cites distributed along the main chain by partial aminolysis of the phthalimidoacrylate units with tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane. In the second step, these reactive copolymers yielded SG copolymers with different number of star-shaped PEO side groups by reaction with isocyanato terminated methoxy-PEO. The copolymers were characterized by size-exclusion chromatography, IR-, and NMR-spectroscopy. Their thermal properties were examined by thermal gravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry. The studies indicate that the grafting degree and hydrogen bonding determine to a great extent the behavior of the SG copolymers in solid state and in solution. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Notes: WF6 reacts with HOCH2CF3 to form F5W-OCH2CF3 and cis-WF4(OCH2CF3)2. CsF is added to F5WOCH2CF3, yielding the heptacoordinated anion [F6WOCH2CF3]-, which has a capped octahedral structure with the oxygen ligand in an equatorial position. The first step of the reaction of WF6 with HN(CH2CF3)2 results in F5WN(CH2CF3)2. Excess HN(CH2CF3)2 causes deprotonation, yielding the heptacoordinated [F5W(η2CF3-CHN-CH2CF3)]- anion. This can be described as a tungstaazacyclopropane derivative or a π complex between F5W- and CF3-CHN-CH2CF3. The only case in which MoF6 reacts similarly is the formation of F5Mo-OCH2CF3.

Notes: The phase-structure of PVC-based two-component polymer systems (PVC with PVCA, PMMA, CPE and PIB) was studied by phase-contrast microscopy, dielectric and thermomechanical spectroscopy. The size and distribution of the phases were related to the relaxation properties and mechanical strength. It was found that the PVC-based two-component polymer compounds can be characterized into four main groups which are: Microscopically homogeneous, microscopically heterogeneous, compounds with compatibility limit and macroscopically heterogeneous systems.

Description / Table of Contents: The thermooxidative resistance of poly(ethylene terephthalate), synthesized in the presence of different stabilizers as well as combinations of stabilizers as well as combinations of stabilizers, is studied with the help of the dynamic and isothermal DTA-method. The stabilization coefficients (by the dynamic DTA) and the characteristic induction periods (by the isothermal DTA) are determined. A good correlation is established between the data obtained by both methods.

Description / Table of Contents: There is a number of questions that remains unanswered by the literature regarding mechano-chemical degradation of plastics at the temperatures of processing. The investigations described here were carried out to determine the degree to which different polymers are degraded at the temperatures of processing under the influence of mechanical forces and to determine the relationship between melt viscosity and degree of degradation, as well as to understand the mechanism and the kinetics of degradation.
