Description / Table of Contents: The Preparation of Pure Bromine Chloride and on its Behaviour in Acetonitrile.Pure bromine chloride has successfully been prepared from bromine and chlorine. The bromine was quantitatively chlorinated in solution of difluordichlormethane with a large exess of chlorine at -79°C under irradiation with U.V. light. The bromine chloride so obtained was removed from equilibrium by precipitation under cooling to -120 to -110°C. The solvent and the exess chlorine then were destillad at the same temperature under high vacuum, the system being detached from vacuum as soon as the residue was dry. Using a temperature difference of 1°, the orange-coloured crystalline powder could bee sublimated at -79°C, the resulting beautiful, orange-coloured crystals (m. p. -56,5°C) being completely stable in a trap at -79°C. In acetonitrile as solvent, bromine chloride is stable even at room temperature because of the formation of an adduct with the solvent. In these solutions exists the ionic equilibrium 2 BrClsolv⇄Brsolv+ + BrCl2-.

Description / Table of Contents: N2 is a main product of the electrofluorinations of NH3 and N2H4; NF3 is evolved only in very small quantities. Carbon-bonded nitrogen can be fluorinated to NH3 in much higher yields, though the simultaneous formation of CF4 is disadvantageous; the electrofluorination of pyridine, e.g., renders an NF3 fraction containing 42% CF4. During the electrochemical fluorination of urea, the CO group of which is mainly transformed to COF2 and CO2, NF3 is produced in a current yield of 38%; it contains only 10% CF4. The electrofluorination of urea is a less complicated and less dangerous procedure for the production of NF3 than the electrolysis of molten NH4F · nHF. The electrochemical fluorination of guanidine, aminoguanidine and semicarbazide also renders NF3 in preparative amounts, but also higher percentages of CF4. The electrofluorination of N2F4 and of compounds containing N—N groups (aminoguanidine, semicarbazide) produces N2F4 at best in minute amounts.

Description / Table of Contents: Investigations on the Preparation of Trifluormethyl Compounds of the Elements Mercury, Tellurium, and Xenon(CF3)2Hg is formed from the reactions of C2F6 with Hg, HgX2 (X = Cl, Br, I) or HgO in a chemical plasma. The best yields are obtained with Hg and HgO. The reaction of C2F6 with Te yields (CF3)2Te2, which also can be identified in small amounts from the reactions of C2F6 with TeX4 (X = Cl, Br). A similar reaction with Xe does not give any evidence for the formation of a noble gas compound.
