Notes: Beta particles emitted by radioactive nuclei have a finite depth of penetration in a given medium and hence a certain linear energy transfer value depending upon their initial energy. This property can be utilized to achieve different rates of radiation induced reactions. Various diameter capillaries containing saline solutions of acrylamide and radioactive phosphorus-32 were used in the experiment and the change in viscosity of acrylamide solution was used as an indicator of the amount of energy transferred. Distinctly different rates were observed which were roughly proportional to the diameters of the capillaries containing the solutions. It also appears that irradiation of the polymer solution at 80°C even in the absence of oxygen has an adverse effect on the viscosity. The experimental conditions were chosen to approximate those existing in oil reservoirs.

Notes: Hydrocracking of vacuum gas oil is an important chemical process involving complex reaction mixtures. The reaction is carried out in a trickle-bed reactor, considering reaction kinetics along with such hydrodynamic effects as mass transfer, intraparticle diffusion, and partial wetting. Since reaction kinetics is critical to modeling and simulation of a hydrocracking reactor, a modeling approach needs to capture the complex chemistry of the process, along with the elegance of the solution method. The complex chemistry of hydrocarbon is represented by an elegant continuous lumping approach to modeling. The true boiling point of the mixture is used as the characterization parameter. Since the rate constant of hydrocracking is assumed to be a monotonic function of the true boiling point, it is possible to reformulate mass-balance equations in terms of rate constant as a continuous variable. A novel distribution function p(k, K), which determines the fractional yield distribution of species, was formulated based on data from the cracking patterns of various model compounds. Resulting integrodifferential equations are solved numerically to obtain yields of various fractions as a function of reactor residence time. Model predictions are compared with limited published data to show the utility of the model.

Notes: The understanding of the mechanism of wall-to-bed heat and mass transfer in liquid-fluidized beds requires knowledge of the effect of the motion of individual particles on transfer processes. Experimental studies on the enhancement in mass transfer due to motion of a particle in the proximity of the transfer surface are presented. Mathematical relations based on a mechanistic model are obtained to describe the variation of the enhanced rate with time. The model parameters are correlated in terms of the particle Reynolds number, the wall-to-particle distance, and an interaction parameter that accounts for the background fluid motion. The results of this work would be of use in modeling transfer processes in other liquid-solid systems.

Notes: The transformation of the energy equation from the mass average to the volume average reference frame exposes a pseudo Dufour effect. The theoretical model for absorption into a stagnant liquid including this effect, the heat of absorption, variable density, an interfacial velocity, and an arbitrary equilibrium condition at the interface is able to predict experimental data over a wide range of conditions. The data consisted of liquid temperature profiles and mass transfer rates into a stagnant liquid. The ammonia-water system exhibited interfacial temperature rises from 6.9°K to 18.2°K. The interfacial temperature rise for the propane-decane system was 1.3°K. Simpler theoretical models were able to predict the mass transfer rates or the temperature profiles.

Notes: The synthesis of new nitrido(phthalocyaninato)molybdenum (1-4) and -tungsten complexes (5-7) starting from the corresponding phthalonitriles and MNCl3 (M = Mo, W) is reported. In addition, the reaction of (tBu4Pc)WN (6) with PPh3 leading, after several steps, to the diamagnetic compound (tBu4Pc)WO (7) is described. The reaction of (tBu4Pc)ReN (9) with PPh3 leads to [(tBu4Pc)ReO]2 (12), and of [(C5H11)8Pc]ReN (10) with PPh3 leads, under different conditions, to {[(C5H11)8Pc]ReO}2O (11).
