    Notes: Air-carbon tetrachloride gas streams were dehumidified with cold liquid carbon tetrachloride in a short 4.0-in. diameter column packed with 0.5-in. Raschig rings in an attempt to explain reported unsuccessful attempts to correlate dehumidification data obtained at high solute concentration.The data were in satisfactory agreement with a previously presented correlation if the Schmidt number was evaluated at average film conditions and interfacial conditions were employed with regorous calculation methods to evaluate the mass transfer coefficients.

    Notes: Magnetic resonance imaging is used to make nondestructive experimental measurements of fluid flow velocity and rock porosity inside a brine-filled Casper sand-stone sample during brine injection. Two-dimensional images of these values are obtained in arbitrary cross sections, with pixel sizes on the order of 1 mm2. The data are then statistically analyzed to find the variation of the average interstitial velocity as a function of porosity, as well as frequency distributions for both the velocity and porosity. The results show that as local porosity increases, the local flow velocity increases, according to the empirical relationship, V = 0.0669 φ + 0.0055. Thus, higher porosity regions of the core are better contacted by the displacement fluid. Results also imply bypassing of fluid around the perimeter of the core, indicating the need for a coreholder capable of sustaining higher overburden pressures on the order of 225 psi (1.55 MPa).

    Notes: The initial hydrate forming conditions for the systems ethylene-water and methane-ethylene-water were investigated to about 9,000 lb./sq.in.abs. It was found that at a given pressure the initial hydrate forming temperature for mixtures containing greater than about 65 mole % ethylene was higher than the initial formation temperature for either methane or ethylene. Solid-vapor equilibrium ratios were calculated for the ethylene hydrate. A comparison between experimental and predicted hydrate forming conditions for the system methane-ethylene-propylene-water was made for several different mixtures of these gases. This comparison showed that the predicted hydrate forming temperature was slightly higher than the experimental at a given pressure.

    Notes: Gas holdup and the ratio of the turbulent regime mechanical power consumed in aerated compared to that in nonaerated aqueous phases were measured in two laboratory sized tanks. Standard six-blade turbine (D/T = 1/3), six-blade paddle (D/T = 1/3), and four-blade paddle (D/T = 2/3) impellers were used over a wide range of impeller rotational speed and gas sparging rate. For all systems, the power ratio results were found to fit a semitheoretical correlation (derived from dimensional analysis) involving the impeller Weber number, the aeration number, and the ratio of dispersion and liquid densities. Empirical correlations for gas holdup in water, aqueous solutions of nonelectrolytes, and an aqueous electrolyte solution are given. The overall results lead to the conclusion that power ratio and gas holdup correlations are highly specific to a particular impeller type and are also dependent on the tank size and the liquid phase physicochemical properties.

    Notes: This paper shows how the rigorous critical state criterion enunciated by Willard Gibbs can be used with a recently formulated two-parameter equation of state to obtain an analytical solution to the problem of predicting the critical properties of defined multicomponent mixtures.     Notes: Gas holdups (∊GR) and liquid-phase volumetric oxygen transfer coefficients (kLaT) were measured for a bubble column (BC) and three different external-circulation-loop airlift (ECL-AL) fermentors of 50 to 60 L working volume, using viscous non-Newtonian aqueous solutions of various carboxymethylcelluloses. Some measurements also were done with a viscous Newtonian system (51.8 wt. % sucrose solution).Discussed in this paper are correlations of ∊GR and kLaT with riser superficial gas velocity (0.02 ≦ UGR ≦ 0.26 m/s), the ratio of the downcomer and riser crosssectional areas (0[BC] ≦ Ad/Ar ≦ 0.444), and the effective viscosity of the liquid phase (0.02 ≦ ηeff ≦ 0.5 Pa · s), over the parameter ranges indicated. It is shown that both ∊GR and KLaT are highly dependent upon UGR and Ad/Ar. The effective viscosity has a significant effect on KLaT, but has only a relatively weak affect on ∊GR. The KLaT correlation developed for non-Newtonian systems was extended to include the results obtained for the viscous Newtonian system studied by incorporating the effects of liquid-phase molecular diffusivity, density, and interfacial tension as determined by Nakanoh and Yoshida (1980).
