    Notes: A correlation for the convective heat transfer between a bed of metallic oxides and a flowing gas-solid suspension was obtained experimentally. Four industrially important commercial catalysts with different physical, thermal, and transport properties were used as the bed materials. A wide range of air flow rates and solids to gas loading ratios were used. The correlating parameters, to estimate the convective Nusselt number, were found to be the Reynolds number, the Archimedes number, the solids loading ratio, and the shape factor of the packing materials. Impressive increases in heat transfer rates were observed with increased solids loading.

    Notes: Fluid catalytic cracking, a common secondary process employed in the petroleum industry, is used to convert heavier feedstocks into products such as liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), motor gasoline, diesel etc. The present study focuses on developing a three lump fraction kinetic model to estimate the yield of C5 up to 370°C cut (motor gasoline and middle distillates). A Micro Activity Test (MAT) apparatus was used to estimate the parameters in the kinetic model. The study is useful in evolving a procedure to simulate plant performance using experimental data obtained in the MAT apparatus for a particular catalyst and feedstock in terms of the product yield pattern.

    Notes: The performance of packed bed adiabatic gas absorbers has been analyzed using the enthalpy and material balance equations incorporating a new parameter, fr, defined as the fraction of the heat of absorption that is accounted for in the gas stream. An experimental programme to evaluate fr was carried out and the data correlated. It was found that fr was dependent on the thermo-physical properties and the hydrodynamic conditions. It is postulated that the mechanism by which this heat transfer occurs is by turbulence at the interface and by entrainment.

    Description / Table of Contents: Anodisches Verhalten von Messing - Untersuchung mit der RingscheibenelektrodeUnter Verwendung von Ring-Scheibenelektroden wurde die Auflösung von Messing in Natriumsulfat, Natriumchlorid, Ammoniumchlorid, Salz- und Schwefelsäure sowie deren Gemischen untersucht. Mit Hilfe von Potential-Strom-Kurven wurde der Einfluß von Konzentration, pH, Rotationsgeschwindigkeit, Belüftung sowie den zusätzlichen Anionen und Kationen ermittelt. Die Ergebnisse zeigen die Bereiche der bevorzugten Auflösung von Zink und der gleichzeitigen Auflösung von Kupfer und Zink sowie die entsprechenden Tafel-Neigungen.
    Notes: Using electrodes of the ring-disc type the authors have investigated the dissolution of brass in sodium sulfate, sodium chloride, ammonium chloride and hydrochloric and sulfuric acids as well as mixtures of these chemicals. Using potential current curves the influence has been assessed of concentration, pH, speed of rotation, aeration and additional anions and cations. The results obtained show the ranges of preferential dissolution of zinc, the simultaneous dissolution of copper and zinc and corresponding Tafel slopes.

    Description / Table of Contents: Es wurden modifizierte Copolymere oder Kompatibilisierungsmittel hergestellt, um Duromere (Phenol-Formaldehyd-Harze) und Thermoplaste (Polymethylmethacrylat/Polystyrol) zu mischen. Zwei Kompatibilisierungsmittel, modifiziertes Phenol-Formaldehyd-(s-triazin)-Polystyrol(P(PF-g-S)) und Poly(Zimtaldehyd-co-oxipropylen-oxi-isophthaloyl-co-oxipropylen-oxifumaroyl (P-(C-g-E))) wurden hergestellt und charakterisiert. Das Verhalten der Kompatibilisierungsmittel gegen UV unter Vakuum und Hitze wurde an P(PF-g-S) und P(C-g-E) mit niedrigem Molekulargewichtuntersucht. Vernetzung trat wührend der ersten 20 h der UV Bestrahlung unter Vakuum auf, sie wurde über Löslichkeits- und Quellungsdaten festgestellt. In der An-fangsphase der thermischen Belastung wurden die thermoplastischen Segmente im P(PF-g S) abgebaut, bei weiterer Wärmeeinwirkung vernetzten die radikalischen Bruchstücke und die phenolischen Segmente.Über Durchdringungsnetzwerke (interpenetrating networks) wurde das Molekulargewicht der P(PF-g-S) und der verwandten Copolymeren erhöht, was fur die vorliegenden Polymere erforderlich ist. Kondensationsreaktionen in phenolischen Segmenten und Additionsreaktionen in thermoplastischen Segmenten wurden gleichzeitig durchgeführt, erstere thermisch und letztere durch Photobestrahlung.
    Notes: Modified copolymers or compatibilizers were prepared to blend thermosetting (phenol formaldehyde resin) and thermoplastic (PMMA/PS) polymers. Two compatibilizers, modified phenol formaldehyde-(s-triazine)-polystyrene, P(PF-g-S) and poly-(cinnamaldehyde-co-oxypropyleneoxyisophthaloyl-co-oxypropyleneoxyfumaroyl), P(C-g-E), were synthesized and characterized. The behaviour of the compatibilizers towards UV vacuum irradiation and heat was studied with low molecular weight P(PF-g-S) and P(C-g-E). Crosslinking was found to occur during the initial 20 h of UV vacuum irradiation, which was confirmed by solubility and swelling data. Thermal degradation of thermoplastic segments in P(PF-g-S) was found to occur initially during thermal exposure. Crosslinking of the degraded radical fragments and phenolic segments took place in the continued thermal exposure.A method yielding a simultaneous interpenetrating network (SIN) was adopted to increase the molecular weight of P(PF-g-S) and its allied copolymers which is a prerequisite for the present polymer blends. Condensation reaction in phenolic segments and addition reaction in thermoplastic segments were carried out simultaneously, the former reaction was carried out thermally and the latter by photo irradiation.

    Description / Table of Contents: Membranen aus Blends von Nylon 6 mit Poly(acrylsäure) (PAA) mit PAA-Gehalten zwischen 25 und 45 Gew.-% wurden durch Filmgießen hergestellt und anschließend durch Eintauchen in eine Aluminiumsalzlösung ionisch vernetzt. Die Glasübergangstemperaturen (Tg) der Membranen wurden mit der DSC-Methode bestimmt. Alle Proben zeigen eine einzige Tg oberhalb der Tg der Homopolymeren, die sich mit zunehmender Scanzeit verschiebt; dies wird auf die Eliminierung von Wasser und die Bildung von Anhydriden im nicht vernetzten PAA-Anteil zurückgeführt.Die Morphologie wurde rasterelektronenmikroskopisch untersucht; die Membranen zeigen eine dichte, porenfreie Struktur ohne Phasenseparation, was auf eine völlige Mischbarkeit der beiden Homopolymeren im untersuchten Zusammensensetzungsbereich schließen läßt. Die Festigkeit der Membranen liegt je nach PAA-Gehalt zwischen 5 und 26 MPa; Membranen mit hohem PAA-Anteil zeigen trotz höherer Vernetzungsdichte eine geringere Zugfestigkeit, was mit der geringen Festigkeit von PAA und der mit größerem PAA-Anteil zunehmenden Quellung zusammenhängt. Letztere wurde durch Messen der Wasseraufnahme trockener Membranen bestimmt; sie steigt von 23,6 Gew.-% bei einem PAA-Gehalt von 25 auf 76,3 Gew.-% bei einem PAA-Gehalt von 45 Gew.-%.
    Notes: Ionically crosslinked blended membranes were prepared from blends of nylon 6 and poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) with the proportion of PAA ranging from 25 to 45 wt.-%. The technique consists of casting a film of the blend, followed by drying and immersion in an aluminum salt crosslinking solution for a predetermined time. The glass transition temperature (Tg) of the membranes was determined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). All the samples exhibited a single Tg, which is higher than that of either polymer. There is also a shift in the Tg with increasing scanning time. This phenomenon is attributed to the elimination of water molecules and the formation of anhydrides in the non-crosslinked PAA portion of the membrane. The membrane morphology was studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and shows a dense structure without any pores. No phase separation is observed by scanning cross-sections of the samples, indicating that nylon 6 and PAA are completely miscible in the ranges studied. The membrane material strength lies in the range of 5 to 26 MPa and varies with the amount of PAA in the membrane. Samples with higher PAA content show lower tensile strength in spite of increased crosslinking density. This is due to the inherent low strength of PAA, coupled with increasing swelling of the membrane with increasing PAA content. The latter is confirmed by the measurement of water uptake into a dry membrane which increases from 23.6% to 76.3% with the membrane PAA content increasing from 25 to 45 wt.%.

    Notes: Strenuous physical activity is known to increase the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), associated with depletion of antioxidant defence. In the present work we evaluated the level of lipid peroxidation and antioxidant components in blood of sportsmen under resting conditions and compared the data obtained with those in age- and sex-matched sedentary controls. A significant increase was noted in the levels of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) and conjugated dienes while a decrease was observed in ascorbic acid and glutathione levels in sportsmen. α-Tocopherol was unaltered in plasma of sportsmen as compared to controls. The activity of superoxide dismutase was increased (52 per cent) and glutathione peroxidase was decreased (43 per cent) in the erythrocytes of sportsmen compared to controls. Basal glutathione levels were negatively correlated with conjugated dienes and maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) of the subjects. Dietary supplementation with antioxidant vitamins has been shown to be beneficial in combating oxidative stress without enhancing performance while exogenous glutathione was found to influence the endurance capacity of athletes. Such studies demonstrate the critical role played by glutathione and suggest that intervention trials should include a mixture of antioxidants rather than a single antioxidant.
