Description / Table of Contents: Es wurden Zn- und Cd-Komplexe mit den Liganden o-Carboxyphenyl-dimethylarsin, o-Carboxyphenyl-diphenylarsin und o-Carboxyphenyl-di(p-tolyl)-arsin dargestellt.
Notes: The complexes of zinc(II) and cadmium(II) have been prepared with the ligands o-carboxyphenyldimethylarsine, o-carboxyphenyldiphenylarsine and o-carboxyphenyldi(p-tolyl) arsine. The complexes of cadmium(II) with all the ligands and that of zinc(II) with the latter two have been assigned the general formula M(OOC·C6H4·AsR2)2 and appear to be octahedral due to their polymeric nature. Zinc(II) forms complex, Zn(OOC·C6H4·AsMe2)2·Me2 As·C6H4COOH, with the first ligand which is pentacoordinated.

Notes: Aqueous solutions of ribonuclease and human serum albumin were subjected to periods of controlled heating and the nuclear magnetic spin-lattice relaxation times, T1, of the water protons measured. The heat treatment causes an initial increase in the relaxation times of the water protons. These T1 variations indicate that a configurational change, compatible with a disordering of the protein structure occurs, which involves an increase in various modes of internal mobility. The T1 measurements also indicate a close, ordered association of the water molecules and the protein.

Notes: Expressions were derived relating changes of intrinsic viscosity to reaction time, based on a scheme previously presented for the uncatalyzed, uninhibited thermal oxidation of polyolefins. A value of the kinetic parameter A may be obtained from these expressions by using an iterative type of procedure and employing data presented by other workers for the oxidation of atactic polybutene-1. This value of A was compared with the corresponding value obtained by the authors from rate of carbonyl formation studies in oxidation of atactic polybutene-1 by means of infrared absorption spectroscopy methods. The good agreement between the values of A obtained from the two different experimental techniques employed lends further support to the validity of the scheme used and the expressions derived therefrom.

Notes: Acid soluble extracts obtained at 30 min intervals from cells of C. utilis growing in synchrony in a phased culture (cycle time 51/2 hr) were fractionated on a Dowex-1-formate column. The series of fractionation profiles showed changes in number and amounts of components over the cell cycle. Transient accumulations of numerous components over the complex pool were observed. The significance of the changes are discussed in relation to practical applications and cell metabolism.

Notes: Continuous phased growth produces a culture in which most of the cells in the population are in the same stage of their development. The cell, thereby amplified by the size of the synchronous population, may be examined in the phased culture at any desired growth rate. Changes taking place in the cell after the cell cycle, i.e., post-cycle changes, may be examined by a modification of the procedure. Further systematic applications of the method permit a rational approach to problems of cell growth and metabolism. The phasing technique recognizes the cells as the fundamental unit for experimental investigation, and offers a great potential in the analysis of the cell throughout its cycle, a relatively unexploited field in cell physiology and fermentation. Experiments with yeasts and bacteria illustrate some of the applications and progress made so far.

Description / Table of Contents: Inhibition of copper corrosion in sodium hydroxide solutionsThe authors have investigated the effect of 30 organic substances on the corrosion of copper in aqueous NaOH solutions (0.2, 0.5 and 1.0 n). The following substances were found to be effective inhibitors: resorcin, phloroglucin, pyragallol, tanni, β-naphthom, m and p-aminophenol, glucose, furfural, cyclohexanon, 8-oxychinolin, hydrazine sulphate, chinalizarine, hydrochinon, sodium diethyldithiocarbamate, sodium rhodizonate, gallocyanine and acriflavine. In most cases, the inhibition effect is due to a covering layer of reaction products of metal, inhibitor and hydroxide. The decisive factor is the stability of the covering layer with the different lye concentrations.

Description / Table of Contents: Inhibition of copper corrosion in hydrochloric solutionsFurfural is one of the best corrosion inhibitors of copper in hydrochloric acid. The inhibition effect ranges from 90 to 100 per cent. With increasing acid concentration, the quantity of furfural required for effective corrosion inhibition becomes smaller. By means of polarisation measurements, it can be found that, in 0.2 n and 1.0 n HCl, the inhibitor has an essential anodic effect and the cathode becomes depolarised whilst, in 2.0 n and 3.0 n HCl, the anodic zone is virtually unchanged and there is a considerable polarisation in the cathodic zone. The protective effect of furfural is probably due to its resin forming capacity.

Notes: A generalized equation explicitly relating reduced density to reduced temperature and reduced pressure has been developed for calculating liquid densities of pure compounds on a digital computer. The analytical formulation is based mainly on a modified corresponding states principle and the graphical correlation of Lydersen, Greenkorn, and Hougen. The calculated densities from the equation reproduce the literature data within 2% for sixty-two saturated liquids and nineteen compressed liquids. With the aid of a pseudocritical method and a generalized equation of vapor pressure, the same equation is readily applied to the estimation of liquid mixture densities. The method of Prausnitz and Gunn is chosen for the evaluation of pseudocritical constants. For fifteen binary systems, one ternary system, and one quinary system, the one hundred fifty-nine calculated densities agree with the literature data to within 3%. This method is limited to pseudoreduced temperatures less than 1.0.

Notes: The factors affecting the efficacy of a closely packed bed of mixed cotton and a supporting fiber (Teflon, glass, Dynel) were evaluated for oil-in-water dispersions. Several other water-organic systems were also tested. Superficial velocities ranged from 0.2 to 3.5 ft./min. Successful coalescence was attained at interfacial tensions as low as 3.5 dynes/cm. Dispersed phase viscosity was varied form 1.4 to 137 centipoise. For a mixed-fiber bed with a specific ratio of fiber species, there is an optimum bed depth for best performance. High-speed cinephotomicrographic observations at 100 × and up to 4,000 frames/sec. indicated that fiber wettability is not the most important factor for successful operation.
