Description / Table of Contents:
The reaction between CaC2 and SiO2, partly in presence of CaO, is investigated at 1250°C. At a weight ratio CaC2:SiO2 ≤ 1:1, the silicates α-CaSiO3, Ca3Si2O7, β-Ca2SiO4 and γ-Ca2SiO4 are formed in order of decreasing SiO2 content of the reaction mixture. SiC is also obtained. With CaC2:SiO2 〉 1:1, the reaction yields β-SiC and a hitherto unknown calcium silicate, designated as „αs“-Ca2SiO4. The new compound is characterised by chemical analysis, its X-ray pattern and infrared spectrum. It is a high-temperature modification, probably stabilized by CaC2 and/or free carbon.γ-Ca2SiO4 does not react with CaC2 to form SiC but is completely stabilized as „αs“-Ca2SiO4.At 1250°C, about 70% of the SiO2 content of the reaction mixture react with excess of CaC2 forming SiC; lowering the temperature reduces the formation of SiC.The free enthalpies of the probable reactions have been calculated.
Notes:
