Notes: The translational energy, T, released during CH3· loss from the molecular ions of epimeric steroid ketones and from both molecular and [M-H2O]+· ions of epimeric alcohols of the androstane, pregnane and cholestane series, differing in the mode of the A/B ring junction, has been measured. These data provide a simple and rapid method for identifying the configuration of the epimeric centres. Of the compounds studied, it is found in 3-hydroxy steroids that the 5β-isomers release the smaller amounts of translational energy for CH3· loss. In most of the 3-keto steroids investigated, the opposite is found, i.e. the larger T values are observed for the 5β-isomers. Exceptions occur when further keto groups are introduced at the 11- or 17-positions. A small range of epimeric pairs of 17-hydroxy, 17-keto and 4-keto steroids have also been studied, the 5β-isomer giving the lower T value in each case. The importance of hydroxy and keto groups at the various sites within the steroid structure in determining the T values is discussed.

Notes: Polymers containing functional end groups, the structure of which was established by elemental analysis, IR and PMR spectra, were obtained by reaction of polyisobutylene with sulphenylchlorides. Dehydrochlorination is shown to accompany the modification on high concentrations of sulphenylchlorides. The nature of functional groups and polyisobutylene molecular weight is considered with respect to their effect on the products modified.

Notes: This paper deals with defining the relation between modeling of process units and controller design. In the process industries, it is often difficult to obtain accurate process models. It is shown that advanced algorithms such as dead-time compensators require more detailed process information for design than do with PI and PID controllers. A method is described to systematically evaluate the relation between process identification and controller design, stability, and performance. It is shown that conventional gain and phase margins do not provide proper safety margins for dead-time compensators and optimal controllers. Methods for safe design of dead-time compensators are derived, and the approach could be useful in a wide class of problems. To illustrate the approach presented, the design of PI controllers by conventional methods is analyzed. The conditions, as well as the exceptions, are specified in which methods such as described by Ziegler and Nichols or Cohen and Coon will give good results. It is shown that for any stable nonlinear system with an input/output function y = G*p(u), a linearized design function G′pd can be constructed and identified that guarantees stability and reasonable performance of the controller (Eqs. 21 and 22 and Figures 4-7) over a wide range of operating conditions. A rigorous framework for identifying the exceptions and understanding the reason why such methods work is presented.

Notes: A new flexible method has been developed for modelling multistage multicomponent separation processes. The method is based on the simultaneous modular approach and can be referred to as a quasilinear two-level modelling. The network is solved within each iteration as a linear one, and after each network solution the split streams are updated modularly using nonlinear submodels. The method is suited for modelling the most important separation processes with arbitrary structure and permits to use different models for the subunits or processing units. Illustrative examples and computational results are presented showing the efficiency, flexibility and capability of the method.

Notes: It is conventional to describe the relationship between the specific rate of microbial growth and the concentration of the inhibitory substrate in terms of the Andrews-Edwards equation. A novel method for establishing the constants of this equation is presented. The equation is transformed to a polynomial and the empirical data are approximated by a quadratic polynomial. The results obtained for the biodegradation of phenol in a mixed culture (activated sludge) are discussed.

Notes: Glucose oxidase was immobilized by covalent bond to two basic types of sorbents - glycidylmethacrylate copolymers and bead cellulose. These two types of carries were chemically modified, if needed, by the employing various procedures and subsequently used in the immobilization of native and oxidized glucose oxidase. The samples thus obtained were compared with those of immobilized glucose oxidase bound onto some common carriers. Samples which possessed not only a high absolute activity but also adequate mechanical and flow properties were characterized in greater detail with respect to the immobilization efficiency and kinetic properties of bound glucose oxidase.
