Notes: Saccharomyces cerevisiae CBS 426 was grown aerobically and anaerobically in a glucose-limited chemostat. The flows of biomass, glucose, ethanol, carbon dioxide, oxygen, glycerol, and the elemental composition of the biomass were measured. Models for anaerobic and aerobic growth are constructed. Values for YATP and P/O are obtained from continuous culture data for aerobic growth; this YATP value is compared with that obtained from the anaerobic growth results. The ratio between the heat produced and the oxygen consumed increases if more glucose in fermented to ethanol and carbon dioxide. An equation for φH/φO as a function of the respiratory quotient is given.

Notes: Isotope dilution mass spectrometry is one of the best candidates for reference and definitive methods for the quantitative measurement of organic compounds. In this study sources of error were investigated. Where possible they were removed, and commercially available equipment had to be modified. The method was applied to the measurement of serum cholesterol. The precision is optimized and in the order of 0.5%. The mean of the recoveries of three measurements is 99.8%. The accuracy of the mean of three measurements is 0.2% if no interference are present in the gas chromatographic mass spectrometric measurements.

Notes: We have determined the interaction second virial coefficients (B12) for the CO2 — C2H6 system between 250 and 300K using a Burnett-isochoric apparatus. The technique follows a procedure suggested by Hall and Eubank (1973) and extended by Holste et al. (1980). Combined errors for B12 are within 1.2 cm3/mol. In addition, values for the binary interaction parameter k12 calculated from our B12 values show difinite temperature dependence.

Notes: Electrochemical measurements of overall mass transfer rates from a single sphere have been performed in a highly turbulent liquid. The increase in mass transfer rate due to turbulence has been shown to be more important at high Reynolds number and high turbulence intensity. Various equations of correlation have been proposed between the overall Sherwood number, the Reynolds number and turbulence intensity, the simplest one being \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$$ Sh = 6.82\,{\mathop{Re}\nolimits} ^{0.559}\, Tu^{0.069} $$\end{document} A correct agreement has been found with previous heat or mass transfer results between a gas and a sphere.

Notes: A one-dimensional model has been developed to account for the physicochemical processes occurring inside a burning wet coal surface. The model considers the vaporization of coal moisture and the existence of a moving evaporation front, pyrolysis and char/gas reactions in the hot zone, molecular diffusion and Darcy flow through the dry porous coal, transpiration cooling effect of the water vapor and pyrolysis gases, temperature-dependent reaction kinetics and coal thermal conductivity, and variable porousity of the coal due to pyrolysis and char/gas reactions. The model and associated assumptions have been verified with experimental data from the combustion and drying of coal. The results also show that the model prediction of the heat transferred from the coal surface into the coal is much higher than that calculated by the simple heat conduction equation. The fraction of the water in the coal that reacts with char is shown as a function of the linear burn velocity and the surface temperature. In addition, the effect of variations in coal moisture and the thermal conductivity on the thickness of the dry zone are also shwon.

Notes: The development of a design of a continuous sterilization is considered with regard to practical data for temperature/time thermal deactivation of infecting organisms. An example of the optimization of the engineering design for capital and operating costs is given. Systems for continuous sterilization by membrane filtration are also considered.

Notes: Auger sputter profiles of thin AI films on InP are presented and shown to be susceptible to an unusual type of ion beam induced interfacial distortion. It is found that recoil implantation and atomic mixing produce a differential broadening of the In and P at the interface which can seriously affect the integrity of the Auger profile. Energy shifts in the AI Auger peak indicate that this distortion is associated with AIP formation to a depth dictated by the ion beam energy and species. Experimental requirements for the reduction of interfacial distortion are discussed. We also consider the influence of the ion beam on the topography and morphology of the InP surface in relation to interfacial distortion.

Notes: A confirmation method which can be used in regulatory screening programs for diethylstilbestrol in the urine of cattle is presented. trans- Diethylstilbestrol is purified from urine by Sep-Pak extraction and high-performance liquid chromatography and converted into its trimethylsilyl derivative. Identification is based on both accurate mass measurement of the molecular ion of trans-diethylstilbestrol trimethylsilyl by gas chromatography high resolution mass spectrometry and determination of the [M + 1]+/[M]+ peak height ratio by selected ion monitoring in low resolution. Specificity is such that on the basis of mass spectrometric data alone, all molecular formulae except those of diethylstilbestrol trimethylsilyl and only one other compound can be excluded. Additional specificity is provided by chromatographic data. The quantification is based on the standard addition method. The average recovery of trans-diethylstilbestrol is 76% with a standard deviation of 18% (n = 23).

Notes: Considerable work has been published on the subject of filling reaction injection molded (RIM) polyurethane elastomers with discontinuous particulate fillers such as milled glass fibers, flake glass and wollastonite, RIM polyurethane elastomers are filled for three reasons: (1) to increase stiffness, (2) to decrease the linear coefficient of thermal expansion, and (3) to improve thermal dimensional stability. Discontinuous particulate fillers either do not appreciably change strength properties, e.g., tensile strength or they cause dramatic reduction in strength properties, e.g., impact resistance. To overcome these deficiencies, new fillers are necessary. Once such material is continuous glass strand mat. In order to make continuous glass strand-polyurethane composites by the RIM process, a particular balance of ingredients to produce the RIM polyurethane must be used. We will discuss the properties of these composites and suggest possible applications and future directions in which this research might proceed.
