Notes: dl-β-Bulnesene (1) and dl-1-epi-α-bulnesene (15) have been synthesized starting from the bromide 4 (Schemes 2 and 3). In the key step 9→10 the bonds of the final product were formed by an intramolecular photoaddition. The synthesis was completed by the fragmentation 12→14 and the Wittig reaction 14→15+1.

Notes: Whereas the radiation-induced polymerization of crystalline barium methacrylate monohydrate has been well established there have been conflicting reports concerning barium methacrylate anhydrate. We have now shown that the yields of high molecular weight polymer are negligible if adequate precautions are taken to prevent polymerization occurring during the separation of polymer from residual monomer. However, monomer losses of up to 80% have been observed by titration of C=C bonds with bromine and confirmed by decreases in the appropriate infrared absorptions. X-ray diffraction studies showed that the crystalline lattice was largely destroyed during the reaction. ESR spectra indicate that initial trapped radicals are converted into propagating radicals with a different conformation than has been reported for the monohydrate.

Notes: The solution viscosity of polymer thickened hydrocarbons normally decreases markedly as temperature is increased. It has been observed that metal sulfonate ionomers, such as sulfonated ethylene propylene terpolymer, or sulfo-EPDM, when dissolved in a mixed solvent behave much differently. Specifically, sulfonated ionomers, dissolved in xylene or paraffinic oils with low levels of a polar cosolvent, can provide solutions whose viscosities are either relatively constant or can actually increase with increasing temperature. This isoviscosity effect can be manifested over broad temperature ranges and is mechanistically different from the behavior of conventional polymer solutions. This unusual behavior is explained on the basis of a simple equilibrium involving solvated ion pairs and is shown to be a specific example of a general phenomenon.

Notes: A computerized fermentation system was developed for use in a research environment. Major goals in the design and construction of the system were flexibility and versatility. Direct digital control is employed for all low-level and high-level control loops. A microminicomputer hierarchical configuration is used to implement this control structure. The microcomputer is also utilized to simplify the interface with the fermentor, both at the hardware and minicomputer software levels. This computerized fermentation system provides accurate data acquisition, excellent control, and flexibility in the fermentation operation.

Notes: The effect of thermal coefficient of expansion (α) mismatch on porcelain-metal bonding is frequently referred to in the dental literature. Thermally induced stresses may develop at metal-porcelain system interfaces due to differences in the coefficients of thermal expansion of the porcelains, metals, and metal oxides. The objective of this research is to characterize alloy and porcelain expansion behavior as a first step in developing a more specific definition of thermal compatibility. It is clear from comparisons of porcelain data and alloy data that the porcelain has expansion characteristics which are quite different from those of the alloys. The overall differences in values between these alloys and porcelains constitute a mismatch. First run dilatometric heating measurements for porcelain yield large differences between ΔL/L and α values as compared to cooling measurements. For a comparison of alloy and porcelain expansion characteristics, data should be obtained at several temperatures up to the glass transition temperature (Tg) of the porcelain.

Notes: This short report concentrates on a close look at the immunological status of experimental animals which were implanted with a known dose of tumor and polymer implant. The implanted polymers used represented the most common biocompatible materials employed in current surgery. The immunological studies all were done in vitro on the cellular level. The studies suggested that there is a noticeable change of the immune system when inorganic biocompatible polymers are used in experimental animals.

Notes: Biochemical features of pseudomembrane formed at the bone-cement interface of 13 failed total hip replacements were studied and histological examination of the pseudomembrane was conducted. The results of biochemical analyses revealed on average hydroxyproline, 86 μg/mg; water content, 57%; hexosamine, 12 μg/mg; glucosamine/galactosamine, 1.4%; and calcium, 2.1%. Approximately 78% of collagen was extracted with pepsin, whereas only 8 and 0.3% collagen were extracted with acetic acid and neutral salt, respectively. On further differential salting out of the extracted collagen, about 77% was type I collagen, 19% type III, and 2.6% type V. Unlike pseudoarthrosis of fracture, no type II collagen was identified. Overall biochemical features in the light of the histological appearance suggested that pseudomembrane resembles granulation tissue. Bone healing mechanisms at the bone-cement interface appear to differ from that of fracture healing.

Notes: The analysis of antimalarials by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC)/mass spectrometry demonstrates a new dimension in specificity along with increased sensitivity compared to conventional HPLC detection methods. Both direct liquid introduction and thermospray HPLC/mass spectrometry interfaces provided molecular weight information as well as characteristic fragment ions for antimalarials not normally amenable to direct probe or gas chromatographic/mass spectrometric techniques. The direct liquid introduction interface, which incorporated a 1/100 split, showed a detection limit of 30 ng using selected ion monitoring. The thermospray technique showed less than 1 ng detection limits using selected ion monitoring.

Notes: The voltage pulsing of the collision cell on a mass-analysed ion kinetic energy spectrometer allows simultaneous kinetic energy release measurements for unimolecular (T(V)), collision-induced (TCID(V)) and composite unimolecular and collision-induced (Tcomp(V)) decomposition processes in the time frame of a capillary gas chromatographic peak. The information gained by voltage pulsing sometimes allows more reliable isomer identification than by kinetic energy release measurements made in the non-pulsing mode alone. Presented are T(V), TCID(V) and Tcomp(V), and the ratio of their intensities for a number of isomeric halogenated compounds.
