Notes: Rates of the MgCl2-catalyzed reaction between cellulose and 4,5-dihydroxy-1,3-bis(hydroxymethyl)-2-imidazolidinone were measured at 70, 90, and 110°C. The rate constants were determined by curing the resin for various times, extracting the unreacted resin, and determining its concentration by liquid chromatography. The energy of activation was calculated from the rate data. This work confirms the pseudo-first-order behavior of this reaction.

Notes: A model N-methylol reactant system based on pyrrolidone derivatives has been used to study the chemical factors that control formaldehyde release. Fabric samples of known composition were prepared from chemically pure reactants and formaldehyde release was determined by the AATCC Sealed Jar Test. This work provides support for prior suggestions and a more direct approach for understanding unexpected results from tests on post-and precure fabrics. In addition, new findings demonstrate that the N-methylol reactant, its byproducts, and pure zinc nitrate are capable of reducing the level of formaldehyde release.

Notes: Residues remaining after drying and curing cotton fabric with either sodium bisulfate or zinc nitrate and N-methylolpyrrolidone, a monofunctional model durable press agent, have been quantitated by high performance liquid chromatography. The residues were identified as pyrrolidone, N-methylolpyrrolidone, N,N′-methylene-bis-2-pyrrolidone, and N,N′-(oxydimethylene)bis-2-pyrrolidone. The two catalysts fixed approximately the same amount of the N-methylolpyrrolidone to cellulose, but generated different ratios of the extractable residues. A comparison of the levels of these residues that are capable of releasing formaldehyde is given. The dominant residue from the NaHSO4 treatment was N-methylolpyrrolidone, while zinc nitrate generated more N,N′-(oxydimethylene)bis-2-pyrrolidone.

Notes: Studies on the Hydrolysis of Aromatic SulfochloridesThe hydrolysis of aromatic sulfochlorides can bei described by a second-order law. Due to the strength of the base the constants of velocity are between 10-6 (H2O) or 103 (OH-) 1 mol -1 s-1 respectively. The reaction of benzensulfochlorides proceeds according to an addition-elimination mechanism, whereas benzylic sulfochlorides, reacting with a strong base, proceed to an elimination-addition mechanism.

Description / Table of Contents: Novel High Pressure Modifications of Rare Earth Trichlorides in the RhF3-TypeThe results of high pressure investigations on Rare Earth trichlorides crystallizing with the AlCl3-type arrangement under normal conditions are reported. In addition to the PuBr3-type geometry, formed at higher pressures, a new structure type is found in a lower pressure range. This high pressure phase is isotypic with the RhF3-type arrangement, which so far has only been found with fluorides. It is packed more efficiently and shows a slightly higher primary coordination due to the higher symmetry of the coordination polyhedra compared with that of the original AlCl3-type structure. We present a model for the mechanism of transformation.

Description / Table of Contents: PuBr3 Type as High Pressure Modification of Rare Earth Trihalides LnX3 (X = Cl, Br, I)High pressure experiments in a belt-type apparatus were performed on rare earth trichlorides, -bromides and -iodides. The results underline the importance of the PuBr3-type arrangement. The range of existence of this structure type is considerably increased under pressure. X-ray high temperature investigations at ambient pressure on the quenched high pressure phases show a marked correlation between the transformation pressures, which rise with smaller cations, and the temperatures at which the high pressure phases are reconverted to the thermodynamically stable ones.

Description / Table of Contents: Investigations of the Solid Solution in the System SrI2—BaI2 at Ambient Pressures and at 2.0 GPaThe P, T, x-diagram of the system SrI2—BaI2 has been investigated at ambient pressures and at 2.0 GPa. The amount of solid solution in the four structure types occuring in this system (SrI2- or PbCl2—ZrAs2-type with SrI2 and PbCl2- or anti-Fe2P-type with BaI2) differs considerably. Structural geometries belonging to the same PbCl2 structure family show marked differences in their toleration to cation substitution. Solid solution is especially pronounced in the BaI2-rich phases which incorporate up to 60 mol-% Sr2+ in the high pressure phase of BaI2.

Description / Table of Contents: Refinement of Crystal Structures of CaHCl, SrHCl, BaHCl, BaHBr, and BaHIThe structures of CaHCl, SrHCl, BaHCl, BaHBr and BaHI have been refined using single crystal data. The comparison of the parameters with the corresponding data of isotypic fluorohalide compounds gives a valuable insight into the bonding interactions in this structure type.
