    Notes: Experimental results are reported on the electrical properties of glass-laminated unsaturated polyester (UP) resins. Measurements of the poling current as a function of temperature reveal two different activated processes. Above 50°C the activation energy is 160 kJ/mol and has been associated with ionic condition, possibly by protons, while at lower temperatures (below -70°C) the activation energy is very low (less than 40 kJ/mol) and is associated with dipole relaxation. It is concluded that the laminated UP resin undergoes a phase transformation between low and high temperatures, which gives rise to a completely different electrical response. This phase transformation can be associated with the glass transition of UP resin phase. In view of the low activation energy, giving rise to a polarization peak, it is concluded that the low temperature range (glassy state) favors strictly localized motions of charges - most likely electrons. At higher temperatures, the behavior corresponds to d.c. conductivity and is associated with extended motions of charge carriers with limitations at contacts and at internal barriers. According to the air gap measurements, the pronounced dip found in the temperature dependence of the poling current (in the range from 20 to -30°C) may be due to separation of conduction and dipole relaxation current. Thermally stimulated depolarization (TSD) current measurements reveal the presence of high internal fields due to space charges accumulated at the phase boundaries of glass fibers.

    Notes: The kinetics of the reaction of carbon dioxide with mono- and diethanolamine in such nonaqueous solvents as methanol, ethanol, and 2-propanol and in water were studied using a stirred tank absorber with a plane gas-liquid interface at 303 K. The reaction was found to be of first order with respect to carbon dioxide for every solvent. The order of reaction with respect to ethanolamine was found to be unity only for an aqueous solution of monoethanolamine and for the other solutions, ranged from 1.4 to 2, depending on the solvent species. The reaction order was increased in the order of water, methanol, ethanol, and 2-propanol. The variation of the reaction order with the solvent species could be explained in terms of a reaction scheme via a zwitterion. Almost linear dependence of the logarithm of the reaction rate constant on the solubility parameter of the solvent was derived.

    Notes: The generalized relationships of Lee and Kesler for the thermodynamic properties of nonpolar fluids have been combined with an accurate equation of state for water which is utilized as the reference substance for polar fluids for reduced temperatures from 0.4 to 2.5 and reduced pressures to 10. The input data required are the critical temperature, critical pressure, acentric factor, and a polarity factor Y obtained from experimental pressure-volume-temperature data. Comparisons between calculated and experimental thermodynamic properties indicate that highly accurate results are obtained by the method of this study for most polar fluids. A modified procedure is presented for the compressibility factors of substances with large acentric factors such as alcohols. Tabulated values of the polar fluid correction terms are presented for the compressibility factor, fugacity coefficient, and enthalpy, entropy, and heat capacity departures for the complete range investigated.

    Notes: It is shown that the conventional Smith dead-time compensator can be modified in a fashion which leads to significant improvements in its regulatory capabilities for measurable disturbances or inputs. The proposed modification utilizes effectively the existing prediction capabilities of the conventional dead-time compensator and eliminates the need for a separate feedforward controller in many circumstances under which it is normally employed. The modified dead-time compensator possesses simultaneous feedforward and feedback actions. An additional tuning parameter which controls the degree of dead-time cancellation allows the designer to shape the response according to requirements. Illustrative examples show the advantages of the modified scheme.

    Notes: A systematic design procedure using a liquid circulation unit for gas-liquid systems containing low-viscosity liquids is developed. The procedure can be used to predict and optimize the fluid mechanics and mass transfer in gas-liquid contactors for a specified performance. Batch liquid mass transfer data obtained from a commercial-scale aeration basin (12.2 m × 12.2 m × 6.7 m; gas flow rate range, 0.0023-0.01 m3/s) are used to verify the model predictions and to test the design procedure.
