Notes: Turbulent heat transfer coefficients have been measured at the surface of single bubbles formed by injecting steam into a subcooled water stream at atmospheric pressure. Depending upon the steam flow rate (0.4 to 1.5 g./min), the water temperature (80° to 180°F.), and the water velocity (0.9 to 7.2 ft./sec.) the bubbles ranged from small, smooth, ellipsoidal bubbles, similar to those observed in highly subcooled nucleate boiling, to large, irregular bubbles which oscillated in size. The bubble frequencies were in the range 200 to 2,500 cycles/sec. and the surface heat transfer coefficients 13,000 to 320,000 B.t.u./(hr.) (sq. ft.) (°F.). Because of these exceptionally high heat transfer coefficients a significant fraction of the total heat flow in Gunther's subcooled boiling experiments is estimated to be attributable to latent heat transport.

Notes: Conditions for the incomplete displacement of gas from the valley between two parallel ridges by a liquid-drop front advancing over the ridges are calculated. The significant parameters are found to be the liquid density, surface tension, contact angle, and geometry of the ridges. The solution may be obtained analytically or, more conveniently, graphically. Surface roughnesses are divided into four classes, one of which can stably switch from liquid - to gas - fill, and another vice versa. This may account for some of the hysteresis effects reported in bubble nucleation. It is pointed out that surfaces consisting predominately of cavities are more likely to follow these considerations than grooved surfaces, owing to displacement of gas by advance of liquid along the grooves. An example important in boiling and cavitation theory is worked out, and qualitative agreement with the literature is shown.

Notes: A new mode of high-flux heat transfer is proposed, which consists of film boiling from a porous solid plate, the vapor being sucked off through the plate. For horizontal plates the average vapor film thickness is determined by Taylor instability of the vapor-liquid interface. A theory is presented for predicting the minimum vapor film thickness which takes into account the stabilizing influence of the reactive pressure of the vapor leaving the interface. The predicted heat transfer coefficients are five to ten times greater than observed heat transfer coefficients in film boiling from nonporous surfaces.

Notes: It is shown that existing methods for design of optimal regulators by the Wiener-Hopf procedure must be modified in order to be applicable to unstable and/or nonminimum phase plant or disturbance transfer functions, such as are frequently encountered in the chemical industry. Solutions are developed for three cases: I. stable, but possibly nonminimum phase, plant and disturbance transfer functions; II. minimum phase, but possibly unstable, plant with no restrictions on the disturbance transfer functions; and III. prestabilized, with a proper modification to retain the original control effort inequality constraints, but possibly nonminimum phase plant and disturbance transfer functions. Case III gives the general solution for regulation of linear, time-invariant, lumped-parameter systems. When prestabilization is not necessary, it reduces to case I. Where applicable, solutions by the method of case II frequently involve less algebra than in case III.

Notes: The necessary conditions for optimization of a system governed by a nonlinear vector first-order partial differential equation with two (space and time) independent variables, such as governs the unsteady behavior of tubular flow reactors, are derived. Rather general objective functionals and boundary conditions, such as the recycle of unconverted reactant with an appropriate time delay for separation and a free choice of final time, are allowed. A gradient technique in control space is formulated, and it is shown that distinct computational advantages can accrue from the use of the method of characteristics.

Notes: The optimal unsteady control of a jacketed tubular reactor with and without heat generation due to chemical reaction in response to a step disturbance in the feed stream concentration is computed. More rigorous control action was found to be necessary for the case with heat generation than without heat generation. Convergence of the method was also investigated with fixed and free final time.
