    Notes: In attempts to identify potential applications for refined commingled postconsumer plastics, a feedstock containing about 80% polyethylene (PE) and lesser amounts of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET), polystyrene (PS), polypropylene (PP), and poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) was modified through functionalization with maleic anhydride in a co-rotating intermeshing twin-screw extruder. The modified and unmodified blends were compounded with various fillers and reinforcements such as glass fibers, mica flakes, talc, and calcium carbonate. Injection molded composites based on the modified matrix had, in general, superior mechanical and thermal properties. These findings are discussed in view of the improved adhesion resulting from reactions and/or enhanced polar interactions at phase boundaries. Several compounds prepared in this work had overall property data comparable to, or approaching those, of equivalent commercial HDPE molding compounds that are commonly used in “durable” applications.

    Notes: Aspects of thermal, morphological, and rheological properties of biodegradable poly-D(-)(3-hydeoxybutyrate) (PHB) blended with poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) have been studied. Thermal properties and morphology of the blends were examined by scanning electron microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry, respectively. A rotational theometer with parallel plate geometry was also adopted to investigate the rheological properties of these blends. In addition, dynamic ciscoelasticity was measured by a Rheovibron as functions of time and temperature. From these measurements, PHB and PEO were observed to be miscible in the melt state. In the case of the blend systen 80/20 PHB/PEO by weight, the vacant domains of the PHB were filled with PEO particles, and this morphological state enhanced the rheological properties. Furthermore, PHB and its blends were found to have high crystallinities, but to have unstable thermal behavior about Tm.

    Notes: The influence of fillers like clay, silica, and carbon black on the rheological properties of 1,2 polybutadiene has been studied using a capillary rheometer. Silica filled compound exhibited the highest viscosity and clay filled compound the lowest viscosity at all shear rates. The effect of filler loading and temperature on the Theological behavior has also been studied. Smooth extrudates were obtained in most of the cases and die swell was lower for silica and carbon black filled compounds than for clay filled compounds. Rheograms of different 1,2 polybutadiene systems have been found to merge into a master curve using modified viscosity and shear rate functions that contain melt flow index as a parameter.

    Notes: The sorption and rate of permeation of scopolamine base in human skin have been measured as a function of drug concentration in aqueous solution contacting the stratum corneum surface of the skin. The sorption isotherm is nonlinear, and the apparent penetrant diffusivity computed from steady state permeation data is greater than that estimated from unsteady state (time lag) measurements.By assuming that sorption occurs by both ordinary dissolution and binding of penetrant to immobile sites in the membrane, the experimental sorption isotherm can be predicted, and the disparity between steady state and time lag diffusivities can be reconciled.

    Notes: The effect of the presence of dimethyl sulfoxide (in admixture with water) on the sorption and permeation rate of scopolamine base in human skin in vitro has been measured as a function of drug concentration in aqueous solution. The equilibrium sorption of scopolamine by skin from solution appears to be unaffected by the presence of even high concentrations of dimethyl sulfoxide in the solution phase. In the absence of a transdermal gradient of DMSO (or water), the permeability of skin to scopolamine in the presence of DMSO is about twofold higher than in its absence, suggesting that the diffusivity of scopolamine in the stratum corneum is somewhat elevated by the solvating action of DMSO.When, however, a gradient of DMSO concentration is impressed across the skin (irrespective of whether that gradient is of the same or opposite sign to that of the drug), the permeability of the skin to scopolamine is increased by one to two orders of magnitude. Microscopic examination of the skin subjected to such treatment reveals marked swelling, distortion, and intercellular delamination of the stratum corneum, which is only partially reversible following complete extraction with water. These effects are believed due to development of very high osmotic stresses produced within the stratum corneum, as both water and DMSO are transported into the tissue.

    Notes: Among the various marine plastic debris, abandoned or lost fishing gear is a major pollutant, adversely affecting marine life and disturbing the ecological equilibrium. In an attempt to find a technological solution to recycling of the plastic fishing gear, two routes are evaluated. The first is melt reprocessing. Here, compatibilized blends and composites are prepared using various polymers - HDPE, nylon 6 (N6), nylon 66 (N66), etc. - obtained from melt reprocessing of fishnets. This approach involves cleaning, size reduction, melt extrusion and filtering, modification, and injection molding. Mechanical properties of blends and composites thus made are compared with commercial materials. The second approach uses these nets as organic fibrous reinforcements in polymeric matrices. N6 and N66 fibers obtained from fishnets are compounded with a thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) matrix at temperatures below the melting point of nylons. Good adhesion between the fibers and the matrix is obtained because of the interaction between nylons and TPU. Addition of nylon fibers to the TPU matrix result in improved stiffness. Shore hardness, abrasion resistance, etc.

    Notes: A theoretical model is developed to predict the strain of the pipe, coupling, and adhesive under tensile loading of an adhesive bonded joint. The model is found to be within 10 percent of the experimental pipe and coupling strain. Based on the model, several failure modes and their locations are defined and related to the measured data. In this investigation, delamination is the dominating mode of failure. The delamination stress for each test sample is within 7 percent of the average theoretical delamination stress. In addition, the effect of the coupling length, coupling Young's modulus, adhesive shear modulus, and adhesive thickness on the delamination failure are investigated. The model shows that decreasing the modulus of the coupling improves the delamination failure load; however, the coupling strain at the middle of the joint is increased by this variation. Increasing the shear modulus of the adhesive provides the most significant improvement of the joint delamination failure load. Two geometric factors, the joint length and the adhesive thickness also affect the joint failure load. The joint delamination failure load can only be significantly improved by increasing the bonding length up to a certain limit. Increasing the adhesive thickness increases the delamination failure load, however, a large gap between the pipe and coupling may contribute to misalignment during installation which may result in imposed moments under tensile loading. This study can supply the manufacturers with the appropriate design parameters to improve the joint performance significantly under tensile loading.
