Notes: The effect of elemental sulfur (S8) and tetramethyl thiuram disulfide (TMTD) on the chemical crosslinking of PVC is studied. The tensile strength, elongation at break, and gel content of crosslinked and uncrosslinked PVC molded samples, cured at different times in hot air, are evaluated. It was found that crosslinking PVC with TMTD improves its mechanical properties, and adding S8 produces a slight improvement. Also, the S8 presence accelerated the PVC/TMTD crosslinking reaction when the crosslinking reaction was carried out under shear forces, but not when the curing was done in hot air, where the S8 retards the process.

Notes: Void fractions (fraction of the flow cross-sectional area occupied by the gas phase) have been measured for steam-water flows in an adiabatic, horizontal test section of 0.484 in. I.D. at 400, 600, 800, and 1,000 1b./sq. in. gauge. A comprehensive survey of void data for two-phase concurrent flow is included in the paper, and the data, including the Martinelli and homogeneous flow model predictions, are compared. System characteristics, involving one- and two-component flows in horizontal and vertical test sections with and without heat transfer over a range of flow ratios, total flow rates, and pressure, are too complex, and the data available are neither extensive nor precise enough to warrant the generation of over-all correlations. Use of the void data in correlating two-phase frictional pressure drops is discussed. A model has been presented for the prediction of critical flows based upon the void data, and calculations have been made for steam-water critical flows over a range of critical pressures from 15 to 2,000 1b./sq. in. abs.

Notes: In predicting interfacial area in liquid-liquid systems there are several published reports which give different results. Differences in methods of measurement of interfacial area and impeller design and location account for some of these discrepancies. For one pair of liquids, 40 parts by volume of ethylhexanol and 60 parts water, it was found that over wide ranges of impeller size to tank size ratio (0.27 to 0.67) that equal power per unit volume gave equal interfacial area per unit volume.

Notes: The study of mixed films has become of considerable interest both from theoretical and practical points of view. The π-A isotherms of monostearin-distearin (about 50% 1,3- and 50% 1,2-isomers) mixed films spread on water as a function of emulsifier ratio and temperature were studied in an automated Langmuir-type film balance. When molecules of both emulsifiers are spread on the air-water interface they are packed more closely together than when either emulsifier is present alone, and they enter into some form of association. This association can be demonstrated by surface pressure-area isotherms and by thermodynamic studies. The characteristics of the mixed films, their elasticity and miscibility, which are of interest in emulsion or foam stability are discussed. A molecular model established can explain the interactions between film and subphase molecules and their relationships with variables of the process (pressure and temperature). This model fits the calculated thermodynamic parameters.

Notes: A parallel plate rheometer has been devised which permits measurements of shear stresses of 102 to 105 dynes/sq.cm. and shear rates of 10-5 to 1 sec.-1. A linear, air lubricated bearing is used to align the apparatus, and a linear variable differential transformer is used to sense changes in position. With a sample of polyisobutylene and with several samples of poly(dimethyl siloxane), it has been established that a Hookean range exists for each sample at low stresses. Hooke's law in shear states that the modulus is independent of stress, where the modulus is defined as the ratio of the shear stress in steady, creeping flow to the strain which can be recovered after the stress is removed. Other conclusions supported by the present work are that the Hookean range does not extend to stresses which are high enough to cause non-Newtonian flow, that the modulus decreases with increasing molecular weight although not in direct proportion, and that a sample with a broad molecular weight distribution has a lower modulus than one with a narrow distribution.
