Notizen: Three kinetic rate constants and an initial enzyme concentration are estimated in Britton Chance's classical peroxidase model by applying both the Picard iteration-orthogonal polynomial and stationary state methods to his transient experimental data. Since this model does not describe the hysteresis exhibited by the data, more complex models are examined in order to account for this behavior. From a study of this hysteresis phenomena which is inherent to the structure of consecutive reactions, it is found that in addition to discriminating between mechanisms much useful information about the history of enzyme induction can be observed from the direction, shape, and area of the hysteresis loop.

Notizen: A Henry's constant correlation is developed from a macroscopic Corresponding states theory for fluid mixtures. The method requires three interaction parameters which are correlated for mixtures of paraffin with nitrogen, carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, or another paraffin. Henry's constants can be calculated by this method to within experimental accuracy (about ± 5%) for the mixtures tested.

Notizen: The design of vapor recovery processes requires very accurate vapor-liquid equilibria data. In this work the problem is attacked from both an experimental and a correlational viewpoint, and the methane-n-hexane system is chosen for study. A predictive model for vapor-liquid equilibrium aids in the interpretation of the experimental measurements, and data acquired in this study agree closely with the theoretical predictions. Maximum deviation between calculated and experimental equilibrium ratios (yi/xi) is 8.5% with average absolute deviations of 3% for n-hexane and 0.1% for methane. Several procedures are described for checking the accuracy of experimental VLE data when a heavy vapor is present at low concentrations in the gas phase. Several potential sources of experimental error are also identified and discussed.

Notizen: Measurements of the diffusion coefficients of hydrogen and methane in strong aqueous electrolytes have been made with the use of the diaphragm cell method. The variation of the diffusion coefficients with electrolyte concentration, type of ion, and temperature has been studied over the electrolyte concentration range zero to saturated, and for temperatures in the range 25° to 65°C.The results have been interpreted with the Eyring rate theory. The presence of ions in water increases the activation energy for diffusion which results in a decrease in the diffusion coefficient. The increase in activation energy is represented by terms that are additive for the ions involved. The influence of ions on the diffusion coefficient increases rapidly with ionic charge, but seems to be little affected by temperature or solute for the systems studied.

Notizen: A method is presented by which a particular class of interacting linear multivariable systems may be decoupled into independent, first-order subsystems containing a single output as a function of a single manipulatable input and a single measurable input. This is accomplished by application of compensators in the form of feedforward amplifiers and proportional plus derivative feedback controllers. Simultaneous application of a stabilizing feedback controller and a feedforward amplifier to each decoupled subsystem results in perfect control of system outputs yi (t), that is, yi (t) = 0 for all t ≧ 0. In addition, the compensating device contains degrees of freedom that make it possible to set output forms within any limits desired in the case that subsystem feedforward controllers operate imperfectly, and obtain better fit between the linear system model, which forms the basis for controller design, and the corresponding nonlinear system model.

Notizen: With the development of relatively inexpensive control computers and on-stream analyzers, on-line dynamic optimization of nonlinear, multistage systems has become more feasible. Investigators have been concerned with the static optimization and control of single-stage and multistage systems, but few have considered the optimization of a multistage system whose behavior is nonstatic owing to stochastic changes in its input and environment, and whose optimal control policy is time varying. This paper looks at the problem of dynamic optimization as it applies to the analysis of a multistage continuous stirred-tank reactor system. A variational approach, in which the physical restraints on the manipulatable variables are included by a parametric representation, led to a bang-bang, sampled-data, optimal control law, or an equivalent analytical expression for continuous optimal control. Inclusion of the inequality relationships, specifying amplitude constraints on the manipulatable variables by a penalty function, resulted in a set of nonlinear Euler-Lagrange equations specifying the control law.
