Notes: In this work dispersive mixing and chemical reactions are treated simultaneously by resorting to the theory of stochastic processes. A fluidized-bed reactor is modeled by discretizing it into ideally stirred tanks of various sizes corresponding to bubble, cloud, and emulsion phases. All parameters in the model are correlated with known or experimentally obtainable quantities. Examples using a complex chemical reaction are given to demonstrate the applicability of the approach.

Notes: Pressure drop and liquid saturation accompanying two-phase concurrent flow have been studied in a variety of packings and with gas-liquid systems having a wide range of fluid properties. Two basic flow patterns were observed with nonfoaming systems. Correlations of pressuredrop and liquid-saturation data were obtained in terms of the single-phase friction losses for the liquid and the gas when each flows alone in the bed. Deviations from the correlation with foaming systems are discussed and illustrated with sample data.

Notes: Catalytic decomposition of nitric oxide at a concentration of 0.404 and 0.432% by volume in nitrogen was studied in a tubular flow reactor. The packing consisted of alumina pellets impregnated with 0.1% by weight of platinum oxide and 3.0% by weight of nickel oxide. Tests were conducted at pressures of 1 to 15 atm. and temperatures from 800° to 1,000°F. A rate equation correlating the data as a function of temperature, pressure, and compositions was developed. A reaction mechanism compatible with the rate equation is proposed.

Notes: A method is proposed and developed for predicting velocity profiles in smooth, concentric annuli at high Reynolds numbers from the profiles in equivalent tubes. Experimental data for the flow of water in two annuli with diameter ratios of 14.8 and 38.2 at Reynolds numbers up to 226,000 strongly support the predictions. Published data show the method to be successful over a very wide range of diameter ratios.

Notes: The differential equations governing the propagation in time of the sensitivity matrix for a mathematical model given by a system of ordinary differential equations are derived. These equations are used to perform a statistical sensitivity analysis of models for chemical reactors. The behavior of the sensitivities at equilibrium is analyzed. It is shown that the sensitivity equations for linear kinetics may be solved using an analytic representation. The numerical solution of these equations is discussed, and illustrative examples are presented. The lognormal distribution is presented as being representative of errors in rate constants.

Notes: Previous attempts to model the effect of deposition on removal efficiency in deep-bed filtration have relied heavily on the determination of empirical parameters even for monosized suspensions. A newly developed mathematical model not only significantly reduces this reliance, but takes full account of the polydispersity of suspensions. The results of eight runs on an experimental filter are compraed with the predictions of the mathematical model. Qualitative agreement is good; quantitative agreement is fair.

Notes: The rates of nitration of benzene by nitric acid in mixed acid to produce mononitrobenzene have been measured in well-emulsified reaction mixtures in the temperature range from 34° to 54°C. The acid-phase compositions ranged from 1.6 mole % nitric acid and 27 mole % sulfuric acid to 35 mole % nitric acid and zero % sulfuric acid; the organicphase composition ranged from 4 to 95 mole % benzene, and the relative extent of the acid and organic phases was varied from 25 to 80 volume % acid phase. The reaction rate based on the total volume of the reacting mixture is shown to be a function of the phase compositions, temperature, and volume % of acid phase.

Notes: Frequencies and amplitudes of oscillations for nineteen pure systems were measured photographically. The period of oscillation was longer than that predicted by Lamb. The discrepancy was not due to wall effects, viscosity, or velocity of fall but to amplitude of oscillation. Modification of previous expressions included an amplitude function which could be experimental or empirical. Oscillations began near the peak velocity, and a vortex trail was necessary for them to take place. Oblate-prolate oscillations did not cause drop breakup, as all systems ceased to oscillate and wobbled randomly below maximum drop size. Oscillations do not decay with time.
