Notes: A semiempirical expression for the Helmholtz energy of mixed electrolyte solutions in solvents mixtures is obtained from the solution of the mean spherical approximation given by Planche and Renon (1981) for a nonprimitive model of interactions. A consistent set of analytical equations for the related thermodynamic properties was further derived and used to represent osmotic coefficient data of strong aqueous electrolytes at 25°C. Data correlation was performed on more than 80 systems up to a 6 M molality using generally one adjustable parameter for each single electrolyte; from these parameters the properties of mixtures can be calculated in a predictive manner without additional parameters.

Notes: A new method to reduce vapor-liquid equilibrium data of binary mixtures and to evaluate a thermodynamic model is presented. It is based on the principle of maximum likelihood. Deviations between all measured and predicted quantities are calculated and confidence limits in model parameters are evaluated from the given estimates of experimental errors. Many examples illustrate the practical applications of the method.

Notes: The study of the coalescence of secondary dispersions passing through a granular packing has led to the consideration of drop formation from a hydrocarbon film around a single sphere placed in the flux of an aqueous phase. An analogue mock-up study led to a mathematical model for relating the diameter of the drop to various parameters participating in the phenomenon. A relationship enabling reasonably accurate calculation of the diameter of a drop formed by means of such a sphere placed in a stationary or mobile aqueous phase for a wide range of Reynolds numbers and Bond numbers is proposed.

Notes: A system of equations based on the ionic atmosphere theory of Debye and Huckel, Born model contribution, and local compositions of the nonrandom two-liquid (NRTL) model is developed to represent isothermal activity coefficients, in the whole range of concentrations, for solutions in an undissociated solvent of a partially or completely dissociated electrolyte. The physical constants and the four adjustable parameters necessary to represent the osmotic coefficient, for fifteen strong aqueous electrolytic solutions, are given at 298.15°K and atmospheric pressure. Vapor-liquid equilibrium, for the hydrochloric acid-water system at 298.15°K, is represented for acid compositions ranging from infinite dilution to 18 M using a known dissociation constant and six parameters.

Notes: The mass transfer of hydrocarbons within an emulsion drop has been modeled. The selective behavior of the process is attributed to the controlling effect of the aqueous phase; calculations show that the presence of a very thin membrane of water separating the inner core of the hydrocarbon droplets from the surrounding solvent is sufficient to explain observed selectivities.

Notes: A critical discussion is given of the use of local compositions for representation of excess Gibbs energies of liquid mixtures. A new equation is derived, based on Scott's two-liquid model and on an assumption of nonrandomness similar to that used by Wilson. For the same activity coefficients at infinite dilution, the Gibbs energy of mixing is calculated with the new equation as well as the equations of van Laar, Wilson, and Heil; these four equations give similar results for mixtures of moderate nonideality but they differ appreciably for strongly nonideal systems, especially for those with limited miscibility. The new equation contains a nonrandomness parameter α12 which makes it applicable to a large variety of mixtures. By proper selection of α12, the new equation gives an excellent representation of many types of liquid mixtures while other local composition equations appear to be limited to specific types. Consideration is given to prediction of ternary vapor-liquid and ternary liquid-liquid equilibria based on binary data alone.

Notes: Tests have been made for use of a high-density polyethylene of ultra-high molecular weight as a gear material. The gears had a diametral pitch of 10 and 30 teeth. They were tested in mesh with a steel gear of the same size in two operating conditions: (1) in still air without lubrication, and (2) in oil with generous lubrication. The effects of speed, temperature, and initial lubrication on the load capacity of the gears were tested and an equation was developed to express the limits of these gears operating without lubrication. In the lubricated conditions, the influence of oil flow and its temperature on the gear teeth temperature were evaluated. The wear of the plastic gear was measured in both operating conditions and wear rate was calculated as a function of the load and gear life. Curves are presented suggesting design limits of the gears in the two operating conditions. There are also recommendations on the center distance setting and the backlash to use.
