Notes: With the relatively recent trend toward adaptive process control during processing of structural composites, there is need for an understanding of the nature of variations during cure that are encountered. Part-to-part variations can arise because of differences in thermal exposure arising from part placement or part thickness, or from chemical differences due to formulation or advancement. Microdielectric sensors are particularly well suited for monitoring thermoset cures from initial point of flow, through the liquid region, and on into the solid state. In this study, microdielectric sensors are used to systematically study the influence of resin advancement on cure behavior. Relationships between advancement and critical cure phenomena such as flow temperature, point of viscosity minimum, and reaction end point are discussed.

Notes: Recent work has shown that moisture diffusion coefficients can be measured in thin polymer films through monitoring changes in permittivity with microdielectric sensors. The sensor is constructed in silicon and consists of an interdigitated electrode and two depletion mode field effect transistors. When operated in conjunction with appropriate external circuitry, the sensor measures dielectric constant and loss factor of any material placed on the SiO2 insulator and aluminum electrodes. The dielectric properties are measured locally within the first 10 microns of the film in contact with the sensor. As a thin polymer film on the sensor is exposed to a high relative humidity, the dynamically measured dielectric constant can be used to determine exactly when the moisture arrives at the polymer-SiO2 interface and the rate at which the concentration increases. The magnitude of the change in permittivity after equilibration has also been related to total amount of moisture uptake. In this investigation, several epoxy/amine films of varying mix ratios and cure state are cured on microdielectric sensors. The films, approximately 100 microns thick, are alternately exposed to wet and dry environments. Diffusion coefficients for both absorption and desorption are determined from the dielectric data as a function of cure state and epoxy/amine mix ratio. In addition, relative changes in amount of moisture uptake after equilibration is monitored.

Notes: A study was made of the mutual solubility of ethylene with various polar and nonpolar relatively high-molecular-weight organic compounds at temperatures 1° and 10° C. respectively above the critical temperature of ethylene and at pressures up to 1,500 Ib./sq.in.abs. For many compounds Henry's law was found to be applicable for the liquid phase up to approximately two thirds of the critical pressure of ethylene. In the critical region the solubility of ethylene was extremely sensitive to small changes in both temperature and pressure. The various types of phase behavior encountered were classified according to the nonideality involved. The results of this investigation indicate that a gas near its critical conditions is often capable of dissolving relatively nonvolatile materials in sufficient concentrations to warrant consideration of a separation process using such a gas as the extracting medium, namely fluid-liquid extraction.

Notes: A limited number of measurements were made of the heat transfer coefficient from an electrically heated rod to water flowing in an annulus. Tests were performed at Reynolds numbers ranging from 5,000 to 22,000 (based on equivalent diameter), water temperatures of 70° and 125°F., and relatively high heat fluxes of 52,000 to 208,000 B.t.u./(hr.) (sq. ft.). The annulus dimensions were 0.625 in. I.D. and 0.840 in. O.D. The coefficients varied as the 0.8 power of the velocity; they were 20% higher than predicted by use of Colburn's equation for flow inside pipes with the equivalent diameter. Over the range of conditions studied, it was found that the thermal boundary layer was fully developed in 1 1/8 in. (Lh/De=5).

Notes: Equilibrium data are presented for the exchange of Fe+++ and H+ on a sulfonated polystyrene exchanger. The data cover solution concentrations from 0.05 N to 2 N in total cation for solutions having either nitrate or perchlorate ion as the common anion. The nitrate system shows irregular behavior because of complex ion formation, but for composition where such behavior is absent the equilibrium data can be correlated by equations based on the law of mass action. Equilibrium compositions for the perchlorate system can be correlated over the entire range studied by a single equation based on the law of mass action. Methods based on the law of mass action are presented for correlating or predicting equilibrium compositions for both systems.

Notes: An investigation has been made of transient heat transfer and water removal on an unfelted cylinder dryer. This investigation has included the development of a theory for describing conduction of heat in the drying material and an experimental testing of the adequacy of the theory. The theory describes the heat transfer and evaporation of water in terms of a second-order partial-differential equation and appropriate boundary conditions. Numerical solutions obtained on a digital computer are presented. The experimental work, performed on a specially constructed laboratory dryer, included measurements of temperatures at internal points in a drying sheet and also measurements of water removed during drying.Good agreement was found between theory and experiment, and the usefulness of the theory is demonstrated in the analysis of water removal in some drying experiments.Although the work was primarily concerned with a description of the paper drying process, the methods should apply equally well to the drying of other materials on heated cylinders.

Notes: Heat transfer was measured for water flowing parallel to 5/8-in. rods in a triangular lattice (0.914-in. spacing). Velocity was varied from 5 to 20 ft./sec., temperature from 150° to 325°F., and heat flux from 50,000 to 200,000 B.t.u./(hr.)(sq. ft.). Reynolds numbers ranged from 70,000 to 700,000. Coefficients were 40% higher than predicted from the Colburn equation for flow in pipes by use of the equivalent diameter. The effect of heated length was studied. No variation in local coefficient around the rod periphery was found. Pressure drops were 65% higher than predicted by the Fanning equation (by use of De).
