Notizen: The morphologies of thin, substrate-free block copolymer films have been examined by cross-sectional TEM. Two poly(styrene-b-butadiene) diblock copolymers were studied: one that forms PS cylinders and the other that forms PB cylinders in the bulk. Films were annealed while supported by metal TEM grids, embedded, and ultramicrotomed in crosssection. We find that at the metal support the film forms a meniscus-like region, or Plateau border, which exhibits the bulk morphology. Away from the border, the film thickness decreases and regions of terraced in-plane cylinder domains occur until a minimum thickness is reached. The minimum thickness region of the PB majority copolymer in cross-section shows a PS interlayer penetrated by a hexagonal array of circular PB channels that connect upper and lower PB surface layers, and a total thickness of 25-27 nm. The minimum thickness region of the PS majority copolymer in plan view shows no image contrast, but in cross-section reveals a continuous PS interlayer covered by layers of PB, and a total thickness of 20 nm. Comparisons with the chain dimensions suggest a bilayer arrangement for both morphologies with strongly perturbed chain conformations in the surface layers. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notizen: A quantitative analysis of the deformation of thin spherulitic polyethylene films was undertaken at the microscopic level with the aid of a gold marking technique. The deformation microstructure which developed was further characterized through the use of a gold decoration technique. The microfibrillar morphology was found to agree quite well with Peterlin's model of the microfibril. Changes in the sample morphology as delineated by the gold decoration, support the proposed mechanisms of the transformation of the folded chain spherulitic morphology into the microfibriliar morphology and the subsequent deformation of the microfibrillai structure.

Notizen: The structure formed in the coagulation stage of the spinning process of poly(p-phenylene benzobisthiazole) fiber is studied by electron microscopy. An oriented network of microfibrils with typical fibril diameters of about 80-100Å is observed. We suggest that these microfibrils are the fundamental structural elements of the fiber. Thus, knowledge of the mechanism by which this initial structure is formed may allow for better control of final fiber properties. The relation of structure formation during coagulation to the phase diagram of a rigid polymer solution and to the kinetic mechanism of the phase transition is discussed.

Notizen: The diversities existing among published kinetic studies on activated anionic polymerization of ε-caprolactam are closely examined. A kinetic model derived from a regular, linear reversible reaction mechanism is employed to explain the experimentally observed autocatalytic character of the polymerization system and to examine the dependence of the apparent activation energy on the experimental method. Several existing kinetic models tested with our experimental data show that the autocatalytic type rate equation best describes the polymerization process.

Notizen: In this study we investigate the effect of crystallization rate on the extensibility (draw ratio) of spherulitic polyethylene film uniaxially deformed at room temperature. Draw ratios for deformed films increased with increasing crystallization temperature. Transmission electron microscopy of the microfibrillar structures revealed and interconnected network of fibrils. The degree of connectivity between microfibrils was found to decrease with increasing-crystallization temperature. A model of the deformation process is developed in which inter- and intra-link (extended chain fibers formed during crystallization) distribute the applied stress, initiate the micronecking process and influence the amount of chain unfolding during drawing.
