    Notes: From studies of turbulence in round jets of Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids, it has been found that the response of wedge shaped, hot-film probes can be influenced by the structure of the flow. In water and in weakly viscoelastic fluids the probe is little affected by turbulence, but for more highly viscoelastic fluids the rate of heat transfer from the hot film is markedly increased. Increases as great as 37% were found in this work; this corresponds to a 250% increase in apparent velocity. For this reason, care must be taken in interpreting measurements obtained with hot-film wedges (and probably cylinders and cones also) in flows with both laminar and turbulent regimes.

    Notes: This paper extends the use of hot-wire and hot-film anemometry to the measurement of velocities in gas mixtures. It is demonstrated that the velocity data in binary gas mixtures can be satisfactorily predicted by calibration tests in pure systems alone or at any two convenient composition conditions. Furthermore, the actual transport properties of a fluid mixture may be inferred from direct calibrations of hot-wire, or hot-film anemometers in the mixture with known compositions.

    Notes: A novel experimental setup allowed both the kinetics of the thermal cracking of ethane and of the coke formation to be studied over a temperature range extending from 750 to 870°C. The overall kinetics of ethane disappearance are in excellent agreement with previously reported pilot results. Coking rates are initially high but rapidly decrease to reach an asymptotic value. The initial product distribution also differs from the asymptotic product distribution. A kinetic model for the coking is derived from the experiments and used in conjunction with a set of conservation equations for the simulation of industrial ethane cracking. The predicted run length, thickness of the coke layer and evolution of the tubeskin temperatures are in agreement with industrial observations.

    Notes: Currently available group-contribution methods for Tc, Pc, and Vc were evaluated using the Ambrose (1980) critical property data compilation. The Ambrose estimation methods were found to be the most accurate. Linear regression methods were also employed to develop alternate estimation methods which were found to have an accuracy comparable to those of Ambrose.

    Notes: Supercritical fluid extraction (SCFE) for the removal of organic toxins from water has been studied using a continuous-flow view cell system. Distribution coefficients (ratio of mole fraction of contaminant in supercritical CO2 to mole fraction in the aqueous phase at equilibrium) have been determined for a homologous series of contaminants as individual components in pure water: benzene, phenol, p-chlorophenol, and m-cresol. Data were obtained at two temperatures (313 and 323 K) and over a pressure range of 9.65 to 17.23 MPa for each contaminant. The distribution coefficients of the contaminants follow a pattern that can be explained in terms of molecular interactions both with water in the aqueous phase (as quantified by the pure contaminant solubility in water) and with CO2 in the SCF phase (as quantified by the pure contaminant solubility in near-critical CO2 and crossover phenomena in SCF CO2). These results have been accurately modeled using a hardsphere, perturbation-theory-based Carnahan-Starling-DeSantis-Redlich-Kwong equation of state and simple van der Waals mixing rules.

    Notes: The buildup of undesirable sulfur compounds(sulfates and thiosulfates) reduces the scrubbing effectiveness of the LO-CAT I autocirculation sulfur recovery process from acid-gas stream. Among various processes, withdrawing and disposing of a portion of the scrubber solution and replacing this “blowdown” with fresh solution have been the practice in the industry. The application of the electrodialysis system to recycle the blowdown is presented. Experiments were carried out using electrodialysis to separate salts (sulfates and thiosulfates) from the LO-CAT I autocirculation scrubber solution containing organic chelating agents, iron, and various alkali-metal inorganic salts. The results indicated that the electrodialysis was successful in removing 50% of the salts from the scrubber solution with less than 8% loss of organic and 8% loss of carbonates. The fluxes of the undesired salt species were high even at low current densities (200 to 400 A/m2).

    Notes: The theory of nonlinear oscillations should provide a useful tool for studying both forced and self-generated oscillations in continuous crystallizers. The application of the theory is described in this paper for the case of self-generated oscillations in a MSMPR (mixed-suspension, mixed product removal) isothermal crystallizer. Although the process parameters do not correspond to typical industrial conditions, the results indicate that for the Class I system studied higher yields sometimes can be obtained from the periodic process than the steady state design. Thus, there may be some situations where oscillatory operation is advantageous.
