Notes: Blends from poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) and epoxidized natural rubber (ENR) were prepared in a Brabender plasticorder by the melt blending technique. The melt flow behavior of these blends with respect to blend ratio and temperature has been examined using a melt flow indexer and capillary rheometer. ENR decreases the Brabender torque, increases the melt flow index (MFI), and decreases the melt viscosity of PVC in the blends. Arrhenius plots were used to study the effect of temperature on melt flow index (MFI) and viscosity. Moreover, the flow behavior index (n′) obtained from capillary rheometer data was found to be dependent on temperature and blend ratio.

Notes: The local bubble frequency, the local phase holdups and the local bed porosity in three-phase fluidized beds were measured. Air, water, and 250 μm glass beads were used as the gas, liquid, and solid phases. The effects of gas and liquid velocities on phase holdups were studied. Time-averaged local gas holdup and bubble frequency were measured by an optical fiber probe. Mass balances were performed at various axial positions along the fluidized beds to check the accuracy of the measurements.

Notes: A systematic study of potassium chloride crystallization shows that constant tip speed, TIPS, is the agitation criterion for scale-up. Three hydrodynamic regions are identified by a group MT TIPS3. Thus, a new generalized kinetic equation is proposed: B° = KGi(MT TIPS)j.The values of the power index j are 0.7 and 1.2 for low and high ranges of MT TIPS3, respectively. At even higher MT TIPS3, j scatters due to the breakage of crystals. The power index i is independent of hydrodynamic conditions and depends only on the crystallization temperature, e.g., it is 2.8 at 313.2 K.

Notes: To obtain good representation in the liquid-liquid critical region, a semitheoretical correction is added to a conventional expression (e.g., van Laar or NRTL) for the excess Gibbs energy of a binary or ternary system along the coexistence curve. This correction is an exponential function of a suitable distance from the critical point; it is significant in the critical region but not elsewhere. In the correction function, the preexponential factor is determined from stability considerations. In the exponential argument, two parameters are determined from theoretical power laws. While the coordinates of the critical point must be known (or estimated), no phase-equilibrium data in the critical region are required to determine parameters. The correction presented here provides an excellent approximation for phase equilibria along the coexistence curve close to and remote from critical conditions. Further, the correction facilitates simultaneous representation of isothermal vapor-liquid and liquid-liquid equilibria including the liquid-liquid critical region.

Notes: Free convection between two vertical coaxial cylinders was studied by solving the governing transport equations as an initial-value problem. The coupled, nonlinear, partial differential equations were converted into a set of difference equations by use of an alternating-direction implicit finite-difference numerical scheme. Twenty-four different combinations of Prandtl and Grashof numbers, and height to annular spacing ratios were used to characterize the problem. The results are presented primarily in the form of contour maps for the steady-state isotherms and streamlines. For Rayleigh numbers greater than 5 × 103, a fully developed boundary-layer flow was found to exist in the cavity. The interior region of the annulus was found to be thermally stratified and to possess a nearly uniform vertical temperature gradient, with a unicellular flow pattern being generated. With Rayleigh numbers of 5 × 104 and greater, it was found that the flow patterns could not be properly described with a grid spacing of 1/10. The variation of the steady-state mean Nusselt number with Prandtl and Rayleigh numbers and with geometric ratios was also investigated.

Notes: The gravity-driven coalescence of 1- to 2-cm. diameter air bubbles in glycerine and in water has been studied by high-speed cinematography. The resulting coalescence behavior can be correlated by a simple model which assumes that each bubble trails a wake, and that the bubble coalescing from below accelerates when it enters the wake of the preceding bubble and thus overtakes the first bubble. The predictions of the model are not significantly altered by different assumed wake configurations.

Notes: A new generalized algorithm has been developed for solving simultaneous chemical and phase equilibrium equations of two-phase systems. By rearranging convergence loops of the algorithm of Sanderson and Chien (1973), this new approach shows improved robustness and speed. Solutions to the material balance and chemical equilibrium equations are obtained with an improved Marquardt method (Zhan, 1976). An esterification reaction and dissociation reactions of electrolytes in phase equilibrium are presented as examples.
