Beschreibung: The possible ecological effects of suspended sediments are manifold. Briefly, suspended sediments may cause an increased surface for microorganism growth, fewer temperature fluctuations, chemical adsorption orabsorption, blanketing, mechanical-abrasive actions, and light penetration reduction (Cairns, 1968). Sherk and Cronin (1970) have pointed out that the above effects have been little studied in the estuarine environment. The ecological effects of suspended sediments on fish eggs and larvae may be of prime importance t o the C and D Canal area, an important spawning and primary nursery area for a variety of estuary: e species (Johnson,1972). This section discusses the effects of suspended sediment on the eggs and larvae of striped bass and white perch.

Beschreibung: Shear stress, generated by water movement, can kill fish eggs and larvae by causing rotation or deformation. Through the use of an experimental apparatus, a series of shear(as dynes/cm2)-mortality equations for fixed time exposures were generated for striped bass and white perch eggs and larvae. Exposure of striped bass eggs to a shear level of 350 dynes/cm2 kills 36% of the eggs in 1 min; 69% in 2 min, and 88% in 4 min; exposure of larvae to 350 dynes/cm2 kills 9.3% in 1 min, 30.0% in 2 min, and 68.1% in 4 min. A shear level of 350 dynes/cm2 kills 38% of the white perch eggs in 1 min, 41% in 2 min, 89% in 5 min, 96% in 10 min, and 98% in 20 min. A shear level of 350 dynes/cm2 applied to white perch larvae destroys 38% of the larvae in 1 min, 52% in 2 min, and 75% in 4 min. Results are experimentally used in conjunction with the determination of shear levels in the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal and ship movement for the estimation of fish egg and larval mortalities in the field.

Notizen: Actin-binding protein (ABP) is a well-characterized polypeptide capable of crosslinking filamentous actin. To date, this polypeptide has been shown to exist in a number of tissues and cultured cell lines. This report shows that by using a panel of three monoclonal antibodies for immunoblotting and immunofluorescence analysis, that ABP is present in bovine erythrocytes. Moreover, the data obtained suggest that this protein is a component of the erythrocyte membrane skeleton. Additionally, bovine erythrocyte ABP is shown to possess both an apparent molecular weight and an isoelectric point identical to that of bovine smooth muscle filamin, implying that these two polypeptides are identical. © 1993 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

Notizen: The problem of axisymmetric shells submerged in an infinite fluid subjected to an arbitrary loading is usually solved by reducing the system to a set of two-dimensional problems. This is accomplished by using Fourier series, thereby uncoupling the circumferential harmonics of the axisymmetric system. Thus, a computationally expensive three-dimensional solution is replaced by a computationally efficient set of two-dimensional solutions without any loss of accuracy. However, with the addition of arbitrary three-dimensional subsystems internal to the submerged axisymmetric shell, the circumferential harmonics become coupled. In this case, the computational advantage attributable to the circumferential Fourier decomposition compared to a fully three-dimensional solution is greatly reduced. This paper introduces a novel method to solve such three-dimensional systems while keeping the circumferential harmonics of the axisymmetric shell uncoupled. This is accomplished by relating the admittance matrix of the three-dimensional substructure, expressed in terms of its connection degrees of freedom, and the response of the empty system to solve for the interaction forces between the axisymmetric shell and the internal system. Using these interaction forces, the response of the full system can be obtained, Thus, the efficiency of the two-dimensional solution is maintained while solving an arbitrary three-dimensional problem. Sample problems illustrating the performance of this approach will be solved.

Notizen: A 1H dynamic NMR study of the hindered rotation in 5-amino-6-(N-methylformamido)-as-triazin-3(2H)-one was conducted. Signals for two rotamers were observed and their proton chemical shifts were assigned. It was found that the rotamer in which the as-triazine ring is cis to the formyl hydrogen predominates. The free energies of activation for hindered rotations about the N —CHO and C —NH2 bonds were determined by 1H NMR line-shape analysis.

Notizen: PDIDENT is a collection of interactive computer programs which have been developed as aids for qualitative phase analysis of x-ray powder diffraction data. These FORTRAN IV programs are implemented on a DEC committee on Powder Diffraction Standards (JCPDS) data base is accessed by the programs along with user-created data. The data base (sets 1-32) along with all cross-index files requires 9 Mbytes of storage. The packing of the data base, use of cross-index files and the algorithms and utility of the PDIDENT programs are described.
