Notes: In cases where high efficiency is required to resolve complex mixtures of either thermally labile or nonvolatile organic compounds, capillary supercritical fluid chromatography may be the most desirable analytical method. While great strides in this new technology have been made over the last few years, several problem areas are requiring increased attention. These include sample introduction systems, pressure reduction at the end of the column, column stability in various supercritical mobile phases, and migration of polar solute molecules. This paper describes the state-of-the-art in capillary SFC with emphasis on the progress made and future needs in the solutions to these specific problems.

Notes: Mesomorphic biphenylcarboxylate esters were coupled via flexible aliphatic hydrocarbon spacers to a polysiloxane backbone. The influence of spacer length, percent mesomorphic substitution, and crosslinking of the stationary phase on liquid-crystalline transition temperatures and on chromatographic performance was investigated. Unique selectivity and good efficiency over a wide temperature range for gum and cross-linked liquid-crystalline phases were demonstrated by the separation of various isomeric polycyclic aromatic compounds.

Notes: The film of stationary phase on the wall of a capillary column and that of the phase solution during both static and dynamic coating is subject to Rayleigh instability, which is quite independent of so-called wettability. A theory is developed which shows that the logarithmic growth rate of Rayleigh instabilities is proportional to the surface tension and to the third power of the film thickness, and inversely to the viscosity and to the fourth power of the capillary diameter. Determination of the variation of the viscosities of stationary phase solutions with concentration in coating solvents, and the variation of the viscosities of neat stationary phases with temperature, both revealed that heating and/or diluting changed the viscosities of phases with π-electron-containing, groups much more than for polydimethylsiloxanes. Rayleigh instability is therefore more important during coating of phenyl-containing phases such as OV-17, and later during column operation. The efficiencies of capillary columns of different diameters coated with a number of phases under different conditions of temperature and coating rate, and then operated at different temperatures were in good agreement with the predictions of the theory.

Notes: Instrumentation was assembled that allows the use of supercritical ammonia as mobile phase in capillary supercritical fluid chromatography. Several modifications of the typical chromatographic system were necessary, especially with respect to injection and detection. In addition, the stabilities of various polysiloxane stationary phases were studied. The chromatography of polarizable and polar basic materials was demonstrated using a nonpolar polysiloxane stationary phase.

Notes: Static coating of phenyl and biphenyl polysiloxane stationary phases on 50 μm i.d. open tubular capillaries was studied. The influence of coating solvents and coating temperatures on the viscosities and surface tensions of the polymer stationary phases and their coating solutions was determined. A measure of the Rayleigh instability paralled the observed coating efficiencies.
