    Description: A decentralized procedure is presented for the design of controllers for flexible structures. Spatially significant components are created which approximate the response of a specific part of the complete structure. For each component, the controller and observer gain matrices which are used in a controller for the complete structure. The proposed method is illustrated on a model of NASA Langley's CSI testbed structure.

    Description: Krylov vectors and the concept of parameter matching are combined here to develop model-reduction algorithms for structural dynamics systems. The method is derived for a structural dynamics system described by a second-order matrix differential equation. The reduced models are shown to have a promising application in the control of flexible structures. It can eliminate control and observation spillovers while requiring only the dynamic spillover terms to be considered. A model-order reduction example and a flexible structure control example are provided to show the efficacy of the method.

    Description: The stability and robustness of the controlled system obtained via the substructure control synthesis (SCS) method of Su et al. (1990) were examined using a six-bay truss model, and employing an LQG control design method to obtain controllers for two separate structures. It is found that the assembled controller provides a stability in this instance. A qualitative assessment of the stability robustness of the system with controller designed with the SCS method is provided by obtaining a controller using the complete truss model and comparing the robustness of the corresponding closed-loop systems.

    Description: An observer-based structural control design method is proposed in this paper. The method is a semi-inverse design procedure in that the control law is not designed before the observer system, but is a result that comes from the observer design. However, the observer design is not completely independent of the control design either, but seeks to yield a control law that is close to a prescribed control law. First, the observer design problem is considered as the reconstruction of a linear function of the state vector. The linear state function to be reconstructed is the given control law. Then, based on the derivation for linear state function observers, the observer design is formulated as a parameter optimization problem. The optimization objective is to generate a matrix that is close to the optimal feedback gain matrix. Based on that matrix, the form of the observer and a new control law can be determined. The semi-inverse design procedure can yield a reduced-order observer with dimension considerably smaller than that of the system. Two examples are used to demonstrate the proposed design procedure.

    Description: An approach to the design of low-order controllers for large scale systems is proposed. The method is derived from the theory of linear state function observers. First, the realization of a state feedback control law is interpreted as the observation of a linear function of the state vector. The linear state function to be reconstructed is the given control law. Then, based on the derivation for linear state function observers, the observer design is formulated as a parameter optimization problem. The optimization objective is to generate a matrix that is close to the given feedback gain matrix. Based on that matrix, the form of the observer and a new control law can be determined. A four-disk system and a lightly damped beam are presented as examples to demonstrate the applicability and efficacy of the proposed method.

    Description: A model order reduction algorithm based on a Krylov recurrence formulation is developed to reduce order of controllers. The reduced-order controller is obtained by projecting the full-order LQG controller onto a Krylov subspace in which either the controllability or the observability grammian is equal to the identity matrix. The reduced-order controller preserves the impulse response energy of the full-order controller and has a parameter-matching property. Two numerical examples drawn from other controller reduction literature are used to illustrate the efficacy of the proposed reduction algorithm.

    Description: A decentralized design procedure is proposed for the control design for flexible structures. The structure to be controlled is decomposed into several substructures by using a natural decomposition called substructuring decomposition. For each substructure, a subcontroller is designed by using the linear quadratic optimal control theory. Then, a controller synthesis scheme called Substructural Controller Synthesis (SCS) is used to assemble the subcontrollers into a system controller, which is to be used to control the whole structure. A plane truss example is used to illustrate the efficacy of the proposed method.

    Description: Krylov vectors and the concept of parameter-matching are combined to develop a model reduction algorithm for a damped structural dynamics system. The reduced-order model obtained matches a certain number of low-frequency moments of the full-order system. The major application of the present method is to the control of flexible structures. It is shown that, in the control of flexible structures, there generally exist three types of control energy spillover, namely, the control spillover, the observation spillover, and dynamic spillover. The formulation based on Krylov subspaces can eliminate the control and the observation spillover, while leaving only the dynamic spillover to be considered. Two examples are used to illustrate the efficacy of the Krylov method.
