Description: Within NASA's recent thrust for industrial collaboration, JPL (Jet Propulsion Laboratory) has recently established two technology cooperation agreements in the robotics area: one on virtual reality (VR) calibration with Deneb Robotics, Inc., and the other on redundant manipulator control with Robotics Research Corporation (RRC). These technology transfer cooperation tasks will enable both Deneb and RRC to commercialize enhanced versions of their products that will greatly benefit both space and terrestrial telerobotic applications.

Description: A software pilot model for Space Shuttle proximity operations is developed, utilizing fuzzy logic. The model is designed to emulate a human pilot during the terminal phase of a Space Shuttle approach to the Space Station. The model uses the same sensory information available to a human pilot and is based upon existing piloting rules and techniques determined from analysis of human pilot performance. Such a model is needed to generate numerous rendezvous simulations to various Space Station assembly stages for analysis of current NASA procedures and plume impingement loads on the Space Station. The advantages of a fuzzy logic pilot model are demonstrated by comparing its performance with NASA's man-in-the-loop simulations and with a similar model based upon traditional Boolean logic. The fuzzy model is shown to respond well from a number of initial conditions, with results typical of an average human. In addition, the ability to model different individual piloting techniques and new piloting rules is demonstrated.

Description: The Sub-scale Beryllium Mirror Demonstrator that was successfully tested to demonstrate cryogenic figuring of a bare mirror has been coated with a protected gold reflective surface and retested at cryogenic temperatures. Results showing less than 9 nm rms surface distortion attributable to the added coating are presented.

Description: Overall program completeness is optimized by selecting the ordered set of observations and targets that maximizes the efficiency for the ensemble of stars. We describe the optimization approach and report on completeness sensitivity to instrument throughput, inner working angle, instrument sensitivity, observational overhead, exo-zodiacal brightness, and target revisit constraints.

Description: The Terrestrial Planet Finder Coronagraph (TPF-C) is a NASA pre-phase. A orbiting telescope with the goal of detecting and characterizing visible and near-IR light refelected from terrestrial planets. We use observational completeness, defined as the fraction of potentially observable planets that are detected, to determine how well the proposed telescope meets the mission goals. Single visit completeness is optimized by slecting the length of observation per target that maximizes the completeness for the ensemble of stars. In this memo we describe the integration time calculations and two approaches to single visit optimization.
