    Notes: Abstract  Sunflower genotypes with increased levels of palmitic acid (C16 : 0) in the seed oil could be useful for food and industrial applications. The objective of the present study was to determine the inheritance of the high C16 : 0 content in the sunflower mutant line CAS-5 (〉25% of the total oil fatty acids). This mutant was reciprocally crossed with the lines HA-89 (5.7% C16 : 0) and BSD-2-691 (5.4% C16 : 0), the latter being the parental line from which CAS-5 was isolated. No maternal effect for the C16 : 0 content was observed from the analysis of F1 seeds in any of the crosses. The inheritance study of the C16 : 0 content in F1, F2 and BC1F1 seeds from the crosses of CAS-5 with its parental line BSD-2-691 indicated that the segregation fitted a model of two alleles at one locus with partial dominance for the low content. The analysis of the fatty acid composition in the F2 populations from the crosses with HA-89 revealed a segregation fitting a ratio 19 : 38 : 7 for low (〈7.5%), middle (7.5–15%), and high (〉25%) C16 : 0 content, respectively. This segregation was explained on the basis of three loci (P1, P2, P3) each having two alleles showing partial dominance for low content. The genotypes with a high C16 : 0 content were homozygous for the recessive allele p1 and for at least one of the other two recessive alleles, p2 or p3. This model was further confirmed with the analysis of the F3 and the BC1F1 generations. It was concluded that both the recessive alleles p2 and p3 were already present in the BSD-2-691 line, the allele p1 being the result of a mutation from P1. This genetic study will facilitate breeding strategies associated with the incorporation of the high C16 : 0 trait into agronomically acceptable sunflower hybrids.

    Notes: Abstract  Two sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) mutants with high concentrations of saturated fatty acids in their seed oil have been identified and studied extensively. The mutant line CAS-5 has high concentrations of palmitic acid (C16:0) (〉25% compared with 7% in standard sunflower seed oil) and low-C18:0 values (3%). CAS-3 is characterized by its high levels of stearic acid (C18:0) (〉22% compared with 4% in standard sunflower seed oil) and a low-C16:0 content (5%). CAS-5 also possesses elevated levels of palmitoleic acid (C16:1) (〉5%), which is absent in standard sunflower seed oil. The objective of this study was to determine the relationships between the loci controlling the high-C16:0 and the high-C18:0 traits in these mutants. Plants of both mutants were reciprocally crossed. Gas chromatographic analyses of fatty acids from the seed oil of F1, F2, F3 and the BC1F1 to CAS-5 generations indicated that the loci controlling the high-C16:0 trait exerted an epistatic effect over the loci responsible for the high-C18:0 character. As a result, the phenotypic combination containing both the high-C16:0 levels of CAS-5 and the high-C18:0 levels of CAS-3 was not possible. However, phenotypes with a saturated fatty acid content of 44% (34.5% C16:0+9.5% C18:0) were identified in the F3 generation. These are the highest saturated (C16:0 and C18:0) levels reported so far in sunflower seed oil. When F3 C16:0 segregating generations in both a high- and a low-C18:0 background were compared, the high-C16:1 levels were not expressed as expected in the high-C18:0 background (CAS-3 background). In this case, the C16:1 content decreased to values below 1.5%, compared with 〉5% in a low-C18:0 background. As the stearoyl-ACP desaturase has been reported to catalyze the desaturation from C16:0-ACP to C16:1-ACP, these results suggested that a decrease in its activity was involved in the accumulation of C18:0 in the high-C18:0 mutant CAS-3.

    Notes: Summary Sunflower lines breeding true for very high oleic acid content in their oil (average levels higher than 85%) were crossed with standard sunflower lines with mean oleic acid levels of 30%. Analysis of the oil of F1 seeds indicated dominance for high oleic levels and control of the genotype of the embryo. Segregating generations were obtained selfing heterozygous high oleic BCnF1 plants from several generations of a backcrossing program to incorporate the high oleic character to standard inbred lines and testcrossing these plants to low oleic material. Analysis of F2 and testcrossed seeds showed three kind of segregations, in both F2 and testcrossed populations, with different proportions of low, intermediate and high oleic types. Genetic analysis of these data supported the hypothesis, that the high oleic character is controlled by three dominant complementary genes OL1, OL2 and OL3. Additional data showing F1 seeds with intermediate oleic content and segregations for high oleic in progenies of intermediate types, suggest the presence of major factors modifying high oleic acid content.

    Notes: Abstract A new sunflower mutant, CAS-12, was obtained, which has both high palmitic (≈30%) and high oleic acid contents, and also a substantial amount of palmitoleic acid (≈7%). The mutant was selected after X-ray irradiation of dry seeds of the inbred line BSD-2-423, which had normal palmitic (≈3%) and high oleic (≈88%) acid levels. The increase of palmitic and palmitoleic acids occurred at the expense of the oleic acid content, which decreased to around 55% in respect to the original line. Linoleic acid content is always under 5%. Palmitic and palmitoleic acid levels were similar to those of the high palmitic mutant CAS-5 obtained in a previous programme from a low oleic line isogenic to BSD-2-423 using a similar mutagenic treatment. In that previous programme we also selected three high stearic acid mutants using chemical mutagenic treatment on the same sunflower line (RDF-1-532). We attempted to obtain mutants in other lines but were unsuccessful. The isolation of similar mutants in isogenic parental lines illustrates the importance of the genetic background in the development of specific mutants with an altered seed oil fatty acid composition. The oil of this mutant will increase the range of potential uses of sunflower oil.

    Description: Se determinó la biomasa del camarón rosado Farfantepenaeus notialis presente en el golfo de Ana María durante el periodo 1997-2010 mediante análisis estadístico de captura por edades (SCA). Esta se incrementó a partir del año 2008 como respuesta al aumento del reclutamiento, cuyo promedio anual presenta sus mayores valores durante el segundo semestre del año. La entrada de reclutas (pre-adultos) al área de pesca ocurre por dos zonas principales, frente a los cayos de Ana María, y en Sta. Cruz Abajo, al norte de la porción sur de los cayos de las Doce Leguas. Una pesquería a finales del año puede provocar una sobrepesca del crecimiento y afectar la biomasa disponible para el siguiente año.
    Description: It was determined the biomass of pink shrimp Farfantepenaeus notialis present in the Gulf of Ana Maria during the period 1997-2010, by means of statistical analysis of catch per ages (SCA). The biomass increased from 2008 as a response to the increment in the recruitment, which showed its highest average annual values during the second semester of that year. The input of recruits (pre-adults) to the fishing area occurs by two main zones, in front of Ana Maria keys and in Santa Cruz Abajo, North of the southern portion of Doce Leguas keys. Fishing at the end of the year may cause an overfishing of the growth, thus affecting the available biomass for the following year.

    Description: Con el propósito de conocer el nivel de biomasa del camarón rosado (Farfantepenaeus notialis) y la variación espacio temporal de la población en la zona de pesca de la Empresa Pesquera de Granma, se analizó la información de los cruceros de prospección mensuales realizados durante los años 2009, 2010 y enero del 2011. La composición por talla muestra medias de 8.7 y 8.5 cm (largo cubano) con tallas máximas de 14.7 y 15.2 cm. En el golfo de Guacanayabo el desove de la especie ocurre durante los meses de marzo a julio. El reclutamiento muestra dos etapas, la primera en enero-febrero y la segunda en agostoseptiembre pudiendo ocurrir adelanto en los meses como se apreció en julio del año 2009. El reclutamiento se manifiesta en la zona oriental del golfo de Guacanayabo desde la Boca del Cauto hasta la ensenada de Gua, incluyendo los cayos de Manzanillo, pudiendo desplazarse al W de la ensenada de Gua. El golfo de Guacanayabo muestra una biomasa del orden de 600 t y los máximos de biomasa durante 2009, 2010 y 2011 se presentan en la Zona III en febrero, abril y enero respectivamente. La biomasa disminuye en la medida en que actúa fundamentalmente la mortalidad natural.
    Description: Aimed to know the biomass level of pink shrimp (Farfantepenaeus notialis) and the space-time variation of the population in the fishing area of EPIGRAN enterprise, the information of monthly research cruises was analyzed during years 2009, 2010 and 2011 (January). Size composition shows a mean size of 8.7 and 8.5 cm (Cuban length) with maximum sizes of 14.7 and 15.2 in 2009 and 2010 respectively. Taking into account the maxima values of gonadal maturation for areas, the Guacanayabo gulf shows that spawning takes place during the months of March to July. The recruitment confirm two stages during the year, the first one during January-February and the second during August-September, being noted that a recruitment advance may occur as observed in July, 2009. During the studied years, recruitment is mainly observed in the eastern area of Guacanayabo gulf, from the Boca del Cauto until Gua bay, including the Manzanillo keys, and may move to the west of Gua bay. Gulf of Guacanayabo shows a biomass in the order of 600 t, with maxima values during 2009, 2010 and 2011 occurring in the Zone III in February, April and January respectively. A biomass decrease is observed later due mainly as natural mortality takes place.
