    Notes: Abstract The structure and thermal behavior of long-chain cycloalkanes (CH2)n with n= 48, 72, 96, 144 and 288 have been investigated by electron diffraction, WAXS and SAXS analysis. Five different modifications have been characterized by their subcells as a function of ring size, crystallization conditions and temperature. The rings adopt, in all modifications, a conformation with two straight stems connected by folds. Similarity with the polyethylene lattice is achieved only for n≥144. In this case, the stems are perpendicular to the layer surface and pack in the well-known orthorhombic subcell regardless of whether the rings are crystallized from solution or melt. (CH2)96 forms the same type of subcell when crystallized from the melt, but the stems are oblique to the layer surface. Rings of all sizes undergo a transition into a phase in which the stems are arranged similarly as in the “rotator phase” of linear paraffins. (CH2)72 and (CH2)96 exhibit additional transitions at lower temperatures. One significant feature of some transitions is the change of conformation and length of the folds.

    Notes: Summary High-productivity continuous fermentation processes have been developed for the production of important industrial microorganisms in specially designed fermentors.Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Pichia pastoris, Kluyveromyces fragilis, andCandida utilis yeasts have been grown in bench-scale fermentors at cell densities of over 120 g/l, whileEscherichia coli, Bacillus megaterium, Methylomonas sp. andPseudomonas putida bacteria have been cultivated to cell densities of more than 110 g/l. Productivities (g cells per 1 per h) greater than 25 have been achieved in both bench-scale and 1500-liter fermentors with yeasts, and values as high as 55 have been achieved with bacteria in the bench-scale fermentor. The microorganisms were grown on defined media using ammonia for pH control and as nitrogen source. The fermentor, capable of high oxygen and heat transfer rates, was operated at constant volume with continuous feed and product discharge. The high-productivity process reduces fermentor size, media sterilization requirements, and may under some circumstances eliminate waste and recycle streams. It can also be applied to a variety of biological products.

    Description: The wide angle Rosat pointed survey (WARPS) of clusters is based on the Rosat position sensitive proportional counter (PSPC) archive of pointed observations. It includes extended X-ray sources and point-like X-ray sources with non-stellar optical counterparts. It was designed to minimize the selection effects while covering a large area of the sky. The purposes of the survey were to measure the low luminosity, high redshift, X-ray luminosity function of clusters and groups and to investigate cluster morphologies and unusual systems.
