    Notes: Abstract Cytochalasin B (CB) inhibits the elongation growth of maize roots, and that of wheat coleoptile segments incubated in indolyl-3-acetic acid, by over 30% after a lag period of about 60 min. This long lag is not due to poor tissue penetration by the inhibitor, but seems to reflect a property of the process inhibited by CB. The only visible ultrastructural change accompanying growth inhibition is the accumulation of secretory vesicles in the vicinity of dictyosomes, which occurs between 90 and 300 min. However, a massive accumulation of vesicles is seen after 120 min in root cap cells which possess very active dictyosomes. The results indicate that CB does not inhibit elongation growth by interfering with cytoplasmic streaming. Instead, they indicate that the drug acts to inhibit the secretion of cell wall components at some stage after vesicle production, but prior to their transport.

    Notes: Abstract In this paper, necessary optimality conditions for nonlinear programs in Banach spaces and constraint qualifications for their applicability are considered. A new optimality condition is introduced, and a constraint qualification ensuring the validity of this condition is given. When the domain space is a reflexive space, it is shown that the qualification is the weakest possible. If a certain convexity assumption is made, then this optimality condition is shown to reduce to the well-known extension of the Kuhn-Tucker conditions to Banach spaces. In this case, the constraint qualification is weaker than those previously given.

Specifically, we compare the complementary programs of Avriel and Williams (Ref. 1) with the reversed programs and the harmonic programs of Duffin and Peterson (Refs. 2, 3). These methods are used to generate a sequence of posynomial geometric programs which are solved using a dual algorithm.

    Notes: Abstract Rooting responses and ethylene production by hypocotyl cuttings from etiolated mung-bean seedlings treated with the auxins α-naphthaleneacetic acid, γ-(indole-3)-n-butyric acid (IBA) and 2,4,5-trichloro-phenoxypropionic acid were determined. There was no relationship between the abilities of the auxins to induce root formation and their capacities for inducing ethylene production. Studies with mixtures of 3-indoleacetic acid, a poor stimulator of rooting but an effective inducer of ethylene production, and IBA, an effective rooting stimulator but a poor inducer of ethylene production, exposure of cuttings to ethylene or (2-chloroethyl) phosphonic acid (Ethephon), hypobaric storage (150 mb) of treated cuttings, and exposure of auxin-treated cuttings to 7% CO2 also indicated that ethylene is not directly involved in initiation of adventitious roots in this plant material.

    Notes: Abstract Dark-grown radish seedlings (Raphanus sativus L.) were sprayed with 10-3 mol·l-1 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid and then were exposed to a 14:10 light: dark cycle. Cotyledon samples from these seedlings and unsprayed controls were taken for electron microscopy, chlorophyll determinations, and photosynthetic rate measurements at regular intervals for 72 h. A normal development of etioplasts to chloroplasts with formation of typical grana-fret work system was observed in the control cotyledons. The chloroplasts in the 2,4-D-treated cotyledons showed changes in the organization of the grana thylakoids; these thylakoids being more appressed to each other than in the controls. The chlorophyll content of treated plants was less than that of controls but the rate of chlorophyll biosynthesis was unaffected. The photosynthetic rate/mg chlorophyll was considerably higher for treated plants suggesting that 2,4-D treatment resulted in decreased size of the photosynthetic unit.

    Notes: Abstract Elongation of the shoots of three aquatic plants (Hydrocharis morsus-ranae, Regnellidium diphyllum and Ranunculus sceleratus) is stimulated by treatment with ethylene or IAA. The effects of the two hormones are additive, and experiments with an ethylene biosynthesis inhibitor and silver ions indicate that the mechanisms by which ethylene and IAA stimulate growth may be different. Hydrocharis and Ranunculus leaf discs synthesize [14C]ethylene from [14C]methionine, but no [14C]ethylene is formed by Regnellidium, suggesting the existence of an alternative pathway of ethylene biosynthesis in the fern.

    Notes: Abstract When sufficient 2,4-D to maintain apical dominance for at least 21d was applied to the cut stem interface of sunflower seedlings which had been decapitated in the epicotyl, it could not be detected in the vicinity of the inhibited axillary buds 7d after application. Rather the 2,4-D concentrated at the stump apex where it was associated with formation of meristematic tissue. The results indicate an indirect role for 2,4-D in the maintenance of apical dominance in this system, possibly involving the induced meristematic activity.

    Notes: Abstract Ethylene and auxin both enhance cell elongation growth in the rachis of the frond of Regnellidium diphyllum. Measurements of the stress relaxation modulus of the walls of methanol-killed rachis segments show that both auxin and ethylene cause an increase in cell wall extensibility, that the effects are additive, and that they occur in the presence of hypertonic solutions of mannitol that preclude cell elongation. The results are taken as evidence for the operation of two separate mechanisms for cell wall loosening.

    Notes: Abstract Cell elongation in the rachis of the semiaquatic fern Regnellidium diphyllum is induced by the addition of ethylene or indoleacetic acid (IAA). Experiments with whole plants or rachis segments have shown that ethylene-induced growth requires the presence of auxin. Ethylene does not cause a modification in either endogenous auxin levels or in the extent of auxin metabolism but auxin transport is reduced. Rates of ethylene production in Regnellidium are not altered by either mechanical excitation or by the addition of auxin. A two-hormone control of cell expansion is proposed in which an initial, auxin-dependent growth event pre-conditions the cells to a further subsequent (or synchronous) ethylene-dependent growth event.

    Notes: Abstract In vitro studies of IAA-induced cell elongation in Triticum aestivum have demonstrated that lead causes a large reduction in elongation. Inhibition of elongation can be reduced by increasing the concentration of IAA, or by the addition of calcium. The inhibitory effect appears to be linked with changes in the properties of the cell walls. Experiments are described which show that lead becomes bound strongly to certain chemical substances involved in cell wall architecture.
