Description: Author(s): Pascal Naubereit, Tina Gottwald, Dominik Studer, and Klaus Wendt We present high-resolution data of the single-excitation spectrum of protactinium, reaching slightly beyond the first-ionization threshold. Within this work, more than 1500 energy levels are recorded in different excitation energy ranges below 50 000 cm − 1 . Our experimental results show that the tabula... [Phys. Rev. Description: Author(s): Pascal Naubereit, Dominik Studer, Anna V. Viatkina, Andreas Buchleitner, Barbara Dietz, Victor V. Flambaum, and Klaus Wendt Recently, spectroscopic investigations of the protactinium atom applying resonant laser ionization spectroscopy revealed high-resolution data of the single-excitation spectrum of protactinium, reaching slightly beyond the first ionization potential [P. Description: Author(s): D. Studer, L. Maske, P. Windpassinger, and K. Wendt We present a direct excitation of the presumably ultranarrow 1001 − nm ground-state transition in atomic dysprosium. By using resonance ionization spectroscopy with pulsed Ti:sapphire lasers at a hot cavity laser ion source, we were able to measure the isotopic shifts in the 1001 − nm line between all s... [Phys. Description: Space mission requirements for the 70's have established a 50,000-hour-lifetime challenge for the mechanisms designer. This challenge may be met by two approaches: (1) development of new materials for wear-prone elements, and (2) design innovation of new electromechanical devices that do not include mechanical wear-prone components. Present state-of-the-art materials require restricted operation regarding load, speed, and power for gears, bearings, and brush-slipring components. These restrictions are discussed, and methods of improvement are suggested. The design-innovations approach is discussed and is illustrated by the design of an experimental magnetically suspended motor.

Description: Advanced components are the fundamental building blocks of advanced systems and spacecraft. Non-contacting elements, including magnetic bearings, brushless and ironless armature motors, rotary transformers and encoders, are discussed. Most of the information presented in this paper has been generated from a continuing program of component development. The aim of this paper is to identify some of the important design features and provide a perspective on the state of development reached to date.

Description: Magnetic bearings have been successfully applied to motorized rotor systems in the multi-kilogram range, at speeds up to 1200 radians per second. These engineering models also indicated the need for continued development in specific areas to make them feasible for spacecraft applications. Significant power reductions have recently been attained. A unique magnetic circuit, combining permanent magnets with electromagnetic control, has a bidirectional forcing capability with improved current sensitivity. The multi-dimensional nature of contact-free rotor support is discussed. Stable continuous radial suspension is provided by a rotationally symmetric permanent magnet circuit. Two bearings, on a common shaft, counteract the normal instability perpendicular to the rotational axis. The axial direction is servoed to prevent contact. A new bearing technology and a new field of application for magnetics is foreseen.
