Beschreibung: Author(s): Nicolais L. Guevara, Yujun Wang, and B. D. Esry We calculate the three-body spectrum for identical bosons interacting via attractive 1/ r 2 potentials. We find an infinite number of three-body states even when the pair interactions are too weak to support any two-body states. These new states thus share this surprising scenario with the Efimov effe... [Phys. Rev. Lett. 108, 213202] Published Tue May 22, 2012

Notizen: Conclusions Flexural fatigue of uniaxially and biaxially stressed IPN/glass mat composites was investigated using four point bend (4PB) and concentrically loaded (CL) specimen geometries. Regions of nearly constant bending moment between the inner spans of a 4PB beam and within the inner annulus of a CL circular plate yield quasi-uniform uniaxial and biaxial stress, respectively, on the tensile faces. The specimen dimensions were optimized for both loading geometries to give: (1) reduced specimen deflection through maximizing the ratio of the induced tensile stresses to the applied load, (2) minimized contact stresses by maximizing the induced stress with respect to the unit contact load, and (3) a large material volume exposed to the maximum cyclic stress (i.e., statistical fracture initiation). A power model was used to analyze the fatigue data for the 4PB and CL specimens. Both IPN composite materials studied fatigued more rapidly under the more severe loading conditions imposed by the CL specimen geometry. Fractography revealed that debond fracture was the dominant damage process for both geometries. The initial debond cracks were uniformly distributed throughout the stressed regions, confirming the presence of nearly uniform tensile stress. Damage localization followed after further cycling and was characterized by a locally high debond fracture density, fiber fracture, and always occurred where several glass strands crossed near the specimen surface. Final specimen failure resulted from the preferential growth of dominant cracks through the specimen thickness.

Notizen: Abstract Metal Matrix Composites (MMC's) reinforced with continuous fibers were generally fabricated by a foil-sandwich technique or by liquid metal infiltration. Liquid metal infiltration may be used to cast final shapes in molds containing fiber preforms. It is also used to make composite wire from which may be fabricated panels and shapes by hot-press diffusion bonding or pultrusion. The major drawback of this method is that the molten matrix must wet the fiber for successful infiltration to occur, requiring special fiber surface treatments or matrix additives, and that, molten metals generally dissolve or degrade the fibers, necessitating a barrier coating on the fibers. All these problems can be solved using carbon fibers coated with metallic layers, e.g. nickel. This work analyses an easy method to produce modified carbon fibers by electroplating and the process of its recristallization. The topography of the growth front of the deposit has been studied. At temperatures higher than about 300° C an annealing under vacuum is required, because of the high reactivity of metal coating, nevertheless the heat treatment of metal deposit produces always an embrittled material.

Notizen: The effects of thermal treatment, residual solvent, and preswelling on the thermal properties and swelling behavior of solution cast polyblend films of poly(2,6-dimethyl,1,4-phenylene oxide) (PPO) and polystyrene (PS) were determined. Repeated cycling in the DSC analysis of the “as cast” films suggested that the original films contained residual casting solvent and that solvent-induced crystallization occurred in the PPO-rich compositions. Crystallinity was, apparently, eliminated by the first heating cycle in the differential scanning calorimeter. Sorption kinetics and apparent equilibria, characterizing the penetration of these films by n-hexane from the vapor phase, indicated that both the sorption rate and apparent equilibria are significantly affected by the prior history of the film samples. The sorption results presented here are quantitatively consistent with earlier studies of the PPO-PS system. The increased rate and amount of sorption observed in preswollen samples, and the reduced rate and amount of sorption observed in annealed samples are consistent with recent descriptions of sorption behavior in diverse glassy homopolymer systems.

Notizen: A history dependent solubility model is generalized in accordance with the Dual Mode Sorption Theory to take into account a history dependency of effective water diffusion coefficients in epoxy resins, based on hypothesized microcavitational damage due to the combined effects of temperature and sorbed moisture. Sorption data presented in a different paper are analyzed in the light of a transport model in which part of diffusing molecules are completely immobilized in the formed microcavities. The nature of the hypothesized damaging process is in agreement with the diffusion coefficient depressions and solubility increases experimentally found and theoretically predicted by the model.

Notizen: Recovery experiments above Tg have been performed on glass bead and short glass fiber polystyrene composite sheets obtained from extrusion and subsequent hot drawing. A shift procedure has been applied to recoil data using the Williams-Landel-Ferry (WLF) equation with the same values of C1 and C2 used for unfilled polystyrene. The data reported show that an improvement of the dimensional stability of a drawn thermoplastic material can be obtained by adding very low volume percentage of fibers. Moreover, all the recoil data have been reduced to a unique generalized master curve which takes into account the draw ratio, the filler content, and geometry, using a fractional distance from equilibrium as a measure of the recovery. These results indicate that the presence of the filler does not affect the recoil kinetics of the polymeric matrix.

Notizen: The rheological and thermal properties of composites of polystyrene (PS) and two liquid crystalline low-molecular-weight additives have been studied. Both additives act as plasticizers as evidenced by decreases in the glass transition and the melt viscosity. In addition both are miscible with PS over a broad range of concentrations. Partial phase diagrams of the two systems are presented and discussed.

Notizen: In this paper the effect of temperature and filler content φ on electrical resistivity of styrene-acrylonitrile polymer filled with iron or aluminium powders has been investigated. The resistivity of such composites decreases suddenly by several orders of magnitude at a critical volume concentration φc, which depends on the size distribution of particles and on thermal history. For filler content lower than φc, the resistivity decreases with increasing temperature, whereas for φ 〉 φc there is a sudden increase in resistivity at temperatures near the glass transition temperature of the polymeric matrix. This effect is more pronounced than the previously reported data on other composite systems.

Notizen: Internal cracking and microvoids are shown to form during room temperature storage of polycarbonate samples that have previously been exposed to boiling water. These microcracks or microvoids are actually disc-shaped pockets filled with water. This formation occurs due to the creation of water super-saturation conditions by cooling water-saturated specimens from 100°C to room temperature. As a result, water phase-separation, clustering, and microvoiding result and lead to deterioration of the mechanical properties. Visual healing of the microcracks is also sometimes observed at room temperature, especially under a dry atmosphere. Water from the water-filled pockets diffuses through the polycarbonate matrix to the external dry environment; the very thin emptied pockets then close and visually heal. This paper provides experimental data for the microvoiding process and clarifies the special mechanism of cracking/healing in polycarbonate samples.
